The protest outside Qatar Embassy in London took place on Saturday 12th October between 12 midday to 2PM. The protest was organized to put pressure on the government of Qatar to provide good working conditions for migrant workers, pay wages regularly, stop mistreatment and respect each individuals rights. The organizers of the event, Rosan Sapkota, Ojesh Singh, Shreya Paudel and Astha Paudel also submitted a letter to the embassy highlighting the demands to be met. The team will also be sending a letter to the Embassy of Nepal in London to highlight the issue of fraudulent manpower agencies operating in Nepal and the need to regulate them.
Even though the plight of the Nepali migrant workers attracted thousands of interest on social media with instant shares of article links, videos and signings of petitions, the same could not be said for the protest on Saturday. Though a small group in number, the individuals consisted of personalities from all walks of life including Sophia Furber of Migrant Rights, Janine Booth of the Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, teachers and student activists. Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn has agreed to submit an early day motion outlining the disgraceful situation for migrant workers in Qatar and demanding action about it.
