Exploring LGBTI Stories With SAJHA SAWAL

SAJHA SAWAL’s latest episode features members of the LGBTI community, various supporters and individuals who have been invited to answer critical questions about the treatment and rights of LGBTI individuals. In writing and often in speech, we tend to speak as if LGBTI is one thing but it is very important to recognize that LGBTI actually means, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex; so that is five separate sexual orientation within the LGBTI umbrella. Of course there are more, from Queer, Asexual, Pansexual (and plenty more).

The Sajha Sawal episode has over a few dozen brave individuals who are comfortable enough to appear on national television and talk about their orientation and communicate to everyone at home that they are not so different. They may love a person from the same sex or wish to identify as a sex other than their biological one but ultimately, all they want is to be able to love another human being.

As mentioned by Pinky in the video and Malvika Subba, the LGBTI movement and community have indeed come a long way yet there are many more hurdles and the journey is still long ahead. A lot of young people and those who easily read English are becoming more aware of the different sexual orientation and see examples of public figures such as Ellen Degeneres, Neil Patrick Harris and it’s so important that a Nepali-speaking platform such as Sajha Sawal which reaches millions across the country and outside explored the stories of LGBTI community. Hopefully, there will be many more who learn something new and possibly some may even realise that this is their own story too…

PS. They did a great job by inviting the police officer to be part of the show.
