Kumar Kancha Passes Away

6
The line ‘Jindagiko Ke Bhara Cha Ra’ cannot be any true. Singer Kumar Kancha who had been bedridden in a Mumbai Hospital for a long time has passed away on Monday afternoon. A final heart attack is believed to have taken his life.
The money I have collected for Kumar Kancha currently stands at £667 GBP and I shall send that money across to Nepal as soon as possible. Lastly, prayers to Kumar Kanchas family and for his soul to rest in peace.
Thank You to all your support.

Dasdhunga Wins BEST CINEMA!

0
Manoj Pandit the director of Dasdhunga must be beaming of joy right now. The political movie has won MeroCinema.com’s Popular Award for the category BEST CINEMA with 35.30% of the votes. Aside from this Apil Bista who has produced this movie is currently in the UK in hope to screen it for the Nepalese diaspora here. Dasdhunga has already been screened in various cities in Europe and is expected to be screened in the US next month.
Clever move! Kudos to Apil Bista for taking such initiative to expand Nepali movies abroad.

Hamro Team – Nepali TV Show

3
Hamro Team is a new Nepali TV show made under Bhushan Dahal’s direction for Kantipur TV. The main protagonist is Reecha Sharma who has recently won the Best Debut Award from MeroCinema Popular award. This tv show carries a message along with it and will see more than 15 major characters from diverse backgrounds.
Plot: A young female football star forgoes an opportunity to move to the US through the diversity visa, choosing instead to coach an all-male football team. A young man returns with a degree from abroad to develop this team and make it successful. Young men from diverse backgrounds come together to play football and to realise their dreams.
“The plot is driven by a message that emphasises teamwork, but apart from that, it has everything else that popular TV shows have: tears, comedy, and romance,” says Reecha Sharma, who plays the lead as the female football coach Seema. “I definitely think it will make its mark in Nepali television.”

Abroad Calling: In Search of the British Dream

5
I watched a Nepali TV News report on YouTube regarding the influx of Nepali students seeking higher education in Britain. In front of the camera was an optimistic student who confidently stated he had no worries adapting to the life in the UK. He further added to his statement by suggesting how the development of London Olympics would guarantee him a job which would fund his education during his stay in one of the most expensive country in the world.
I was in awe. I felt annoyed at his blindness; however I cannot blame his lack of awareness. I partly blame the education consultancies in Nepal. They are clearly misguiding, misinforming and MIS-everything else to these students. Yes, British education is of high standard and the most recognised in the world. Nonetheless students from Nepal who have entered the UK since 2006/7 in student visa have been duped by these consultancies; our own Nepali brothers and sisters. The promise of a British dream, five-star education has been short-lived for thousands of students who have had to seek Plan-B after finding their educational institute being suspended. Education is the only first of their struggle.
Accommodation: The dreaded A. We’ve heard stories; I’ve witnessed it through my own friend. My friend was to be picked up by his agent in London Heathrow upon his arrival; however the agent never arrived. The accommodation had already been partly paid for in Nepal. Stories such as these are nothing new. We’ve heard worse, to such extent that Nepali students have been found accommodating themselves in public parks. As the Nepali mentality goes, we hear it, we say ‘Ke Garne’ and get on with our daily duties. NRN-UK in partnership with various Nepali media publications in the UK initiated a talk-program with such students to seek support for them.
Many students who arrive in the UK arrive with no intentions to return back to Nepal. They plan to overstay their visa and afterwards do the odd-jobs and seek a small time living whilst also providing for those back in Nepal. Now we all have our own personal circumstances. I am not here writing this to belittle those who have overstayed and are making a living illegally. What I will say is, those who do that have to go through twice as much trouble. With no legal status, job opportunities are automatically limited. They find themselves as a niche, so niche that they have to say YES to whatever amount they’re being paid. They’re just one out of the thousands at the moment. I ask my friend who now has been here in the UK for a year what his journey has been like, he explains to me his journey has not been a rollercoaster but a journey that has taught him love, respect and to maintain values. He describes to me how meeting with Nepalis, eating and watching Nepali movies is dearer to him now than ever imagined. I guess you only realise how great of a place Nepal really is when you actually leave Nepal. He is only one out of the thousands who agree with this statement and he is only one out of the thousands who left Nepal in desperation for an opportunity to better himself abroad. He is still yet to fully live his British dream but when he does Nepal will once again be crying for another lost countrymen.

Nepali Films in 2011

3
Batch No 16 – For more details of this action movie click here for its Facebook page.Unlike 2010 where we saw several love stories being released ie. First Love and Kohi Mero, it seems as if action and thriller is on the rise in 2011. However let me remind you, there will be tonnes of Nepali movies being released – much of the typical dhisum dhisum ones where Rekha Thapa is chased by gundas in the hills of Chobhar but this is just a very small compilation of movies that have been produced better in terms of technicality… regarding storyline we shall find out once it hits the theatres across Nepal.
Enjoy the Batch No 16 trailer – Must PLAY (Releasing Feb 25, 2011)

Letter – is a film by Samten Bhutia and this movie has Uttam Pradhan making a sort of come back to Nepali silverscreen. The trailer hits the spot perfectly, it leaves you wanting more – or atleast wanting to watch the movie. I was very impressed, even previous Nepali movies; those that have been made well have kinda failed to deliver in trailers but Letter similarly to Batch No 16 builds the pace up quickly yet leaving the audience wanting more. I likes! Hope you likes too.

Swor – has many familiar faces of the Nepali showbiz scene. Raj Ballav Koirala plays an integral part of this movie which is based on music. That is probably one of its good points. Hear the musical teaser out for Superstar, this movie is fresh, seems youthful and is ready to be watched on January 28th, 2011.

Aside from these three movies, there will be MERO LOVE STORY and KE YO MAYA HO by Sudarshan Thapa. Prachanda Shrestha should also be finishing writing his script for the much anticipated Purple Days which is starring Namrata Shrestha. Namrata will also be seen alongside Varun Sjb Rana in MISS U and she has started work on her next movie which is untitled at the moment. My very own Jharana Bajracharya will no longer be doing commercial movies.

Buddha Air Flies to Lucknow

0
Buddha Air has started operations in its second international destination to Lucknow from today. This is the second intl destination after Paro which was introduced in mid 2010. The airlines officials state that they will first begin with a 47 seater airliner, which will later be increased if the crowd starts to flow steadily. The marketing head of Buddha Air says, that they hope by the month of March this year, they should commence flights to Kolkata also. Previously, Cosmic Air had also flown to various Indian cities but ceased operations after financial difficulties. Lets hope Buddha Air does not suffer the same fate. All the best to them and their future routes including a proposed (Pokhara to New Delhi).
In similar aviation news, Lord Gautam Buddha International airport in Bhairawa had to stop night flights after an unidentified group broke 25 runway lights. Officials said each runway light exported from foreign countries costs around Rs. 100,000. The security in the airport needs to be upped, not only in Bhairawa but everywhere else. Theres hardly any adequate fencing and protection and why would the group do that. Come on people, this act is Nepalis destroying Nepali property.
Not cool.

The Believers!

2
Now we have seen many Nepalese event companies organising parties in the name of charities to bring in that extra few animals to entertain them on the dancefloor and help them smile their way to the banks but there are a group of professionals in Nepal brought together with one vision of a more aware and responsible future generation. Their objective is to motivate and mobilize youngsters of Nepal by working on social, environmental and educational issues of Nepal. Pictures do all the talking – check out their fundraising events so far.
Their third fundraising event PARTY GREEN DREAM 3 will take place on the 15th January at Club Platinum, the tickets priced at a reasonable Nrs 600.
Two of their aims from this party are
1. To add 10 more kids on their sponsorship program.
#Students: 5 students(Dang), 3 (Mustang) and 2 (Helambu)
#Duration of Sponsorship: 3 years minimum*
# Help: Books, tuition fees, exam fees, uniform, health checkups and lunch money.
2. The Believers has announced to adopt a villlage in Upper Mustang for plantation program. Around 1300 to 1500 plants will be planted there under the supervision of a group representative and the local community club. This plantation program will probably kick off in April 2011.
Project EducateOne is the project that aims exclusively at Nepali youths living in the country or out of nepal. Believers will have profiles of students and people can chose to sponsor for 3 years. If the person cant do it alone, they can form a group to help a student. The idea is to encourage the youths of Kathmandu that their little savings can change lives.

A new Nepali website has been launched in Nepal, mfashionista.com is only one out of the many fashion based sites which has been introduced recently. The small but growing fashion industry in Nepal has benefitted from the rise of the mall culture in Kathmandu. One of the figures behind this site is Calvin Gurung who also works as a photographer. You may already have heard or seen his work before but I shall share the two I most like below. Check the website out.

Ek Chin with Sahana Bajracharya

8
Sahana Bajracharya is someone who has established herself in Nepal’s showbiz circuit well in a short span of time. Graced with exotic features Miss Bajracharya can often be seen plastered across newspapers and billboards modelling various jewellery to electronic items. Her participation in Miss Nepal 2010 was her second attempt and she gained victory by bringing the First Runner-Up crown home. Through this interview I have explored as to why she decided to participate in Miss Nepal given that she was already getting somewhere and if her status or links could have put her at an advantage in comparison to her competitors. Fresh from her return from Vietnam after representing Nepal at Miss Earth, Sahana created an online-buzz after pictures of her in a bikini surfaced online. I am confident that my readers will agree with me when I say she is undoubtedly the best Miss Nepal with THE BIKINI BODY.
Nonetheless, she proves to us that she is not just a pretty face. Sahana has set her aims high; with upcoming projects to promote domestic tourism in Nepal this beauty queen may not only be beautiful 😉
Firstly, Congrats for Miss Nepal 1st Runner Up win and representing Nepal at Miss Earth, to sum it up what has the been the highlights so far and what have you yet to experience? Thank you team Nepunity! I believe, being a part of Miss Nepal in itself is an experience that takes a woman to a different level of maturity. I was a part of Miss Nepal in 2008 but unfortunately, the pageant intercepted due to fierce protest from various women activist groups. Everyday, there was something to learn and it prepared me for who and where I am today. My first venture in media also commenced here as Dabur Special Light Hair Oil endorsed me as their brand ambassador.

In 2010, being crowned Miss Nepal First Runner Up brought in more opportunites to learn more experiences, live my crown and interact with prominent personalities. (I was one of the very few people who got an opportunity to meet The NASA Administrator, Charles F. Bolden 🙂
The Crown keeps unfolding interesting events my way and I really dont know what I have yet to experience. 🙂

Miss Nepal Trio – Sadichha, Sahana and Sanyukta

Coming back to Miss Nepal, even before the pageant you were already a familiar face in the media circuit. Do you feel as if you had an unfair advantage in comparison to the other contestants?Being a familiar face in the media has nothing much to do with the competition. As we enter our training hall, we are all treated the same. We get the same grooming and the equal training. But outside the training hall, to the audience and the media, to be honest, I suppose I did. I might have got a little more preferance and coverage but again, at the end of the day, it was “ME”, all by myself, who had to fight the competition. Being a familiar face is actually a burden as you have more hopes on you and it kind of builds a pressure, which isn’t an advantage but definitely unfair, to the person.

So what was the key factor behind an already well known media personality competing for the coveted Miss Nepal title?I still wanted to be Miss Nepal, when I was’nt a known face back in 2008. Ever since I’ve known the pageant and that every year I watched it on television, I WANTED to be there. The fame did not attract me to the Crown, but the “Change” that this Crown brought. I saw how our Miss Nepals, all of them so far, proved themselves , as not only a beautiful face, but a beauty with a purpose, a woman of substance and I knew I had it all and wanted the transformation it could bring. And not to forget , every year the crown gets better and better, you just WANT it!!!
Sahana with Designer Tenzin Bhutia – also wearing his design
Out of Sadichha, Sanyukta and you, you undoubtedly looked as if you had the better preparation; your gowns, grooming and body was brilliant. Would you agree that your status helped you gain this treatment?Preparation is a must in any sort of competition and yes, I did prepare myself for Miss Nepal. Because, even if I didnt win I still wouldnt regret, because I gave my best. I read a lot, I updated myself on every topic, from politics to prices of vegetables. Physically, I did not let my laziness take over me at the gym. I would actually imagine that crown and run an extra kilometer. But once in the competition, as I said earlier, we are all treated the same. Our gowns for the finale too was chosen by our designer and choreographer.
A little story on my gown. Night before the finale, on our final trial for our gown, mine was the only gown which was a complete disaster. It looked like a borrowed nighty from my aunty. I embarrased myself by bursting into tears infront of everyone that night. But Im gald it looked good on the fianle.

More than being a media personality, my work experience was a bonus point. I was a host for a talk show, Yugantar, on Image Channel, where I interviewed, women from all fields from politicians to activists, which definitely broadened by knowledge, boosted my confidence on screen and built up my personality.

You’ve completed the main duty by going to Miss Earth, is there anything left for you to do?Yes, my main duty, that came along the crown, representation in Miss Earth 2010 is complete but my reponsibility towards the society will never end, even after I crown the next Miss Nepal Earth.
This title is a benefit to my name and I will make the best out of it. I am already working on my first documentary on Chhaupadi- A custom of forced isolation for women menstruating in West Nepal. Every year, number of girls and women lose their lives due to low hygiene and snake bites due to the isolation. This is so far the most challenging project so far in my life as I myself will be experiencing the tradition and village life. I will start shooting in February 2011.

Sahana long-before Miss Nepal
For the future Miss Nepal hopefuls what do you think they should be aware of before competing in such a national pageant?A lot of girls who apply or wish to apply for Miss Nepal think that it is only about having a pretty face and a good height. Yes, pretty face, to some extent is important , after all its a beauty pageant but it not just that.

Miss Nepal is a represenation of all the women of Nepal and most importantly, our country. So read a lot, make yourself aware on issues, it helps you grow and build interesting conversations with people.
Learn about your country and countrymen and feel pride in being a Nepali because you will get a life time opportunity to represent your nation to the world in international beauty pageants. Please do start working out atleast 3 months before you enter the pageant. If you want to look good, you will have to go through a little hardship. And most important of all, start building a positive attitude and be comfortable in the person you are!

Who is your favourite Miss Nepal till date?Miss Nepal 2009, Zenisha Moktan. Partly because she is my best friend but because she is my best friend I know her very well as a person and she is beautiful inside out. She has carried her duties remarkably well and as I mentioned earlier that my responsibility as the title holder will not end with my tenure, so hasnt for Zenisha aswell. She established a project under the name “Project Muskaan”, during her reign where she conducted health camps and raised funds for the school children in Rasuwa. She is still going strong with her project as we are organizing a fund raiser to build toilets in one of the rural villages of Sindhupalchowk. Enough reasons to have her as my favourite Miss Nepal!
Sahana sizzles alongside beauties of the world
What can we expect from Sahana on IMAGE TV in the coming days?I am no more with Image Channel but definitelty I will be back very soon on television with a travel show. I will be exploring 15 new destinations in Nepal with a motive to promote ethnic communites, their cultures and cusines and domestic tourism. This will be my next venture and my contribution to Nepal Toursim Year 2011, as an individual.

What would you like to achieve in 2011?I have actually sorted out my To-Do list for the year 2011. It will be all about chasing my dreams of making documentaries and working for underprivilidged women and children. Also, melting of Himalayas due to climate change has also caught my interest, so definitely something in the field of environment too. And a little for myself, more makeups and hopefully some Choo’s :).

Finally, thank you for your time. Any last words for lexlimbu.com surfers? If you could finish reading my interview, then WOW you guys have great patience. Thankyou for supporting me and liking my work so far. Much love !!!

Pashupati Paints; just few of her work.

I wake up at: Any hour. Depends on my mood, schedule and the night before 😉
On a Friday night: I catch up with my social life and update to city gossips.
Jharana Bajracharya is: NOT my sister nor are we related. If we were, I would have her dusky beauty too. She is one of the finest actresses in Nepal.
The Nepali guy with the fittest body is: …………! This question actually caused quite a stir among my guy friends..But I couldnt come up with one single name. I realized there are so many and I didnt want to break hearts by naming just one 😉

Sahana Bajracharya is: fearfully and wonderfully made..♥

Machine Readable Passports

3
Being the member of the ICAO, Nepal was obliged to introduce machine readable passports by March 2010 however due to various setbacks and Nepali Timing; Nepal has finally seen light and MRP’s has been introduced with the first passport given to CNN Hero Anuradha Koirala followed by diplomats.
MRP’s are very handy to travel abroad these days as they save a lot of time however there are many disadvantages for people in Nepal. To obtain an MRP passport you would have to travel all the way to Kathmandu… now think of all the less fortunate citizens who want to obtain a passport to work abroad. In the past they could’ve simply gone to their jilla and obtained it from there. Aside from that Im still a bit confused as to what is going to happen to those with the written-passport. Im guessing once the written-passport expires then you will have to obtain a MRP-passport.
Well, this is a good step forward, now the government should focus on infrastructure, better roads, street lighting, better public transport and the list will continue to 2600. ;)Â
