A Gurkha Memorial – the chautara – was unveiled by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The memorial has been created in remembrance of the Gurkha soldiers killed while serving in the British Army. Next year also marks the 200 year anniversary of Gurkha service to Great Britain and such events are expected through the course of this and next year.
More than 200,000 Gurkhas are believed to have served in the first and second world war (National Army Museum).
