Bagmati Bridge Gets a Facelift

3
Courtesy of the Nepal Unites movement Bagmati Bridge has received a face-lift. Not only that but whilst the volunteers were at it they also cleaned the area covered by the bridge. This movement which primarily started off Facebook is a fine example of how each of us citizens should be regardless of where we are from, Nepal or elsewhere; RESPONSIBLE. You make your mess, go clean after it. If everyone followed that rule then we wouldn’t have to block our nose whilst walking in various junctions of Kathmandu. Now I know it’s easier said than done but we can try our best. It’s all hand in hand. Apart from campaigning to put pressure on the Government to write the constitution, this movement has been successful in attracting the youth, public figures from the media field and in general putting pressure. After we had our own Nepal Unites – London protest other places in USA, Finland to Australia have hosted and will be hosting such events too.

If you’re in the capital and want to take part then come along and join us in the Basantapur rally this Saturday. If you don’t know what this is about then still come along as you can learn along the way.

Cheers.

DJ K-World’s NEW Release!

3
Now this track can be described as uniting Nepali’s from all over the world, well to be specific more so DJ K-World from Thailand and the duo RnBish from the UK. DJ K-World is known as the youngest DJ in the electronic dance music scene in Bangkok! You really need to check out the video below of Kewal doing his thing and livening the crowd up. How awesome is that right? Who knew such a young Nepali DJ existed teii pani somewhere like Thailand. Bet he has THE party lifestyle!

Kewal will be in Nepal for sometime and he also lands on the same day as me on 19th July, enjoy his music at iClub on the 22nd July in Durbar Marg. His new track ‘DRINK UP’ with Ranajay and Bishal is officially released on junodownload, buy it here.

Nepal LOVES Tata Nano!

1
After much halla-khalla Tata Nano was launched in Nepal just earlier this month. Said to be the cheapest car in the world, Nano has already got a record smashing 352 bookings in just TEN days. The cheapest model is conveniently priced at Nrs 7.98 Lakhs, 45% of the bookings are for this model whilst the high-end models reach up to more than Nrs 10 Lakh.

Look’s like the streets of Kathmandu will get Nano’fied in the coming weeks when these smaller than life vehicles will hit the road. I think I’d much prefer to drive a Suzuki Swift than this… and Maruti Taxi wallah chai – lets not even go there.

Dutch Photographer’s Exhibition in Nepal

2

This weekend will see a Dutch fashion graduate Sunanda Chandry Koning’s first ever photo exhibition taking place in Nepal Art Council Gallery from the 17th till the 23rd July. The timings for the exhibition is 11AM to 5PM. Do head over to Babar Mahal to check out how and what Koning has captured in Nepal during her two-month long stay.

The exhibition is titled Hue/Saturation and is the presentation of Chomolungma UNESCO Centre which is an organization supporting artists, photography and freedom of expression.

Sunanda is also one of the many people that I came to know on the course of promoting Kohi Mero, she is fully Dutch even though her name might give off the impression that she is mixed and is very much in love with our country. If you see a gori girl going to watch a Nepali movie next time then that may well be Sunanda. ;D

Dutch Tourist Nearly Raped in Thamel

6

Here’s news that most Nepali people probably do not want to read on my website, because most only want to read about positive things about Nepal but we cannot deny that crime has been rising in the country and who do we blame? Our Government?? The blame should start from the home, the education given from parents and our choices. It’s a sucky situation for all and another sad news unfolds itself this Thursday morning. A 24-Year old Dutch woman has filed a complain against a 17-Year old Shekhar Tripathi after surviving a rape attempt on Monday. It is said that Tripathi who worked as a waiter in a pub adjoining the hotel had broken into the Dutch woman’s hotel room through her window at 4AM brandishing a knife and threatening to kill her if she resisted.

Sad. To all the girls, tourists – be careful. I know people love to come to Nepal for ‘independent travelling’ but do let near one’s know where you are and don’t walk alone too late in the evening. Lack of street lights is already a pain in the ass and having to worry about someone jumping up on you is just uneeded. Aside from rape, even general crime is on the rise. Carry a pepper spray, or cheaper alternative – khursani ko dhulo.

THE SHOW by Fashion Beauty Bug & Signature Crew

2

Signature Crew and Fashion blogger ‘Fashion Beauty Bug’ have teamed up to present THE SHOW on the 20th August. Now I have to break it down here, THE SHOW is quite a wholesome package. It will consist of a runway fashion show, live musical/dance performances from 3PM to 9PM and then after an hour break there will be an after party kicking off at the same venue from 10PM till 6AM in the morning.

Location for this event is Coronet Theatre in Elephant & Castle, London and if the Signature boys can repeat their success from the Nepali New Year Event earlier this year then we can expect the floor to be packed, Yes all the space for 1990 people. But REALITY CHECK, Londoner’s all know the struggle that ‘Nepali parties’ are going through currently, even popular event houses are failing to get more than 300/400 crowd. So Signature, you still have time left and while you’re at it I hope your promotions make an impact.

THE DESIGNERS

During the day event there will be stalls selling goods from the designers, they aren’t professional but you can expect some creative designs from them. The model’s look nice, I’m sure it’ll be a pleasure to watch the girls&boys. If you want more information regarding event, tickets and performers then click the link – HERE.

HELP Saraswati Peace School in Gorkha!

2

Saraswati Peace School in Gorkha only recently opened in April 2011, this community school was initiated by an inspiring young Nepali; Subhash Ghimire. Let’s roll to the basics, the school is in need of further support. With already 217 children enrolled, this accounts for more than the built capacity of the school. It is in urgent need of funding for getting water to the school from 165 meters down the hill, buying computers (15) and building a computer room.

What set’s SPS apart is their focus on peace and their aim to incorporate peace concept in the curriculum. They are currently on the lookout for drama teachers as practical learning is what they want to focus on for the coming days. The small charity organisation that I am part of; LIVE FOR CHANGE will be contributing financially to Saraswati Peace School. A percentage of the amount which we have raised from various events in the UK will be taken with me and handed over in August midst a public ceremony (the other percentage if you were wondering will be kept in our Live For Change bank account to assist future fundraising events and other projects). However, even our contribution alone won’t be enough, if you can then please contact Subhash Ghimire and help him directly and I will still be able to collect funds worldwide through PayPal – and I shall level out the PayPal charges too. We raised £60 at the ART Exhibition hosted by Parcha Productions. ;D thankyou.

If you were curious then the village is called ARUBARI.

Parcha’s Art Exhibition – REVIEW

6
Shreya Rai and Me
I had told my fellow Nepali friends I would be there by 1PM. ‘there’ would be The Rag Factory, the venue for Parcha Production’s ‘Ranginai Parcha’ art exhibition. More than the art, I solely went there for the musical performances. I do not get excited about many thing’s apart from Jharana Bajracharya but I had secretly been counting down to see Shreya Rai perform live, and to see what she looks like as well.

There I casually strolled in at nearly 5PM and well, let’s get down to the basics. The art was pleasing, it would’ve been better if there had been little background info on each art/photo to give us more insight. Having talked to the boys of Parcha Production’s before the event I had expected more art. There was a small entry fee of £5 for the exhibition which quite a few attendees weren’t too pleased but I believe those who came later and saw the musical performances would not complain.
Subash Thebe
Karuna Gurung
Nawal Rai
What I liked
Tene’s art ( it was weird, it stood out )
Subash Thebe’s Art ( it looked rough, shame he wasn’t there to share his insight )
Karuna Gurung’s Photography ( alluring n her original song rocked )
Prabesh Hembya Limbu’s Sketches ( definitely different )

Shreya Rai – where do I begin…she was just lovely, amazing! I got a bit baffled when I first saw her performing alongside someone else but later on she performed my favourite track Samson and not to forget the crowd pleaser Phool Ko Akha ma alongside Sexy Shishi who bust his moves.

Neelam and Sajan – they were quite the duo, one on guitar and one singing. The cover of Parelima was quite something and the crowd loved listening to Forget You.

Nicolas Rai – now this boy stole the show… our very own Justin Bieber. He sang, he beatboxed but he didnt dance. I guess we shall have to wait till the next big event for that. Definitely a talent to watch out for.

Neelam and Sajan
All in all, the exhibition was a good step towards the right direction, all the artists/photographers/musicians that were present were top notch. Parcha Production’s are finally doing what they wrote down on their info on Facebook which is to ‘bring together the whole entertainment and talent industry under one name’. As to why they spent their valuable time organizing parties in the name of promoting talent is bizarre. But hey, it’s better late than never. One last suggestion is hosting a Photo Exhibition only maybe better.

Live For Change raised a total of £60 from the event. Thank you to everyone.

Dharmaraj and Reecha – Mr and Miss Nepal Australia!

11
9th of July will probably never be the same for Reecha Dhital and Dharmaraj Adhikari, that was the day when they were crowned Mr and Miss Nepal Australia. It was the first time that such a show of that magnitude had taken place in Sydney presented by United Nepalese Arts & Entertainment Pvt Ltd. The show had a range of choreographers and quite a bunch of contestants which was very surprising considering it being abroad.

Now the main question I raise everytime such a contest is being organized is, what will the responsibility of the winners be? Most of the time it is common to see organizers not doing much once the show is over. Isn’t it the responsibility of the management to keep the winners in the limelight throughout their year of tenure. Having a set of duties awaiting the winners would be a great idea. Linking up these international pageants with Miss Nepal and Mr Nepal would take such shows to another level. If every winner from the Nepali diaspora abroad is given opportunity to be a contestant in the home pageant in Nepal – then there would be a point. This paragraph goes out to Miss UK Nepal organisation, Mr & Miss Top Model UK Nepal and the upcoming Miss Nepal USA.

Winner Male – Dharmaraj Adhikari

2nd Runner Up – Bijay Paudel

Miss UNAE – Dina Subba

Also, remember the post I shared before on VOTE for your contestant, well Yuvraz Tiwari ended up winning the Mr Cyber award. I cannot help but think sharing his profile on my website did allot quite a lot of votes.  LOL.
Congrats to the winners and the title holders! Now you all have more pressure to act accordingly and work to improve the Nepali community where you are and help Nepal.

Nepali Designer in London ; Sanyukta Shrestha

11
Designer Sanyukta Shrestha alongside Nepali Model Shristi Shrestha in London

New York has Prabal Gurung and London has Sanyukta Shrestha!

She is a London based bridal wear designer who is quickly progressing in her relevant field. Sanyukta was also one of the few mentioned on the International Nepali feature of ECS Living magazine alongside myself. Shrestha who is a London College of Fashion graduate worked for bridal design and retail industry for a good 5 years before setting up her own label.

The dresses look elegant and pure! FINE! Quite a portion of the materials of her designs are directly from Nepal and she maintains a close link to Nepal as most of the detail work for the dresses are done my hand in the Himalayan country. SKIP to 1:48 for Sanyukta’s designs on the YouTube video.

Nepal Unites is an ACTION

4

Watch the video above, it’ll well be worth your 15 minutes. He’s a great speaker, constantly mixing up Nepali and English during his presentation and making lot’s of comparisons and sharing anecdotes. This 15th July will mark the half-way of the 3 month long extension to the Constitution Deadline and Nepal Unites has once again slowly started increasing their activity. Also, Nepal is a country that runs on rumors. We need to make a habit of seeking clarification, if there is a bandha then it normally starts with a halla. As mentioned by the gentlemen in the video our unity when it comes to hating India is just uncanny. The recent hate event page created against Indian actor Amir Khan was just baseless, without any proper evidence it was written that Amir Khan had branded Nepalis as obnoxious and illiterate. The sad thing was hundreds of people littered the wall with derogatory remarks against the actor and India. Such incidents have happened far too many times. Next time you hear something say WHY, HOW and not OH REALLY.

As one of the person behind NEPAL UNITES – UK fortunately after our first and only protest we haven’t been able to do another one ( I have also been mega-busy) and this is mainly due to our busy commitments and the struggle to find enough interested participants to hold such an event. Nonetheless, I am confident given the right time and the right team we can repeat such activities again. Nepal Unites; the big umbrella has also been criticized by many for solely becoming a place where various personalities go to promote themselves or their products. I don’t know who these claims are referring to but I look at it this way, at the end of the day – they are spreading the message which is for Nepal to Unite so this is a win-win situation for all. No?

Give me your views on the video? Suggestions for Nepal Unites UK and do you really think people are just supporting this movement to get their screenshot in the media? Come on we have CyberSansar for that.

Raped Nun Faces EXPULSION From Nunnery!

19

Here’s the deets. A 21 Year old Buddhist nun was gangraped by five men in a bus in Eastern Nepal in June. The attackers included two teens aged 17 and 18. Now the reaction from the Buddhist organisation’s in Nepal is that the 21- Year old victim may face further ordeal by being stripped off her religious duty and expelled from the nunnery where she had apprenticed for the past 10 years.

Norbu Sherpa, an official of Nepal Buddhist Federation says Such a thing never happened in the Buddha’s lifetime. He did not leave instructions about how to deal with the situation. Buddhists all over the world adhere to what he had laid down: that a person can no longer be considered ordained in case of having a physical relationship. It’s applicable to both men and women.’

shocker. Really, even though it hasn’t happened before I really feel that this is simply unjust. What do you guy’s think? Is this fair on the nun? Hey’ she didn’t ASK to be RAPED!

Guitar Shop in Nepal – Tone Music Store!

14
This one’s for all the musicians out there! Tone Music Store has just opened in Tangal and is probably the biggest music store that has opened in Nepal so far. It is said that the store is under the management of SILENCE Entertainment, I wonder if this is the same Silence Entertainment that also produced the big-budget movie BATCH NO 16. Could there possibly be a link? Who know’s.

The store is selling a whole range of products from acoustic guitars, electric amps, drums to vintage guitars. They take pride in being the first to introduce Schecter Guitars in Nepal as well as being the only store in Kathmandu selling high quality brands such as Mesa, Boogie Bognor and Fender.

Yogenra Rai From Gangtok!

3

Though I lack knowledge when it comes to guitars and rock music but I can spot talent! Here’s someone that I came across recently, he is Yogenra Rai all the way from Gangtok! 18 Year old Yogenra started playing guitar at the age of 10 and since then there has been no looking back. He has played at several concerts in the North East. Judging by the screams from the crowd, Rai’s skill is loved by many and I am one of them.

First Ostrich Farm in Nepal

12
This surely deserves to be filed under #OhReally category. Ostrich Nepal has started farming 1000 ostriches in Gangoliya of Rupandehi. If you are wondering what the purpose of this farm is then simples, it is to supply about one tonne of ostrich meat in the market. Aside from the plans to sell ostrich meat internationally the company also plans to sell it’s products to hotels and restaurants within Nepal at approx Nrs 2000 per kg and he defends this price as he states that in the international market ostrich meat is priced at $90 for one kilogram.

Now I’ve never tried ostrich meat nor do I want to but I for sure want to visit this Ostrich Farm is it’s possible! I wonder how they actually got the ostriches to Nepal in the first place. Amazing to see such entrepreneurial ideas! I guess NOW is the TIME.

Navyaata Article 3 : BEING NEPALI

11

There I was again, with my favourite non-human company; Jack Daniels and Coke in my hand. It was the second Acoustic Gig held in London. As mentioned in my previous article, my hesitation to say ‘no’ resulted to me landing in the presence of the extremely bubbly YouTuber Nattu, JPT Rockerz and many other Nepalese musicians. If Nattu ever needs to think of changing her career path then I would suggest carrying on the works of the Maha Jodi. One certainly needs to empty their bladder before they situate themselves next to her. Now more about the event, imagine watching YouTube but live, also add a few technical glitches and off-beat voices. Not to forget our Nepali Timing. Yes, I’m guilty of it and was guilty that evening too. But Hey, I’m Nepali; we love to blame, right?

The gig had a handful of photographers, too many I would say. Awkward smile, forced smile, plain unhappy. I pulled off all those poses. While I waited to top up my drink, a conversation started with an eager music lover. He was a ‘fan’ of the acts performing that evening. Like how it goes, bro ke garnu huncha, ka basdai ho, UK ako kati bhayo, it was all covered. Unsurprisingly next on our guff list was the Nepali party scene in the UK. Just a month later there was a highly publicized launch of two event companies set to take place and for the next 10 minutes our talk completely focused on the organizers. When I say organizers, I mean the caste of those organizers. There I was standing opposite someone who no doubt is mature than me; certainly older and he was advising me to not attend that party as one of the organizer was a Chhetry.
If only the photographers were there at that instant. They would’ve captured a slightly bewildered ‘k re’ expression on my face. I had to ask him to repeat and justify himself for his request. It was plain simple for him; because people of Chhetry and Bahun castes are already doing well in Nepal and we can’t let them control us here in England. By that time I was just itching to get away from that bar side and find solace somewhere. Was this dude drunk or was he just speaking his mind? We can’t sugar-coat what people think and I know for a fact that there are many from our generation who have similar beliefs to the man I spoke to.

I would like to believe that there are more who want to put such caste issues behind us and be a Nepali first and foremost. The view back home could be different but for me living in UK where there’s so many people of different nationalities. I don’t want to be known for my sub-caste, I don’t want to be known as a Limbu. Most importantly, I want to be known as a Nepali. We, ethnic minorities already face a hard time establishing our national identity here and what the man’s voice echoed was just indigestible for me.

I had to go to that party. I am actually proud that a Chetry, Shrestha and Thapa were working together to pull of such an occasion. We ask of each other’s name followed almost instantly by ‘ani thar ke ho’. There’s nothing wrong with that except at times it reminds us of the negative stereotypes that have been passed on from the previous generations. What is on writing today was voiced by me when the interviewer of BFBS Gurkha Radio asked for my view concerning the mounting tendency of jatiya’ sansthas being formed in the UK. What’s more is have you noticed how hypocritical some of us can be, we take our freedom of speech too far at times by cussing yo jaat or tyo jaat but when it comes to treasures such as Anuradha Koirala and Prabal Gurung, it all fades away. It’s high time we show respect to one another for the person we are, be more civil and forget the negatives that our parents may have told us to hold on to.

Let’s be Nepali was my message and a movement that I wanted to create. Thankfully there’s always an army of enthusiasts on Facebook who are game for almost anything!  And so we did by opting to change our surname to Nepali. As expected various janne-battho’s had to give that input ‘Lex, a caste called Nepali already exists’. Well, Hello Mr Wikipedia! So does the caste Nepal. I am fully aware of that and won’t mind being known as a Nepali. O and to let you know, the response was amazing. In the beginning there was about ten of us and it just increased. Those that joined this mini-movement do not actually know the reason behind why I wanted us to be known as a Nepali but I’m sure the picture that I’ve painted today is clear to see.

Ukrainian Pop Video Filmed in Nepal

2

There seems to be some Russian connection with music videos and Nepal. Previously I had shared of a Belarussian band’s music video that was filmed in Nepal and now here is Ukrainian pop singer Vera Brezhneva with her music video ‘Real Life’ which was filmed in Nepal just this year. Shame the music video is not available in HD but it looks great. This find would not have been possible if MIJ RAI – a fellow blogger had not shared it. Check out MIJ’s blog for more updates about Nepal and the general.

Nepali Designer To Shine in Aldershot

2

The organizer’s for Top Model UK Nepal seem to be going all out for this event as they have roped in Saurav Acharya who’s a household designer in Nepal. Acharya will be designing all together for 3 sequences and 1 sequence of evening gowns just for the girls which all together is 35 outfits for the 14 contestants. Though the designer is based in Nepal his designs are set to dazzle those attending on the 30th of July at Princes Hall, Aldershot. His designs have previously been exhibited at Nepal Fashion Week 2007, 2008 and 2010, also not to forget Miss Mongol 2011. Acharya believes that fashion is about comforts and personality. His next project is designing for an upcoming Nepali film Gandarva which is based on the Gautam Buddha period, Acharya who loves a challenge is willing to push his boundaries and outdo himself.

Having started off by studying diploma in Fashion from IEC and later doing bachelors in Fashion Design from LBEF (Sikkim Manipal Uni), Saurav has been managing his own boutique store Ministry of Style in Durbar Marg for the past year. He refers to himself as a versatile designer with a knack for designing gent’s suits to ladies evening gowns.
Miss UK Nepal 2010 Nabina Gurung has also been confirmed to be part of the event; she’s a show stopper! Now I wonder if Saurav will be designing her dress too.

Chitwan’s Effort to Stay GREEN

2
Whilst in the West people are trying to go ‘green’, it’s very difficult in Nepal as there aren’t many alternatives for us to conserve our environment. We need to cut the grasslands so the animals can eat. We need to cut down trees for fire to cook our foods. Amidst all the setbacks 16 community forest groups in Chitwan district is to receive $16,000 USD for their contributions to reduce excessive carbon emissions through forest conservation.

Furthermore, another good news is that Chitwan National Park has been successful as poaching has decreased to a record low with only two incidents so far this year compared to 11 in the previous year. CNP records suggest that 148 rhinos have been poached in the last ten years, recent census state that there are just over 500 rhinos in the park.

Pictures used on this post are from my trip to Chitwan in 2009. This year we will be going to Bardia National Park instead of Chitwan. I am praying that I see the endangered Bengal Tiger. 2 WEEKS LEFT TILL I FLY TO KATHMANDU 😀

Delhi Belly BANNED IN NEPAL!

9

The recently released Bollywood movie Delhi Belly has been banned in Nepal on Sunday. Gopi Krishna Movies had been distributing the Imran Khan starring movie which faced a raid during one of the screening’s that abrupted a show. The ban was enforced due to the distributor failing to remove obscene dialogues as directed by the Nepal Censor Board. On hearing this Amir Khan (producer) has been quoted saying:

”I hope the board realizes that there are adults in their country. I am unaware of how the Nepal Censor Board functions. If they have banned the movie, then it´s their decision.”

Have you guys watched the movie, thoughts? Is the enforced ban fair on the movie?Â
