Nepal is quite the hotspot for beauty pageants. Just when you thought you had heard and seen it all… here comes Mr Handsome Nepal. The men’s pageant is also Nepal’s first for gay men. 24 year old Biswo Raj Adhikari bagged the coveted title of Mr Handsome Nepal 2013 on Saturday November 2 in Kathmandu. Adhikari who hails from Makwanpur is currently a student of sociology. The first runner up of Mr Handsome Nepal was Anup Shrestha of Chitwan and Rahul Shrestha became Mr Handsome Nepal 2nd Runner-up. Several key personalities including director Bhusan Dahal and former Miss Nepal Malvika Subba made it to the event in Kathmandu’s Rastriya Naachghar.
Speaking with Republica newspaper, director Bhusan Dahal shared that the event is a striking sign of how far attitudes have changed, and the confidence of the gay participants has been increasing in recent days. Malvika Subba shared two updates via her Facebook page to over 275,000 people saying “Judging Gay Mens pageant , a first in South Asia happening in Nach Ghar, Ktm Nepal at the moment. Mr Handsome Nepal 2013. Full support for gay rights and movement”.
Biswo’s final answer: “Every gay and lesbian should have equal right to education. They should not be isolated or discriminated for their natural identity because being gay or lesbian is not a disease but a feeling.”
Just when I thought they had exhausted out all possible titles and beauty pageants, it surprised me to learn about Mr Handsome Nepal. Since the pageant is for gay men, I believe calling it Mr Gay Nepal would’ve been better. People have their Miss SLC, Mr Rajdhani, Miss Chitwan, Miss Air Hostess, Manhunt Nepal and plenty more, so I see no problem in a beauty pageant for Nepali gay men.
