14 Tigers Killed In Nepal In Just Over A Year!

1
Tigers at Bardia National Park

Nepal is leading by example when it comes to conservation of the rhinos. Earlier in May, the country marked two years since its last rhino was poached (May 2nd, 2014), however the same cannot be said for the protection of tigers in the country with growing concerns over poaching activities and news of skilled poachers operating along the India-Nepal border.

A recent news report on The Kathmandu Post shared that park authorities and security officials are on high alert after receiving information about tribal gypsy groups from India entering the Nepali territory. Banjaras are known for poaching endangered animals including tigers. The news article by Pragati Shahi also shared that 14 tigers have been killed in Nepal between January 2015 and March 2016. The killings of the animal has also involved locals.

The tiger census of 2013 suggested that there are 198 wild tigers in Nepal.

You will be slightly relieved to know that two notorious poachers Sher Bahadur Lama and Lal Bahadur also known as Raj Bahadur BK have been arrested for the illegal activity. Sher Bahadur Lama committed suicide while in custody on May 14.

Fortunately, the National Trust for Nature Conservation has signed an agreement with the Zoological Society of London to raise awareness about endangered animals, conservation and poaching in the national parks and protected areas along the Terai and Nepal-India border. According to The Kathmandu Post:

The agreement signed between Govinda Parajuli, member secretary at the NTNC and Hem Sagar Baral, national coordinator of ZSL in Nepal, focuses on conducting camera trapping to study the status of tiger and their prey species, providing training to increase the capacity of government authorities working in conservation, improving the effectiveness of security network, setting up new security posts and support in patrolling inside the protected areas.

The three-year project with an estimated cost of Rs 95.23 million will be implemented with the involvement of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Reserve, ZSL and local communities, according to the agreement. It will also work to enhance the capacity of community-based units in various districts to combat poaching and illegal wildlife trade. The 13 tiger range countries, including Nepal, in 2010 pledged to double the existing wild tiger populations by 2022. Nepal is home to 198 wild tigers, as per the 2013 census. (Read More)

New Domestic Terminal At Tribhuvan International Airport

Photo: eKantipur

The new domestic terminal at the Tribhuvan International Airport was officially inaugurated on Wednesday after a two-year long delay. The domestic terminal which is located adjacent to the previous domestic terminal is a disable-friendly building made at a cost of Nrs 119.8 Million. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the new building provides twice the facilities that the previous terminal did with office space for over a dozen airlines, restaurants, rest-rooms and a large departure terminal space. The new domestic terminal has been designed to be in use till 2028. I am sure it will be in use for much longer though, lol.

This new promising development comes at a time when annual figures from domestic airlines are showing a fall in passenger movement. The authorities have yet to decide regarding the use of the existing domestic air-terminal.

I really hope the building is maintained well, cleaned well, used effectively and efficiently.

Here’s A Mashup Of Junta Lagyo and Somewhere Over The Rainbow

1

This mashup of the classic Junta Lagyo and Somewhere Over The Rainbow sounds seriously so good! The video features the Funtastic (Pani Paryo) singer Almoda Rana Uprety and a talented 10 year old Nepalese Australian singer Ayuska.

The song Junta Lagyo Tara Le is from the Nepali film Dui Thopa Aanshu which is quite a tearjerker! You definitely had to watch it. Nepali films from that era just hold a different sense originality. The English song Somewhere Over The Rainbow is from the classic timeless hit Wizard of Oz which is a dope film! It’s so fantastical! Great match up of the two songs from two pretty awesome films – and by two – very gifted voices.

Junta Lagyo Tara Le (Dui Thopa Aanshu) – Ranjit Gajmer
Somewhere Over The Rainbow (Wizard of Oz) – Harold Arlen

Nepal Army Under Criticism For Welcoming Bollywood Stars!

0
Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha arriving in Kathmandu, May 13. PHOTO: eKantipur

The Nepal Army has come under heavy criticism for its involvement in welcoming Bollywood stars Sonakshi Sinha and Malaika Arora in Kathmandu on Friday, May 13 for the event AmarPanchhi organized by the Nepal Army Wives Association. The Nepal Army has come under fire from the public on various social media platforms as well the maha-nayak Rajesh Hamal who shared “Nepal Army: The Pride of the Nation….But
when I read today’s news my pride as a citizen has been shattered….as an humble artist of this nation I feel humilated…If they had to receive the artists from abroad they should have done in plain clothes” publicly on Facebook.

According to Setopati, the Ministry of Defense has asked the Nepal Army for a clarification behind the move. When I saw photos of Sonakshi Sinha being escorted out by uniformed Nepal Army soldiers, even I was bemused by it. Slightly over the top and irrelevant maybe? Maybe the organizers should send bulky men in plain clothes next time.

I know there’s a saying in Nepal that we treat our guests like gods but I am sure the Nepal Army have better things to do than welcome celebrity guests at the airport. What do you think about it all? Was it okay for Nepal Army (and we’re talking senior officials of NA) to welcome the stars? Should they be spending their energy elsewhere?

To read more, here’s the main report from Kantipur Daily – click here. You can also read another Kantipur Daily report on Rajesh Hamal’s statement, here. To read an English report from Setopati, click here.

Taplejung Society UK Hands Over Building To Taplejung Hospital

0
New Building Contributed By Taplejung Society UK
When it comes to coming together for a cause, the Nepali diaspora can be pretty efficient. The Taplejung Society UK recently saw the completion of a hospital building which has been handed over to the Taplejung Hospital Development Committee. The new building with five rooms and two toilets was handed over during a ceremony on February 20, 2016.
The project team consisted of project leader Maj (Retd) Bhuwani Pandhak, project planning leader Dr Chandra Laksamba, field director Mr Ganesh Adhikari, Nirbacahn Adhikrita and Jiwan Pyara Maden financial director, a former Welfare Officer of Taplejung. The plan for the hospital building was initially set out by Mr Laxmi Ghising President of Taplejung Society UK. The project was successful due to the many fundraisers, donors, sponsors and active support from the Board of Trustee team from the UK.

The Taplejung Society UK was established in 2009 as a non-profit organization. The aim of the society is to create a network support for those hailing from Taplejung district in the UK. The society in UK has prioritised its links with Taplejung, Nepal as it often supports various education and medical related projects and during natural disasters.
The new building now has a reception room, laboratory, meeting room, dispensary room and a store.

Nepal Reacts To Ma. Pa. Se. (Zero Tolerance Drink Driving)

1

These two guys are SO going to be the next big thing from the Nepali YouTube scene! I love vlogs and people talking in general so unsurprisingly Nepal Reacts has definitely caught my attention for all the best reasons. This new Nepal Reacts video has Anup and Avash asking people what they think about the Ma. Pa. Se. rule… which I believe is the governments initiative towards stopping drink driving in Kathmandu. The 0% tolerance has affected many! From business owners to those wishing to hit the city with their friends.

A variety of people have shared their reaction in the video! What do you think about the Ma. Pa. Se rule or how has it affected you? Let me know!

Stay safe! Drink responsibly! If you don’t think you can drive then get a cab! You never know what might happen. Drive safe.

PS. The man who said that he heard some hospital is closing down? Lol was that for real? Or else, the dude is seriously funny. Sarcasm at its finest.

GENDER PROUD – LGBTI Fashion Show in Kathmandu (VIDEO)

0
A role model for many : Bhumika Shrestha

If you look hard enough then you can always find something interesting to attend or be part of in Kathmandu. Whether it’s talk-events, sports, arts & crafts or a good night out in the city; there seems to be something happening every weekend.

GENDER PROUD took place at the popular Kathmandu joint Trisara on May 7 with an aim to support the LGBTI community in Nepal. The event which was presented by GHAITO featured a fashion show with individuals from the LGBTI community. They not only strutted the runway but also gave an introduction to the eager audience.

There are several models and well-known figures from the LGBTI community in Nepal who have appeared in many magazines, fashion-shows and other forms of media. It is positive to see progress and acceptance of variously identified individuals in wider society. A persons sexuality should not limit them from opportunities if they are capable of delivering the required task. It is definitely encouraging to see that there are many people who are supportive and have made this journey smoother for different people.

Stories of Nepal : The Everyday Nepali

0

Stories of Nepal is a collective that brings feelings of hope, sadness, pain and joy. Jay Poudyal founded the page in 2013 with a simple mission which was  “to discover and share stories of the everyday Nepali”. Through his journey, Poudyal has not only shared stories but also used the platform to bring support for the stories; the people that you read about on Stories of Nepal. During the earthquake in 2015, the storyteller shared stories of the everyday Nepali and their experience during the challenging time and also led a fundraiser through the platform to support various individuals and communities.

As we mark one year since the April 25th Nepal earthquake, this Stories of Nepal feature on the blog is not only stories related to the earthquake but also of the true Nepali spirit. They have been selected by Jay and shared to be published on the blog.

Please do visit the Stories of Nepal page for more stories.

“There was no animosity during our times. We were farmers. We were strong communities. We were families. No politics. Do you understand? We did not seek employment. Our earnings were the crops that we grew by our own hands. Do you understand? But now, a different kind of age has taken over. No one is equal and no amount of money is enough to satisfy our greed. Do you understand? In our times, we really didn’t need money. Why would we need such a thing? The only thing we needed to buy was kerosene and salt. Do you understand? There was no buying and selling. You grow and you eat. During winter we ate homemade ghee and potatoes and yam from the fields. Do you understand? We raised animals. All of us. For milk and for fertilizers. And we were strong men. Not like those men of today who have pregnant bellies and boast about strength. They eat bad chicken and drink. Everyone carries some kind of disease. All of these diseases have names. You tell me babu. The thing is we, after all the hard work, walking distance that you won’t believe in, would make it back home before sunset, and before calling it a night, drank the purest of milk. The next morning we felt so light that we could fly. Do you understand? I don’t have any disease. Now money, when will it ever be enough. For a hundred you need a thousand, and then a lakh, and then a crore. And they started farming buildings instead of crops, in this fertile land. They all forgot about nature. We all forgot about nature. Do you understand?” (Dulal Baje, Manthali Bazaar, Sindhupalchowk) 9How would you describe your life? “Hard. Look.” 10

“His father is in India. He works in a hotel, as a cook I hear. I know he is doing as much as he can to support us. Every time his father calls, this one jumps to grab the mobile. When he doesn’t call for a few days, I find him holding the mobile in his ear and saying, ‘Baba, Baba.’ ” (Krishnaa Nepali and her Son, Bamgha, Gulmi) 11

“I spent my life happily. I find things funny and cannot become serious even if I try. There is always something to laugh at. Even during the earthquake, I laughed at how we all think that everything is in our hands. How we humans go about our daily lives and ignore nature. How we think we are all- knowing and how we act like we know the future. But look, I really didn’t know I would be answering your questions today. I would have come prepared. This is really funny.” (Siddhi Bahadur Pradhan, Shyamsadhu, Sindhupalchok)  12

What do you want to do when you grow up? “Many things.” (Harnamadi, Makawanpur 14

“They call me a mad person. But I am not mad. They almost convinced me I was. But I am not. My parents died when I barely had any senses of the world. Those who raised me to become an adolescent died in quick succession. I am left with no one – no family, no friends, no house, no food and no companion. They beat me and blame me if things go bad. They sometimes pelt stones when I get close. Children run after and around me because I have my head covered in excess rags, little do they know that even the smallest of the wind gush gives me a splitting headache. But once in a while someone comes and talks to me. I have concluded that a single person is capable of being good and bad at different times. The same person is capable of generosity and he is also capable of the most dangerous crime.”(Gyan Bahadur Dagar, Dungre 7, Gumtha, Mugu)  16

“Fear of death has to be the biggest fear. When I realized I had lived, I have really started looking at people, watching them intently and what they do. I watch my son play, and notice his laughters and his cries. I watch my husband eat and he says, ‘What are you looking at, all lost?’ I feel like I am seeing more.” (Sabita Shrestha, Balefi, Sindhupalchowk)  17

“The earthquake destroyed my house so I walked down to the market to buy a hammer and some nails to try and fix it. And I also bought this nice bag while I was at it.” (Jyurme Lama, Melamchi Bazaar, Sindhupalchok)  18

“It surprising how some lives are more valuable to you that you do anything to protect them. You forget about your own life too. This thing called love. When everything started shaking, we bent over and covered him while everything fell on our backs.” (Sabina Thakuri, Taar, Kavre)  19

“After a while the tears also run dry. I thought it’s no use anymore to just sit and cry with the children. So I picked up these tomatoes from the garden to sell at the highway. Maybe I can earn some money and buy spices and rice. Now the children cry in fear but eventually they will start crying for food.” (Mina Tamang, Taar, Jyamdi, Kavre)

1

“That day was just an ordinary day like any other. I remember there was a little drizzle. We were constructing a new kitchen because there was a lot of smoke in the old one. He was on it from the very morning. After he had finished work, he was resting. It was time to go to church but he must have been tired, and I remember him telling me that he that I should go and he wanted to rest at home and finish the work that was left. But I had insisted that he come. “You have committed to the Lord, and it is our duty to give time to the church.” So, quietly he had come with me to church. When the church collapsed with everyone inside, the lord spared me but took him away. This wonderful person, without sin and without any ill feelings for anyone. He never laid a hand on me or yelled. I would sometime shout at him but not him. He always stayed around his family. That day, because I was injured I could not move. I had not seen him until the third day but I knew he had left me. Right before the burial I saw him, I remember touching his face and crying for him to come back but he slept there in silence. I called out his name but he kept quiet. I ran my hands on his face over and over again but he didn’t say anything. As the villagers pulled me and took me away, I cursed my fate. If only I had let him rest that day, if only I had not taken him to church.” (Mishri Biswokarma, Ghumthang 7, Sindhupalchowk)

2

“When has crying been of any use?” (Met Didi in Nuwakot) 3

“There is nothing we know, but we all act like we are all-knowing. What will unfold and what destiny we have for ourselves are not for us to decide. I have been taking care of the temple for many years and I see many people queue up to pray to the gods and I have seen them fight to be the first. They pray for themselves and as soon as they are out they start scolding their wives and harshly disciplining their children. But that is not why we pray. Not for ourselves. We pray for others and only then God will protect us.” (Gyanu Dangol, Nuwakot) 4

“I am trying to be a happy person. Every morning, I wake up and decide that I will be happy. But sometimes it is difficult to be happy no matter how hard I try.” (Kanchi Maharjan, Chapagaun, Lalitpur) 5

“There is no work. There is no money. Life is good.” (Babu Kaji Maharjan, Chapagaun, Lalitpur)

6

“I lost my only son to a disease. He will never return. My tears haven’t stopped. You came, you are also my son. Come, follow me, take some Perilla seeds home. They make good pickles.” (Ama, Laprak, Gorkha)

7

“I don’t know (your) language so well. But you can take my picture and you can show it to everyone.” (Laprak, Gorkha 13

As I was explaining to her with great passion about Stories of Nepal, she nonchalantly said ‘So you take pictures and post it on facebook?’ As I elaborated further, I could see her rehearsing her pose and everything I said probably went unheard. Finally she stood with confidence and exclaimed, ‘I am ready now. Probably this will be your best picture.’ (Anju Karki, Harnamadi, Makawanpur)

15

“I want to be someone who builds houses but I am not sure if I should build my school first or my house first.” (Met him in Shyamsadhu, Ghumthang 7, Sindhupalchok)

The artsy team at Polka Studios have quite a project up their sleeve and they’re already teasing us! Their latest video promo is of Bipul Chettri’s upcoming official video for WILDFIRE! The teaser has me eagerly anticipating the release of the full video! The song Wildfire by Bipul Chettri is one of my favourites from his album and I must say from the little that I can see, it’s turning out pretty cool.

Sherpa Unity – Voices From The Mountain Video

HOW-FUNNY-POSTER

Here comes the second video from Doc McKerr’s Return to Nepal video project. The ‘Sherpa Unity – Voices from the Mountain’ is a short-film that gives a glimpse into how some mountainous communities are coping after the Nepal earthquake in April and May of 2015. The film which is part of a Return to Nepal series led by Doc McKerr who is Britain’s Goodwill Ambassador to Nepal aims to highlight the current situation in Nepal and hopes to promote tourism in the country.

I definitely found this watch quite emotional, especially hearing from Kami Sherpa. This week also marks a year since the Nepal Earthquake, 25 April 2015. So much has been said about the earthquake… I won’t add anything more but just this video for your viewing.
