She was once dubbed the “worst Miss Nepal” by many for her unrefined appearance and what looked like a weighty body but here is Miss Nepal 2011 Malina Joshi during her recent trek to Langtang National Park looking every bit the beauty queen. Malina was there to see the widely-visited Gosaikunda Lake. For mountaineers and conservationists the lake is a site of immense biodiversity whilst for many Hindu’s it is also regarded as a religious site of worship. Carrying her duty as a Goodwill Ambassador for WWF, Malina’s trek to the region took place between the 15TH-19TH March.

The purpose of the trek was to alert the surrounding communities regarding the negative impact of climate change, the urgent necessity to conserve endangered animals such as the red panda and to protect the vulnerable wetlands from waste and garbage that is often left behind by trekkers and pilgrims during Janai Purnima festival. Breaking down her journey, the Miss Nepal explains how friends thought she would not be able to tolerate the long hours of walk (8-9 hours per day). Just like how she’s proving to many that she is indeed the beauty queen, she also managed to take the trek in stride as the only arduous part of the trek she felt was climbing the steep hill from Lauribinayak to Buddha Mandir.

Malina shares that until and unless you’ve been in the mountains you really cannot explain the feeling you receive from within. That feeling that you are part of something so pure, surrounded by such landscape that our existence is threatening each hour, each day.
