23 Year old Malina Joshi of Sunsari has been crowned Miss Nepal 2011 today. Following closely was Anupama Aura Gurung with the first runner up title and then Sarina Maskey with second runner up title.

What clinched Joshi’s win was her confident and savvy answer to the final question ‘What would be the position of the world in 2050 AD if ruled by women?’, to which she said, “I don’’ think the question is appropriate enough as I feel women are already ruling the world with their dedication and persistence. By 2050, the world will be completely different and better if we’re blessed with the same opportunities and values.” Read more on eKantipur.

Real Estate Expo 2011

5

Imperial Court – Sanepa Height
The Real Estate Housing Expo 2011 recently took place in Bhrikutimandap. There were many housing companies decked with their stalls accompanied by model blocks of their homes or apartments. Apartments have surely become much more affordable with some starting from as little as Nrs 30 lakhs for 2 bedroom whilst they can rise up to 1 crore plus. Most of these developments seem to be taking place in far corners of Lalitpur or Bhaktapur with little activity in Kathmandu. Let me correct myself there, most of the projects in Kathmandu are all sold out and even these upcoming/under construction projects are quickly selling.

Out of the housing colony bunch I really liked CG Hills which is a new colony that is to be built in Hattigaunda. Perfect location as well. Their homes start from 1 Crore 25 Lakhs and go up to nearly 2 crores. When buying apartments I think one question you need to ask is regarding fire safety, what right you have when it come’s to doing more to your apartment in terms of changing the building work and inquiring about what comes with the apartment when finished. For more on apartments and homes then HousingNepal.com is your source.

PS. Its not a scam, most of these apartments ARE under construction with some already completed and have you ever thought about the mess that will be made when an earthquake hits. Oww!!

Miss Nepal 2011

4

Another year, another Miss Nepal but looks like this years batch of girls aren’t all that impressive. Let’s just hope what they say will impress the audience and the judges. The people who went to the Talent round to see the performances were not all that struck by the ‘talent’ of the Miss Nepal’s as some said their performances were pretty much lacking the energy.

The finale event will take place tomorrow evening. Best of luck to the girls’ lets hope they shine!

PS. from those little thumbnails above only Anupama Gurung and Bishnu Chemzong look pretty nice.

Dr Baburam Bhattarai – 35th PM of Nepal

7

How long will he last is the only question on top of my head.
But kudos to Dr Bhattarai for becoming Nepal’s 35th Prime Minister, now we’ve had all the Tom, Dick and Harry in power so let’s see if the Doctor can bring anything to the table.

Some info about Dr Baburam Bhattarai:
  • Born on 26 May1954
  • When he passed his SLC he topped the whole of Nepal
  • Received scholarship to study engineering in Chandigarh of Punjab
  • He has done a masters in Urban and Regional Planning
  • It is widely said that he was the one who designed the BICC centre

Audio Books for the Blind

1

Attention
There are approximately 400,000 visually impaired people in Nepal and a large majority of them go to colleges, however there are only books available in braille for up to class 10 leaving college students in a catch-22 situation. Thanks to National Rehabilitation Society for Disabled they have initiated a program where volunteers from students to working people have the option to be the voice for the blind. You will be required to come to one orientation session in Anamnagar where the team will teach you how to record yourself reading and give you general instructions and after you pick a book and language (english or nepali) then it’s up to you regarding how many hours you will spend at home reading to a recorder. Once you complete the recording the whole file will be transferred to a blind student’s MP3 and they will happily be able to enjoy reading through your voice.

Simple and effective. Right?
Please volunteer if you guys have time

Tattinai Parcha – The Photos!

15

Let’s make this short and sweet. The event was titled ‘Tattinai Parcha’ organized by WhatNext, WeFearSilence and Parcha Production at Moods Lounge on the 26th August. Aside from being a club party there was live music by Nattu Shah, Dougie Adhikari, Sonam and Sunand and the release of Yamabuddha’s mixtape. The glowing Miss Teen Nepal 2010 Kreeti Shingtan Lama was my co-host and there was various breaks and setbacks but we soldiered on through till 9PM when the performances and the fashion show choreographed by Bipen Gurung came to an end. Our DJs : DJ Rabbit, DJ Niral and Guest DJ – DJ Phuchhey played their beats till the ticker hit 11.45PM. There were various celebrities from beauty queens Malvika Subba to Samriddhi Rai and Sano Sansar heroes Vinay Shrestha and Karma… and many many other personalities from RJ’s, VJ’s and pretty faces.

It would be very biased of me to rate an event that I was part of so I leave it to you guys who came to leave the organization team and myself feedback for the show. To all, thank you for coming. Hosting was an interesting experience… an experience which I don’t think I will repeat again. Ciao!

For More Pictures : Soon.

Malvika’s House of Alternative Apparel

11

The new retail store House of Alternative Apparel which is the brainchild of Manish Pandit and Malvika Subba was launched in Kathmandu just last week! The opening had various business people to media personalities attending and cutting the ribbon. There are three collections at HAA and they are Eco Essentials, Just T’s and AIRA. All of the clothes at HAA are locally designed and made in Nepal and there is also an exclusive collection by Nepal’s most sought after designer Tenzin Tseten Bhutia for AIRA.

Men’s collection is very much limited with only t-shirts and few long-sleeves. Excluding the Tenzin Tseten Bhutia range all of the clothes are very affordable with floral print dress costing Nrs 1200-1500. The men’s t-shirts were at an affordable Nrs 750-850. Designer Bhutia’s dresses ranged from Nrs 2000 to 4200. They weren’t too messy; neat and simply classy. The clothes at HAA have a very New Look/H&M feel.

Folio Cover: Who Is He?

20

I was browsing through Facebook when I saw a small thumbnail of the image above and I thought ‘o my goddd kaslee Folio ko cover ma edit garera Justin Bieber lai haldecha’, however when I clicked on the image and it opened up by occupying half of my screen space I actually realized this is no Justin Bieber but he is ANMOL KC, son of Nepal’s popular actor Bhuwan KC.

The photography done by Kishor Kayastha make’s Anmol look like the next chocolate boy of the cine-industry! Hopefully he too can get a fan following just like Bieber. Anmol’s debut movie Saathi Ma Timro is set to launch him big-style in the movie forte of Nepal. One can definitely expect it to be a blockbuster as Bhuwan KC is behind it 😉

PS. The cover looks too messy, there’s too much writing on the left hand-side and I am not feeling the font that’s being used for ‘Carrying the legacy forward’.

The Show : Photos + Video!

10

August 20th wasnt any normal day for the masses of Nepalese youth in London and the whereabouts, it was the day THE SHOW took place. If you hadn’t heard of the much promoted event then here’s videos and photos to make you regret not knowing or not going. The Show was a presentation by The Signature (previously pulled off a very packed New Year party) and FashionBeautyBug (a fashion blogger). Now there’s so many positive things about this event though I wasn’t involved in it or attended it (Im in Nepal).

Firstly, it has brought together a lot of girls and boys from different parts of UK working as designers, hair dressers, models, technical assistants etc. Now that might not seem like any big deal but at a time when each ‘areas’ are having dispute with each other this is a ‘positive’ move.

Secondly, ‘event organizations’ are quite dumb in a sense that they do not have the capacity to think beyond a club party but thanks to FashionBeautyBug and The Signature they have pulled off quite a spectacle which will now be remembered by many and hopefully be treated as an example.

Finally, most of the designers are still students who are in education and for them to create such designs and collection in itself is a success story. I just a lot of older mummy daddy aged also went and saw that their sons or daughters can excel in the creative field if not the hardcore traditional subjects.

Ahhhh Well Done to the organization team, technical team, designers, hair dressers, models, the audience who went and basically everyone.

PS. That big puffy orange dress is wow and so is the girl, and I like that gothic black collection. So Fierce!!!

Live For Change Donates Nrs 1,02,000

4

Our charity organisation Live For Change which started off just earlier this year was raising money for Saraswati Peace School in Gorkha. The total we raised was just over GBP 880 Pounds (Nrs 1,02,000) through the sales of customized wristbands and selling food and drinks at Gurkha Cup in May which we handed over on the 19th August to founder Subhash Ghimire.

Unfortunately due to time constraints and Monsoon conditions we were not able to travel to Gorkha to visit the school and donate the money there, however we picked a school which works closely with SPS to use it as a setting to hand over the money. Koseli School is a day-time home to many slum/street children. Currently the school has just over 100 students. We had invited the founder of SPS Subhash Ghimire to receive our donation cheque and also an additional notebook which was donated by Melanie Harris from UK.

I will continue updating of the progress being made at Saraswati Peace School and want to thank everyone who donated to Live For Change and our friends that all turned up on the day of the donation program and singer Sanjeev Singh for taking out time to perform for the children of Koseli School. Our fundraiser/first project is done and now we shall move on to raising money for another needy cause.

PS. Our 15 friends also distributed copies, pencil, colour pencils etc to the 100+ children in Koseli School.

What the money will go towards:

1. Buying a motor pump to pump water from 160 metres down the hill
2. Towards the construction of a bigger library/computer room

The Facebook Movement; London Edition

3

Have you ever had that feeling on the first day of school where you just felt sick, kasto pet dukheko jasto huncha ni? Well I had that feeling. It was 27th May 2011. We only had one day left till the constitution deadline and it was our D-Day for the heavily Facebook promoted ‘Nepal Unites – London’ protest. When Pradeep Kumar Singh (one out of my thousands of FB friends) text me late one night the text read ‘Lex let’s do a protest in London to create a similar movement here as in Nepal’, I was quick to write it off. Firstly, it was too ambitious; short noticed and the people that I ‘associate’ with simply have no clue or interest in the happenings of Nepal. His follow up text changed my mind totally. I don’t know whether it was a trick he used tara it definitely worked. ‘YOU are the face behind so many events in the UK, can’t you do this?’

Amidst my final examinations there I was huffing and puffing; endlessly sharing links, photos and writing articles regarding the proposed protest outside of the Embassy of Nepal. Pradeep, throughout the whole time was a pleasure to work with; a rare find in our Nepalese community here as most are too enthusiastic with their Nepali timing and delegating responsibilities to others. People want to be known without putting in the hard work. Now, how will that equation ever work? The both of us had no experience in doing this before yet we learned a lot in the short duration – from getting permission from the council, police, diplomatic police, embassy and observing various changes along the way. The embassy I believe wanted to shove us further away from them. Understandable. But Hey! We weren’t going to give up without a push after all this was a pressure campaign.

Even before the protest, enthusiasts started pouring in their lovely opinions ‘bidesh ma gayera Nepal ko badnaam garne bhayo’, ‘eti saro pir lagyo bhane Nepal ja’, ‘could this be one of Lex’s publicity stunt again’. Certainly an icing on the cake! I could have argued with them the whole day but ke garne, I have a thing about not reasoning with stupidity. End of. During the first few days after the event page was launched on Facebook we were astonished with such positive reactions from the mass. We believed we could gather at least 100 protestors there, a very small amount considering there are hazaarau Nepalis that reside in London but for us 100 was good enough.

My energy, enthusiasm and eagerness all died on the evening of 26th. After receiving more than a few dozen texts from people apologising for their unavailability I thought to myself ‘What the hell am I going to do now’. You know that feeling you have on a Sunday night when you go to sleep and you want that night to be the longest because you can’t face school on Monday. That’s how I felt. I pressed on my friends; well those that I usually go out and get drunk with to come support me that day. That was the least I asked (it wasn’t much) and I’m not the type needy of people’s company.

As I got up on the 27th, I rushed to the toilet three times even before reaching the destination; Embassy of Nepal. I was stressed! I wanted to disappear there and then. But a comment posted from a didi from the previous night gave me the much needed determination. She said something along the lines of ‘leaders with self-doubt aren’t worthy of leading’.  I wasn’t worried about speaking in front of the crowd, my worry was whether there was going to be a crowd. Pradeep’s friends and I had put a lot into this. From voluntarily buying megaphones, printing posters, and buying t-shirts it was vital for the people’s participation to make this a success.
Surprisingly the flow of people increased and at the end of it we had 101 protestors who had signed the petition and also took part in chanting, singing, reciting poetry to giving small talks to the gathered crowd. Though I was rushing from one to another, this was the first time ever I felt the joy of being behind something. Previous experiences haven’t been so memorable. I know for a fact the moment when I held the banner alongside Pradeep and Miss UK Nepal Nabina Gurung and crossed the busy Kensington High Street with police escort that will surely be unforgettable. The ambassador even gave us twenty minutes from his busy schedule to sit down with us and talk to us regarding what our aim was and what we wanted from him. Atti ramro, I’m hoping that our guff didn’t enter one ear and leave from the other.

I felt satisfied that evening yet disappointed. I argued with myself that night, why was I so bothered with my friends not being there at the protest. The people who cared and deemed this movement as meaningful was there and I should be happy with that but nope, I wasn’t going to have that. Then again, I realized friends easily disappoint you because they know you’ll forgive them. After all, you are friends.

Tweeting For Cause

6

Just last month on the 24th of July a twitter friend invited me to a twitter event in Nepal. Now I had loosely seen @tweetforcause around my twitter home page here and there but I wasn’t too sure regarding what TFC did. I along with two friends went to an office nearby Tilganga thinking we were there to attend some small meeting amongst twitter users however it was quite a pleasant surprise when I came to know that day was the actual donation event. Twitter users who have joined TFC Nepal donate 0.20 paisa per tweet, however majority of them just make a whole sum donation at the end of each month. Mission 3 which was the 24th of July consisted of the raised funds being spent to buy customized @tfcnepal school bags, copies, pencil, sharpeners, and erasers and distributing them to the 200+ students of Sharada School.

@tfcnepal started with the initiation by few twitter users and has now grown to involve more than 500 followers on twitter. Members consist of bloggers, journalists, doctors to media personalities. Though I haven’t contributed anything financially to @tfcnepal it was inspiring to see social network being used in the right way where we could see the outcome unfold as children left with smiles on their faces.

PS. I wasn’t aware of the fact that I would be spending some time with children therefore wore my ”inappropriate” t-shirt without knowing. Please allow it.
Also, imagine how much could be raised from Facebook; IF done in the right way!

GAY PRIDE NEPAL 2011

1

14th of August was not just Gai Jatra but it was also the day when the LGBT community in Nepal came out and paraded the streets of Narayangadh in Chitwan. The ‘GAY PRIDE’ event started off around 11.30AM and came to an end just before 2PM in Pulchowk, Narayagadh. This was my first time going to such an event and I must say it was certainly an experience, a very enjoyable one at that. People were pumped, singing, dancing, there were two beauty queens of the third-gender community on top of elephants alongside MP Sunil Babu Pant who is Nepal’s first openly gay lawmaker.

Khoi, I have so much to write about it. From searching for our hotel at 1AM in the night in Bharatpur to interviewing local people and tourists – then realizing that my mike had stopped working. Kura ta lamo cha but main thing, enjoy the pictures for now and the video of the event will be on youtube under LEX IN NEPAL in a few months.

PS. This is the second Gay Pride event in Nepal
More photos will be added on the ‘lexlimbu’ page on Facebook.
