Himalaya Airlines has reconnected Kathmandu with Colombo after a twenty-eight years long gap! The airline marked its first flight to the Sri Lankan capital on the 1st of October. The flight route was previously served by Nepal Airline until the discontinuation after concerns over security in Sri Lanka. The new airline will be flying to the Sri Lankan capital Colombo two times a week from Kathmandu. Now I’ve always wanted to visit Sri Lanka! Have heard great stories about the country’s geography, people, beaches, animals and the religions there. The single fare to Colombo is currently priced at Nrs 29,191 with the return costing Nrs 50,041. Sri Lanka might be worth visiting this Dashain with the family… especially if you want to get away from Nepal.
Another great news and great move is that Himalaya Airlines is expected to announce direct flights between Kathmandu and Yangon very soon! This will be the first direct connection between Nepal and Myanmar and I am sure, one that will be welcomed by the large community of Burmese Nepali. According to AviationNepal, the connection may start as soon as December!
Great move by Himalaya Airlines! Let’s hope this new connection to Colombo and the proposed connection makes it convenient for people of both countries for travel and business. Hopefully our tourism stakeholders work more efficiently in attracting Sri Lankan and Burmese tourists and pilgrims to visit Nepal and Lumbini. Fingers crossed for the ongoing development of Bhairahawa airport; having that as a regional international airport will surely do wonders to bring in tourists to Lumbini and maybe it will also open up other pathways.
