Help Nepal Network’s 20th Anniversary Held At City Hall London

0

Claimed to be the largest charitable network of Nepalis, Help Nepal Network celebrated its 20th anniversary at the London Mayor’s Office City Hall on Tuesday, 9th April. The reception was attended by His Excellency Dr Durga Bahadur Subedi, Ambassador of Nepal and the Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Enterprise Rajesh Agrawal.

What began as a ‘One Dollar a Month fund for Nepal’ grew to become a global network and an organisation that has supported and assisted in areas of health, education, disaster relief and shelter. Help Nepal Network gained more popularity during Rabindra Mishra’s appeal before his entry into politics. The evening shed light on its past and ongoing projects as well as detailing where the organisation is financially.

The event concluded with beautiful music by Ganga Thapa from Namlo Band. I must say, the venue was a pretty amazing grab! City Hall in London Bridge – with the stunning view of Tower Bridge, now that’s certainly one way to draw the crowd.

Photos have been captured by Kushal Shrestha.

FEATURED: Club Karma Lakeside

0

After a soft-opening in early February, Club Karma in Lakeside Pokhara has become the latest club attraction in the lake city. With the success of Club Karma in Kathmandu, it naturally made sense for the group to venture out to Pokhara and provide the same club experience that they are so well known for in the capital.

Club Karma Lakeside has seen the regulars from Pokhara to film actors Anna Sharma, Shilpa Maskey, Aashirman DS Joshi and YouTuber Sega Vlogs show off their moves. The club is located at Barahi Chowk. It’s definitely good to have more options for those that love a night out. Looks spacious enough for all my moveees to hit the floor – lol.

Is Pokhara About To Get A Dalle?

0

Dalle‘s momo and combo meals may be heading to Pokhara very soon! The super simple restaurant has grown over the recent years with outlets dotted around Kathmandu. Speaking to The Kathmandu Post, Subhash Gauchan, the man behind Dalle confirmed that they have verbally agreed to head West to Pokhara! They may be go overseas in the future too!

Dalle’s popularity comes down to its fast-service, easy menu and affordable prices! It’s fast-food! The one that opened up in my chowk is super shiny and colourful. It’s vibrant and I definitely think it makes the Dalle experience fun! Now they just need to come up with a Dalle mascot!

What Will The Nepal Government Ban Next?

0

Recently, Nepal banned porn and now an internet game by the name of PUBG has joined the ban. The online multiplayer game has been banned with the reason that the “game was having a negative effect on the behaviour” of young people. I’ve never played PUBG but I strongly feel that the steps that are being taken is something that should make everyone uncomfortable!

With these steps and the recent bill that vowed to bring more censorship in social media use in Nepal, it’s shocking that there has not been an outrage on a bigger scale! Let’s not forget the viral song ‘Lootna Sake Loot‘ by Pashupati Sharma which mysteriously disappeared (the official version). We need to ask out loud – what will be next!! What is next to disappear, be deleted or banned!

Some people’s inability to cope with an online game does not mean the solution is to ban the game in particular. Majority of the things that are available for us to consume, watch or read may be harmful to us but the answer is not to live through life by simply banning it.

My face is that gif of a person just looking very confused and quickly shaking my head. Like REALLY? The negative impact that games MAY have on people is not something I am encouraging but I would like to state that – it has always been there. Whether you played Nintendo, Play Station 4 or XBOX, there have always been stories and challenges but the solution is not to BAN things. We have lots of unhealthy sweets and drinks sold everyday – should we start banning them. Actually, let’s not give ideas.

Those of us who believe in the right to access information and share freely need to realise that this clearly is not all that they will ban. Think, what will the Nepal government ban next?

Dhulikhel Marks Accessible Tourism Day

0
PHOTO: Prabhas Pokharel

A special event was held on the 31st March to promote accessible tourism in Nepal and mark the second Accessible Tourism Day. Titled “Nepal for All: Bringing Business, Best Practices and Vision Together to Promote Accessible Tourism in Nepal“, the one day event in Dhulikhel saw a range of speakers and talk sessions followed by the soft inauguration of the Accessible Unity Trail. Sagar Prasai is pictured on the Accessible Unity Trail that has been designed and developed for people with access needs and the elderly.

The second Accessible Tourism Day was organised jointly by Dhulikhel Municipality and International Development Institute in partnership with Nepal Tourism Board, Nepal Army, Four Season Travel and Tours and Sangai Hami (Together We). Bringing accessibility into our daily conversation is a priority as we continue to isolate many leading to the loss of immense opportunities. Businesses from hotels, travel agencies to service sector workers need to think about the needs of all types of customers.

There are millions of wheelchair users, people with no sight or low sight and different learning needs who are still passionate about travelling and experiencing the world around them in different ways and we can definitely be more creative in how we play a part to meet the needs of all. The “Travelling Blind” BBC show makes for an insightful watch with the show following Amar Latif and his sight guide exploring Istanbul in Turkey.

READ: Making Travel In Nepal More Accessible

Media and people need to continue playing an important role in not only featuring individuals such as Sagar Prasai and Shristi KC but the positive work of businesses and changemakers who prioritise diversity and inclusion. It was very saddening to wake up one morning and see the photos of wheelchair users break down the raised-up footpaths in Kathmandu. Some sections of our city is at the perfect time for it to be made with everyone in mind and to see how easily we get it wrong is simply distressing.

Red Panda Conservation Awareness Video In Burmese

0

Red pandas are becoming a common sight in zoos and wildlife parks especially in the West. What’s even more amusing is the rise of the red pandas on social media. Their cuteness and playful character is enough for BuzzFeed to feature the animal multiple times. Some people even keep them as pets and this is a practice we must question.

Sadly, in Nepal red pandas are in the news due to poaching that’s taking place. Many people are caught with red panda hides. Unfortunately, this problem also exists in Myanmar. The wild animal needs the support of the Burmese people and wider community in Myanmar as poaching and illegal wildlife trade continues.

A special Red Panda Conservation Awareness public service announcement (PSA) video was shared in February in Burmese to get the word out to more people. The Facebook version of the video has been viewed over 1600 times.

From Dentistry To Jewellery Designing – Kajal Naina Sherchan Rai

0

Hong Kong based Nepali jewellery designer Kajal Naina won the A’Design Award & Competition in Italy in Jewellery, Eyewear and Watch Design for her project Mountain Beauty in late 2018. After working many years as a dentist Kajal Naina Sherchan Rai decided to pursue jewellery designing. It was only in 2018 that Kajal Naina was officially registered as a company. Since leaving Nepal, Kajal Naina has had the opportunity to live in several countries from Japan, Singapore to Hong Kong and they have all played a part in her education and expertise today.

Unsurprisingly, her exposure to different cultures as well as her own Nepali heritage has been the inspiration behind her designs. Kajal Naina offers bracelets, brooches, earrings, pendants to rings. You have also seen Kajal Naina at the TGIF Nepal Fashion Week 2018. You can see her heritage reflected beautifully on the Mountain Beauty collection below. That’s only a glimpse!

Additional Security With Video Door-Phone From Home Automation Nepal

0

Video door-phone is a tool that is helping households with additional security and bringing in a new level of convenience. With some homes having the main gate a considerable distance away or the main door being several floors below, the video door-phone also known as video intercom is a device that can be installed in any homes which enables the person indoors to see who is actually buzzing the door outside!

You control the system. You decide if you want to engage in a conversation, open the door or simply ignore the buzzer. It’s that easy and of course, you get to see who exactly is waiting outside. Home Automation Nepal offers video door phones with devices starting at Nrs 14,500. The company offers video door-phones across several brands including Godrej, Orvibo and HikVision. This device is ideal for multi-storey building, seniors and I would say housewives – but not exclusively to only these groups of people but to everyone really. To be secure is important and we should always double check before we open the door.

The different brands on offer provide unique features with certain products enabling homeowners to view who’s outside the door or gate on the go! It’s a mobile world after all. Home Automation Nepal also offers technological advice and installation assistance. The company that are on a mission to make homes a smart living experience are determined to make the installation a smooth experience as well.

Kantipur Conclave 2019 – Youths For Nepal

0

The Kantipur Conclave 2019 was an impressive event that brought together ideas and action from Nepal and beyond. The two-day event was dynamic in its delivery and range of speakers. With a good mix of women and men of different ages and experience, the first ever conclave by the Kantipur Media Group hit the note and ended on a high. The first day of the conclave also saw a keynote speech from Prime Minister KP Oli. The Day 2 of the conclave ended with the Kantipur Icon Awards in the evening with the presence of President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

Personally, Kantipur Conclave was impressive for me as I found many like myself there. The speakers and audience also consisted of doers and thinkers who are in their twenties and thirties. I met people I had blogged about during their early years and to hear their stories of growth was definitely a highlight. I would write more but I believe I have stated the conclave experience in the video below.

It was a pleasure to share the Youths for Nepal (English) session alongside Sumnima Udas, Sixit Bhatta and Shrinkhala Khatiwada and meet our moderator Leena Dahal. Additionally, I was also part of the Nepali Session on Day 2, Prawashi Nepali ra Muldesh, moderated by Basanta Basnet with speakers Jiba Lamichhane, Bhoj Raj Paudel and Mallika Shakya. The Nepali Session starts at 2 HRS 9 MINUTES mark.

Astha’s Muskuraye Gets Beautifully Covered

0

Astha Tamang Maskey‘s song Muskuraye was quite the song for many fans. Though the Canada based singer has been away from Nepal for some time, her music continues to reach and be covered by many. This new cover video of Muskuraye by Tashi is simply stunning to listen to. She has such a warm voice!

Just goes to show that there are so many gifted people. Don’t forget to give her a thumbs up if you like the cover.

The Kathmandu Airport Experience That You Do Not Want

1

Pepper Paudel saying “What’s your selfie station going to do after a bloody painful ride and two hours worthless bloody wait?” AND then having to queue up again to leave the Tribhuvan International Airport is my highlight of this epic Hell in Heaven vlog. Miss Paudel unleashed her fierce side as she took the camera to share the Kathmandu airport ordeal.

Experiences like this will be hugely disastrous for the morale of travellers arriving into the airport for the very first time. People with special needs and access will find this chaos even worse – and think about families with young children too. Like Pepper said, this may have been a one-off or maybe it was unfortunate for her to arrive at a busy time BUT people who work at the airport should be better prepared for busy periods. If they atleast sign-post people well, give service with a smile and get things moving – regardless of the pace – I am sure people will be somewhat okay… but there’s very little sense of order and we can see that by the video.

With the ambitious Visit Nepal 2020 campaign unfolding right before our eyes, we all know that our facilities in the country need a huge overhaul. Sadly… this is Nepal and I don’t even know what else to say after. It’s super sad because we know how crap the airport and such facilities are, we expect little and then when the authorities do the most basic like clean the toilets or get a clean carpet – we celebrate it. It’s a weird circle of celebrating the smallest changes…

Anyways’ I just hope Pepper has more LIT times in Nepal after this ORDEAL. 4 HOURS. IS. NOT. A. JOKE.

PS. There are so many incredible creative people who produce amazing content right from Nepal and then you get that super tacky Selfie Station. lol.

Dawa Yangzum Sherpa To Join The North Face Athletes Team

0

The first International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA) certified South Asian female guide Dawa Yangzum Sherpa is on a high after being selected as a Global Athlete by The North Face! The mountaineer’s new partnership with The North Face that came last week (according to THT) is definitely a reason to celebrate.

Basically, this tie-up between The North Face and Dawa is super special as not many professional mountaineers from Nepal have received such level of interest from a global brand. This also means that Dawa will receive a fixed payment – a salary – from The North Face and additional support when she’s taking on another 8000m+ mountain (varies according to the purpose).

This is spectacular news! Let’s hope many more from Nepal receive such global brand tie-up as well. Looking forward to seeing her profile soon on the athletes section of The North Face website.

Not All Nepali Film Songs Need The Remix Treatment

1
#HonestHour – I’ve noticed that several songs from recent Nepali films have started remixing old classics again. I am supportive of the idea. Young people – fans of these young stars – who grew up without listening to the original versions get to create a memory with these tracks. It’s a good idea!

Unfortunately, there’s bound to be criticism surrounding these remixes because the original doesn’t feel too old for some of us. Whether that’s Piratiko Mitho Tirshana, Aja Hamro or Chatta Rumal. Just because the Nepali films are doing this does not mean film-makers NEED to. I am not a fan of the new remixes that I have seen so far. Some of the videos shine at their colourful tacky best, highlighting what a missed opportunity that the entire product is.

While some videos show a glimmer of spark due to the radiant actors, they’ve been letdown by weak choreography and haphazard number of dancers (which is quite common with Nepali film songs). Some of the outfits worn by the actors are not pleasing to the eye.
I understand that this is a super-critical post but after years of ‘supporting Nepali cinema’, I am also like many others whose support has waned.

Gagan Thapa Goes To Harvard University

0

Embracing the student life once again is the Nepali politician Gagan Thapa who started a short course at the Kennedy School, Harvard University. Thapa is taking a short course titled “Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century”. The former Minister for Health and Population is quite a popular name with young Nepalese.

Unsurprisingly, his being at Harvard University has created quite a conversation online. It is definitely positive to see someone of his stature take time out to seek growth and I imagine, he will also have much to contribute as well. It is believed that he will return to Nepal after two weeks.

Pradeep and Bijay Dance After Nirmaya In Sydney

0

The Next Team from Australia are seen dancing after Nirmaya in the latest music video from Shyam Sital. Pradeep Lama is alongside Bijay Baniya as the two chase after the stunning Nirmaya, played by Junita Lama. I had not seen Bijay before? Seems like he is the new addition in the dance-crew from Australia.

Junita Lama also featured in the music video Yo K Vayo by Brijesh Shrestha featuring The Next Team. That has to be my favourite dance video from these guys and the video and production has a lot to do with that.

Enjoy Nirmaya from down under.
