What is Startup Weekend? :

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable.  On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical or design backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.

Jigme Sherpa and his team comprising Prabodh Siwakoty, Sovit Poudel, Mandeep Karn, and Bishwanath Parajuki targets a process which is considered by many a hassle simply because there is no end-to-end service provider. Docopoco’s comprehensive and customised solution to shifting homes and offices aims to provide businesses and individuals with an alternative to an unorganized sector where lack of proper packing and un-packing process, unreliable transportation mediums, extensive labour, and ultimately delivery of goods is a constant source of worry for consumers. A one- stop -solution to all shifting woes, the enterprising team of five proposed safety and convenience with a call or a visit to their website.

Jacob Wheeler and Jeremiah Trein signed for Startup Weekend to connect with local youth who have a passion for creative ways to grow the Nepali economy through job and idea creation. Their business idea targets the burgeoning market of events in Nepal. Addressing the oft-faced problem of expensive resource mobilization for designing, printing and distributing ticket on the part of event organizers and travel, and precious hours lost in waiting-time for ticket seekers, e-Tickets in Nepal proposes an online, SMS, and app services that will allow individuals to purchase tickets to an event of choice by using a phone.

  • Monil Adhikari
NepaliBytesMonil Adhikari says that his victory at the startup weekend almost two years ago helped him and his team to startup Nepali Bytes which caters to Nepali language and literature by posting them on their website. He states that his website is doing really well and the online presence is great compared to what it was two years ago. He has been volunteering with the Startup Weekends ever since and thinks that more of these events should be organized often.

Participant for Startup Weekend 2014

Shritesh Bhattarai

I first heard about Startup Weekend online and for someone who wants to be an entrepreneur, I think this is a great platform. I am excited and nervous to be a part of the upcoming Startup Weekend also because I am turning 19 on the same day.  And I would love turning older with a victory.

Mentor:

Sakar Pudasaini
Director, Karkhana

Sakar Pudasaini states, ‘I think that this kind of events is good for the society because what we are taught in schools and colleges in Nepal does not meet the expectations of a professional workplace. And events like Startup Weekend help instil the right kind of knowledge into people’s minds which helps them grow further in the professional scenario.

How to participate?
