Bhat Bhateni OPENS in Koteshwor

5

Gone are the days when you could hop into a taxi and say ”dai BhatBhateni jauna”, now you either have to say ”tyo Chakrapath ko kyaa or BhatBhateni ma bhako BhatBhateni OR tyo naya Koteshwor ko”

Yes! Nepal’s most popular department store BHAT BHATENI has opened their third store in Koteshwor last Thursday. The store is the biggest so far and had a soft launch with three floors open to the public. Owner Min Bahadur Gurung who started off humbly back in 1984 is a success story yet to reach his high. He confidently voices Bhat Bhateni’s aim to employ 50,000 individuals in 15 years. With the pace that Bhat Bhateni is going at, it could well be possible. Before you say GUFFF well the Bhat Bhateni Group are launching their next two stores in July 7 and 15 respectively in Baudha and Pulchowk.

The super-store will spread it’s reach to Pokhara by the end of this year and my very inside source tells me that Bhat Bhateni will be offering a motel style accomodation in the coming years. How yekkshaiting!! Ra, jaggahwallah’s hold on to your plots tight, Bhat Bhateni might come and buy it off you soon ;D . What’s your favourite department store? Jati naya ayepani, jati sasto bhayepani my choice is Bhat Bhateni. #always

Gurkha Justice Campaign – The Man Behind It

2

WOW. I cannot believe I just watched all of this video; it is 1 HOUR 6 MINUTES long. But, it was worth it. Gurkha Justice was a highly successful campaign which most of you probably have heard of. The aim of the campaign was to give Gurkha’s the right to live and work in the UK, basically to get citizenship here. Now to make it even more crispy clear to you; the retired Gurkhas before 1997 weren’t able to live and work here whilst those that retired after 1997 were. Post the campaign we can now see a lot of Nepali grandma and grandpa’s in the UK (being very stereotypical there hai).

Peter Carroll was one of the most prominent figures who led this campaign and Gurkhas.com recently conducted an interview with the ex-councillor from Folkestone. Peter who says that Gurkha’s are like brothers to him sends message to Gurkha Organizations to work together, to be close if not unite. So yes various janajati, gaule, profession wallah samaj haru; please be close… work together. After all we are humans at the end of the day, its not about our caste, our profession, or what rank we held during service. He is still very committed to doing more for Gurkha’s and an interesting cause which he is part of is SAVE THE TIGER, RawRRRR – this once again helps Nepal too due to our dwindling tiger population. I’ve been to Chitwan three times already and not once have I spotted the endangered Bengal Tiger, this Summer we’re heading to somewhere even more wild – BARDIA! in search of the tiger. Cutting out my jibber jabber, this 1HOUR6MINUTES was completely worthy and I want to thank Peter Carroll for all the hard work he put in for the campaign.
All the best to your future endeavors sir,

Nepali Artist in Mumbai; Laxman Shrestha

3

A remarkable Nepali artist who now currently lives and works in Mumbai is Laxman Shrestha. Shrestha was born in small-town Siraha in 1939 and received his training in art from various institutes all over the world (France, US, Germany, India).

”I usually like to be by myself. My painting demand that. As my paintings starts becoming serious, I lock myself up in complete solitude for 7-9 days. Though after the painting is created, celebrations take over” says the abstract painter.

I got asked what’s my take on the painting. I’m not into arts, I like photography and people who paint photo’s like those temples, mountains etc. I know this is abstract and it’s supposed to be like this however to me this doesn’t spell success, yet I know fellow art enthusiasts and artists will appreciate Laxman’s work and this post is dedicated to them and those seeking to see creative Nepalis. Dhanyabaad.

Ranbir Kapoor in Darjeeling – PHOTOS

4

Bollywood hunk Ranbir Kapoor was spotted in Darjeeling filming for his latest movie Barfee. The movie is directed by Anurag Basu and once again he returns on-screen with my fave Priyanka Chopra. YAY – I’ve been doing quite a few posts on Darjeeling/Sikkim recently and next up we have the online video release of the Darjeeling band AURA’s Timro Samjhanama on Friday 17th June at 7PM. Do not forget to watch. Below is an exclusive screenshot from the vid.

Getting Sexual With WAVE

9
It’s not the first time that Nepali magazines have had their take on Sex&HIV/AIDS. Most have been boring, just information – do this, do that. Common myths such as masturbating will make you taller is not true eetyadii. But the June issue of WAVE will definitely raise your eyebrows. They’ve covered sex! Nothing new but in a way that nothing is hidden.

”Yes, this is a risqué issue, so react. Agree, disagree, congratulate, condemn, vent- but react.” That’s the message that’s given out on WAVE.

The photography by Nawang Tara is just class! Not to forget the articles aswell – there’s one called Cruise Control, its so out there that it could possibly be a soft-core erotic story. They’ve also played their role well by informing us with stats and stories regarding sexual trafficking and personal accounts; what Wave excels in! And lastly, fashion blogger from the UK Swapnil Gurung has been featured.
Now my only question is – why use that particular photo on the cover? Going through the issue I can see great photos of the pair or even a solo of the girl that would’ve made a better cover.
Thoughts?

32 Hour Spent on Everest! WOAH!

8

Now I wonder which hole I was in when this all happened. Ever heard of God Angel? He’s a Nepali Guru and he leads the Heavenly Path. Now I’m not too informed on him but straight to the point. He along with a 5 member team climbed Mount Everest on 20th May. The 30 year old spent 32 hours at the top of the world, of which it is believed that he spent 27 hours meditating for all living creatures on this planet. To read the full account from his personal cameraman then hit the link up right here.

A little bit about him:
Bhakta Kumar Rai, born in an ethnic community in a remote village in Udaypur district in eastern Nepal, transformed himself into ‘Supreme Master Godangel’ after founding a sect, the Heavenly Path, when he was only 18.

Rai’s followers, who are scattered over Nepal, India, Hong Kong, Britain and Malaysia, regard him as an angel sent by God to earth to propagate peace, eradicate poverty and encourage self-healing. He is also credited by disciples with having performed miracles from an early age.

Get Dark – LAXCHA BANTAWA. A Clearcut Productions Video

17

Voila! Here it is, another lexlimbu.com EXCLUSIVE!

Feast your eyes on Laxcha Bantawa who happens to be the backbone of NepUNITY and is still riding high on the positive response from her debut music video Yatri for Manas Ghale. She is back! Showing her moves, strutting her stuff in those sleek kicks in ‘GET DARK’, a Clearcut Productions video.

For the curious minds, Get Dark is by MZ BRATT; an electro/grime artist from the UK. A personal choice of Laxcha due to her undying passion for dancing to dubstep and hip-hop with hard and heavy bass. This is probably the first time that Bantawa is standing in front of the camera as the central figure, previously she’s been more involved behind the camera with direction for NepUNITY parodies and short film.

Director Shrestha had seen the potential from the film student long ago and had wanted to work with her from early on but it was only on 1st of June that the creative duo actually made things happen. The seven hour long shoot took place at an old hall in Farnborough and boy do these dynamic duo create a fire on screen!

  • Laxcha only choreographed the routine from 10PM-2AM the previous night (last minute to the extreme)
  • Clearcut Productions will be releasing more exciting videos soon! Join their Facebook Page.
  • To be updated with Laxcha’s work and NepUNITY projects then follow them on Facebook.

This photo was taken around 1927-1928 AD during the puja ceremony of Maskey clan from Ason tole. The picture was taken on the bank of Bagmati river near Guheswori temple. My grandfather Narendra Lal Maskey (2nd row from bottom, first from right) was just a toddler – around two years old when this photo was taken. He is now 86 years old. Except him, all his relatives from this picuture are already deceased. The lady, next to him was his mother. My grandfathers’ only sister (bottom row first from left) and his elder brother were also in the picture. This picture portrays presence of male, female and children members of the Maskey clan and their relatives citing the important event. However, it is not known that who took this photo. When this picture was taken, Rana clan were still in the power in Nepal and our country was not yet opened to outside world. In the photos, we can see the unique hairstyle of the ladies of that time. They seemed to be wearing sari which was 9 metres long compared to the present day sari which is 5 metres long. Likewise, children especially girls also seem to be wearing lots of traditional jewellery such as tikh, nypusikha and big kallis. Similarly, bhadgaunle topi seems to be much in vogue these days. The other unique characteristic of this picture is presence of bicycle, which might be really a status symbol during that period. Likewise, some passer boys or outsiders beside the members of the family were seen on the top of the photo. Contributor: Kanchan Joshi

Bollywood Director Loves MOMO!

1
Manisha Koirala – Sunil Babu Pant – Director Onir
Bollywood director Onir was recently in Kathmandu for the screening of his latest release ‘I AM’, whilst he was in the capital Onir told the Times of India that the first thing he did was to eat lot’s of momos! He further confirmed his love for the popular dish by saying eating them is like being in heaven. Tell us something new Onir, we go to heaven every other day ;P .

Jokes apart, the My Brother is Nikhil director had his movie I AM screened at the Rastriya Nachghar. It was organized by the Blue Diamond Society and our very own alik-healthy looking Manisha Koirala was also present at the event. Let’s not forget that she is also acting in the movie. Must’ve been quite a function, the gay MP alongside the gay director in a country which is kaile ho kaile soon to legalize gay marriage. I heard that Onir asked Sunil Babu Pant where the best gay bar was in Kathmandu. LOL – like it exists in Kathmandu! haha!

Promising Filmmaker Shirish Gurung

13

Kesari from SHIRISH GURUNG on Vimeo.

Kesari is a short film directed by Shirish Gurung. I am a fan of Gurung’s work! The way he goes about with the story-telling is so subtle, it’s soft. It’s easily likable and enjoyable to watch. At a time when party-promo videos and short philims in general scream ‘watch me,watch me’ and do not steer too far from those loud acting it’s an immense pleasure to watch Shirish’s videos be it a promotional teaser for a party or videos such as Kesari. Another reason why Kesari vividly stands out is the acting, Kesari and her brother have done a brilliant job and the smaller characters – bajai etc have to be applauded as well.

The film was made in England yet it portrays rural Nepal and Gurung has been successful in doing that. I’ve also embedded a promotional video for a party made by Shirish, have a view. It’s certainly different from all the ”Bollywood” inspired NEPALI videos that we see *YawnYawn!

He’s someone I want to work with! I don’t know what I’d do though because acting is not something I want to do again… Hope to see more from Shirish!

Riverside Springs Resort – Escape The City!

3
RSR is situated on the highway in Kurintar and is popular with motorists and those seeking a break from the city. If you’re travelling from Kathmandu to Pokhara with Greenline buses (tyo alik mahango tourist coach) then you will most probably stop off at the resort for lunch. That was my only trip to RSR and the food was lovely though a bit khallo, shayaad bideshi paryatak ko swad milaunu ko lagi hola. There’s more to RSR; it frequently hosts beach cricket and beach volleyball competition and tomorrow Party Nepal Outdoors will have its second event there; SAN MIGUEL GRIND! Cannot wait to go there and dive in the pool and stroll by the river =D

Rajesh Hamal Turns 49!

6
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday Dear ‘Rajesh Hamal’
Happy Birthday to you!
Yes he turns 49 today and the photo above is from the premiere of his latest release ‘Dulahi’ alongside his co-star. The MAHA-NAYAK has confirmed that he is in a relationship but hasn’t given any hint whatsoever regarding who the lucky girl is! If reports are to be believed then the lucky girl is currently living abroad, now that explains Rajesh Hamal’s frequent visits abroad (once a year to USA, Japan trips).
anyways – aja Rajesh dai ko naam ma mojjj gara haii sabbai jana!

Ramdev’s Recent Antics

3
My twitter timeline has been bombarded with tweets about Ramdev. I don’t know much about him apart from that he practices yoga on the Aastha channel right? He does that funky belly suck in trick. Anyways Baba Ramdev is making headlines in India currently for his hunger strike campaign to protest againt the government for corruption. This come’s after Anna Hazare’s successful hunger strike! It only takes one person then the whole herd of sheep follow.
Now the amusing thing is Ramdev and his army of supporters were evicted and not treated so nicely by the police in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan. The Swami obviously isn’t too happy about this and went on air (NDTV) to say that next time at Ramlila, it will be Ravanlila. ”Let’s see who gets beaten” <--- like oh my days, swami jasto manche le yesto bhanne! Aicch.. Baba got swag!
Baba has also spoken out to the millions of Indians to come and join the struggle and stated that they will be given arms training. Seriously? ARMS? He has defended himself saying it will only be used for self-defence (pleaseee when is it not ;). Another interesting thing that people haven’t stopped talking about is Ramdev and his 5-star lifestyle; he arrived in New Delhi in a private jet and apparently stays at a lush high-end hotel.
Thoughts? What do you guys make of it?

Nepal’s Stolen Children – Demi Moore

4
Nepal’s Stolen Children; the CNN Freedom Project documentary will premiere on Sunday, JUNE 26 at 5.45AM. If you (like myself) cannot be asked to wake up at wee hours of the morning then you can catch the hour long doc’ on JULY 2ND at 6.45PM. Now that does sound better.

The documentary sees actress and anti-sex trafficking activist Demi Moore meeting the CNN Hero of the Year Anuradha Koirala and joins her organization to tackle the problems which Maiti Nepal deals with on a daily basis. Demi is seen travelling to different parts of Nepal and also meets PM Jhalanath Khanal. I think this is a must-watch! I shall SKY PLUS it.

Prabal Gurung WINS Swarovski Award for Womenswear

4
Last night in New York Prabal Gurung won the Swarovski Award for Womenswear at the CDFA Fashion Awards. Previously designers such as Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein have won awards there. It is touted as the Oscars for the fashion industry. Likewise, there were numerous celebrities that added the glam and oomph at the red carpet; some not so good ones aswell (Lady Gaga taking the word FREAK to the extreme as expected). Congrats to Prabal Gurung! May his hardwork continue to get noticed.
PS. He was nominated alongside the Olsen twins!

My Interview on Living Magz!

2
Wahay! Well guys, I was interviewed few months ago by the ECS Media team for the Baisakh issue (the one with Prabal Gurung on cover) of LIVING Magazine! They were running a special on International Nepali and I was one of the very few people privileged to be sharing the ‘international’ space alongside designers such as Sankyukta Shrestha, Prabal Gurung and more. I think that in itself is just amazing – be sharing the space with such inspiring people from diverse backgrounds. I am definitely spreading my wings; I shall continue to do so. Please do read the interview, I think it’s good. LOL. O’ and I just want to say thank you, for all the love… hate… and everything in between.

Kohinoor Singh – Model Turned Ani Turned WIFE?

5
Kohinoor Singh is was a happening model once, she was featured in many music videos and her name was closely linked with Nabin K Bhattarai, mostly because of her appearance in his music videos. Rumor has it that the duo had something growing between them. Moving on, the hottie made headlines when she turned into Ani Losang Dolma and led a life which was far from the glitz and glam which the people had gotten used to see.

Now where is this Ani? Few years ago CyberSansar reported seeing Kohinoor Singh at a department store nursing a baby, the post was titled ANI WITH A NANI. Amusing, I nearly laughed but not quite. Few reports  suggest that Kohinoor who was born Deepa Singh to an Indian father and a Nepali mother has turned into Deepa Golyan and is now married to a Marwadi family. Deepa/Kohinoor/Ani/Deepa is believed to be one of the few directors of Shankar Group Company. If all the reports are to be believed then Kohinoor surely has an amazing story to tell.

Music Video From Sikkim!

53

Check out the recently released music video for ‘Yo Samay’ by Leezum Bhutia. This is the second release from the Bhutia’s debut album ‘Kina Kina’. I’m taking a liking towards the video which was filmed and made in Gangtok, Sikkim. It looks nice right? O and the girls and boys of Gangtok! They look FRESH! PREEETTTYYYY! Loving it totally, a very innocent video.

Euta kura, 2:19 ma when Pema texts saying come to ‘smile land’ is a bit funny. Like, seriously is the place called SMILE LAND? Sounds funny but then again it probably brings a smile on your face ; )

Purna Lama – The DANCER!

3

You guys have to see this! Straight from NEPAL (Sarlahi to be specific) – he is Purna Lama. He was a contestant for the NTV dance show Cham Chami and I am impressed! I thought dance show’s would just have the common choreography performed in the songs that we’ve all heard of but the performance above by Purna and Rajani Karmacharya is just wahhh!! They danced in such a melancholy song; Shayad Mayama from Sano Sansar and it was superb! O’ and the ending is so filmy, I likes! Totally felt like I was watching Dancing With The Stars (dance show in UK). Entertainment to the Max! Big Support for PURNA!

Sambhidhan – What’s Happening?

2

Okay. If you are wondering what is happening with the whole sambhidhan issue then here’s what I know. The term has been extended for three months following a five-point agreement deal signed by the heads of three major political parties; UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.
Here’s an English translation of the deal.
We the political parties have reached the following agreement today, May 28:
  1. To complete the basic tasks of the peace process within three months
  2. To prepare the first draft of the constitution from the Constituent Assembly (CA) within three months
  3. To implement effectively the various past agreements reached with the Madhesi Front, including the one to make the Nepal Army (NA) an inclusive institution
  4. To extend the CA term by three months
  5. The prime minister to resign and pave the way for the formation of a consensus national unity government
I really have no idea on how things are going to shape every day for the next three months and after that. There is already mounting dispute regarding whether the PM should resign or not. Nonetheless the main thing is to keep building pressure on the Government for them to do something. Break this deadlock.
Recently Madhav Kumar Nepal left for a foreign trip abroad and few hundred had gathered to protest outside the airport against the trip. The message is clear and simple, no foreign trips until the writing of constitution.
lexlimbu lai pani lex gurung banayoo! Not Hyapppy! lol
