A 30-year old American tourist was raped in the northern Indian tourist town of Manali. The 30-year old informed police that she was gang-raped and robbed on early Tuesday morning after accepting an offer from a truck driver to take her back to her guest house. Three Nepalese men have been arrested in connection with the rape case. The three men, Arjun, Lakki and Som Bahadur Tamang are all in their 20’s. The men are currently being questioned by police in Kullu over their alleged involvement in the rape case.
Since the Delhi gang-rape case in India, the country has seen a dip in tourist arrivals. A survey by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India found that travel agencies lost around 25% of foreign tourist business in the first three months of this year compared with the same period in 2012.
Nowadays one should always be cautious when travelling alone and of course, not get lifts from random strangers ESPECIALLY when travelling alone. The feeling of liberation that comes attached with travelling independently is wonderful but please please sit down and plan wisely. This is not just a reference to India but South Asia and various other parts of the world where it can be much riskier for women to travel alone. Unfortunately, such incidents take place all over the world… so be careful everyone. It’s never to late to carry some anti-rape spray
