The first ever Councillor Cup will be taking place on Saturday, 23rd November from 9AM onwards. The sporting event has been organized in memory of the late councillor Gam Gurung, a former Gurkha soldier and a councillor for Colliers Wood. The event by Morden football club has been supported by Merton Council and Tooting & Mitcham Football club.
53 year old Gurung who lost his battle to cancer earlier this year was a much loved member of the community who actively supported several organisations and campaigns including the rights of the Gurkhas. In 2007, he also founded the South London Nepalese Gurkha Association. Mr Gurung was also a teacher and a governor at Carshalton College.
The organizers of the event invite players from all backgrounds stating “It has always been a dream of our dear Mr Gurung to organize an event like this and bring the youths together from not only our Nepalese Society but also from other backgrounds.” Entry fee for the tournament is £180 and the last date of entry is on the 18th of November. There is a strict rule of no metal studs on the pitch and for more information you can contact Deependra or Sanjiv on the numbers given on the poster above.
Wishing the MORDEN FC Team all the best for the upcoming event and also for taking the step in organizing this event for all. It is indeed a wonderful action.
