Awaited Films of 2012

2012 is set to be an interesting year for Kollywood Nepali cinema. Unlike previous years when few better made movies were released from similar genres, this year the audience will get a chance to watch movies from diverse genres. Apart from the few movies made by new hopefuls of Nepali cinema most do not stretch beyond the typical run-off-the mill love story which we’ve seen a million times. But hey, we still have to applaud them for their effort in repackaging the same old story and making it visually appealing. This year, Yep there will still be the love stories but there are movies that will deeply portray the happenings in our society. Be it the political movements or the confused identities of today’s youth thanks to the rapidly globalising world and our traditional Nepali background. Stories that have occurred at right home where your relatives fly abroad in search for better future will come to life on the big screen in 2012. Not to forget the typical love story but this time between two women.

What I’ve mentioned is only a glimpse of what’s coming in 2012. Agreed majority of the movies will still have mainstream actors made by producers that are not looking to bring new life into their projects but are searching for the financially viable product. These movies may be the bigger HIT in the cinemas with the core that’s why on our quest to better Nepali cinema we also should not forget what the mass still prefer to watch. Below are the Five on Lex List.

SAAYAD

Saayad is expected to release in the first half of 2012. The movie focuses largely on the issues that the current college youth of Kathmandu are dealing with. From confused identities, drugs, love and sex, Saayad explores all this and the watch is made more enjoyable with power packed performances by the young actors including Samyam Puri and Wilson Bikram Rai. The film which will be the second release after Bato Muniko Phool for director Suraj Subba Nalbo also stars Jharana Thapa. I was lucky to see the movie, to read my review on Saayad click here! GOODBYE KATHMANDU

Goodbye Kathmandu is a movie that hold’s great expectation as it’s directed by Nabin Subba. Not only that but the synopsis of the film sounds interesting. It’s about three youngsters who come from different backgrounds. But these three don’t meet each other in the film. Their individual stories provide the narration of what they witnessed and went through during the recent political turmoil in Nepal. These three will raise different social, cultural and psychological issues that many of us are still facing to this day. Goodbye Kathmandu also stars Malvika Subba, Sahana Bajracharya and Subarna Thapa (director of Snow Flowers) etc. For More about GBK = Link 1, Link 2, Link 3. Miss U is a simple movie about three friends Sanjh, Sakshyam and Jasmine studying abroad. The movie marks the return of Namrata Shrestha after two years, also stars Dilip Rayamajhi and introduces Varun Sjb Rana. Filming took place in Malaysia. For the trailer of Miss U, click here.
