The dance was taught by Shusan to the team of Nepali men and women at the Nepali Senior Community in Sandhurst.

Nepali Creators Night By SOAS Nepali Society

0

Though time has passed since the Nepali Creators Night by SOAS Nepali Society on 18th January, I felt the urge to write and record it here. A lot of what we share and post on social media can be difficult to find through a Google search and sometimes disappears after a short period. The Nepali Creators Night had speakers Masna X, Samir Gurung also known as Sexy Shishi, Shanti Rai and Subi Gurung. The event was split in two halves and consisted of a panel discussion moderated by Tina Gurung and Swarnim Maden. The two moderators also happen to be part of SOAS Nepali Society.

The panel discussion unpacked themes such as success, societal pressure and education among many. Dance student Subi Gurung touched on the struggles to follow ones own interest and the challenges in convincing family members about her interest to study dance at university. Similarly, Instagram beauty blogger Masna X shared her unconventional journey from dropping out of university to finding her feet on the world of social media.

Making her passion a profession, editor Shanti Rai spoke about the importance of building experience from an early age. Rai highlighted the challenging journey that she faced after graduating and concluded by urging the young adults in the room to be persistent and hungry. Founder of Parcha and dancer Samir Gurung spoke about success and its varying definitions. Having pulled off the first ever large scale Nepali concert, Nepathya at the Wembley Arena, Gurung talked about how the event was a success in bringing people together and radiating joy. He also shared on how certain Parcha events are an outright financial success but the many art and culture focused events are promoted and organised to solely cultivate Nepali arts in the UK. I definitely think the success of these events are in encouraging more young Nepalese to think deeply about their roots and creative expression.

While the event stretched beyond necessary and felt repetitive at parts, the Nepali Creators Talk by SOAS Nepali Society was engaging and relevant to the needs of the many attendees that evening. The questions poured in many and the event proved to be a good time and space to extend network among the attendees. There was a special performance by Juan Du at the event.

I hope the society continue such talk events in the future.

Thanks to Pratish Gurung for the photos.

UK Nepali Film EIGHTEEN Ready For Aldershot Screening

0

The premiere screening of EIGHTEEN by Prem Lama took place at the Safari Cinema in Harrow on Sunday 24th February. The event was attended by His Excellency Dr Durga Bahadur Subedi, Ambassador of Nepal to the UK along with a number of Nepali stakeholders and community leaders living in London and beyond. Lama’s fourth venture showcases the generation gap between Nepali elders who have moved to the UK and their dependants who have grown up with UK as their home.

The film was received positively by the supporters, family and friends of the film. Familiar faces on screen including Prasuna Kadel, Ambika Rai, Rajdip Rai, Sanam Kumar Bairag as well as a number of non-Nepali actors that appear in Eighteen were also present at the screening. Unfortunately, a number of key people were unable to attend the very first screening at the Safari Cinema.

PHOTOS BY KK VISION

Director Lama was pleased with the response of the film and invites more to join the Aldershot screening taking place on Sunday 10th March at the Empire Hall. The first screening will be taking place from 1PM onwards with the second screening of the film at 6PM. The event will be hosted by myself and I look forward to getting to know the cast and crew of the film as well as having a brief chat about the film with them beforehand.

NIGHTLIFE: Clubbing In Kathmandu

0
LOD Club - Thamel

After reading the recent article on Party Nepal about how Nepal could be marketed as a party destination, I thought of compiling the list created by the website and sharing it here. This is not a review but simply a post where I am sharing all the clubs that one can go to in Kathmandu! I definitely feel that people can still be clueless regarding where they can go out at night in Kathmandu and hopefully by more of us writing and creating blogs/webpages – it will only take a quick google search for the next person looking for a good night out!

I will leave Party Nepal to lead the ‘Clubs in Pokhara’ post too! But I can already think of Ozone, the new Karma Club and there’s that club in Pokhara Grande Hotel too!

CLUB 25 HOURS – TANGAL

This club has hosted events from Astha Tamang Maskey’s gig to intimate exclusive parties. Located at the Tangalwood Complex, Club 25 Hours is definitely a fine experience.

CLUB FAHRENHEIT – THAMEL

Club Fahrenheit is just near by Fairfield by Marriott and is one of the more recent clubs to open in Kathmandu. From what Party Nepal says, it sounds like parking won’t be an issue and they have plenty on offer too!

CLUB IBYZA – THAMEL

Club Ibyza is right in the centre of Thamel and it’s one where everyone seems to be having a good time. You just have to climb up the stairs to the top to enjoy the club experience 😉

CLUB KARMA – TRIPURESHWORE

From having Sean Kingston to Silento – Club Karma is a popular destination for clubbers in Nepal. The club is located inside the United World Trade Centre in Tripureshwore and has a lift access direct to the club! The food that they serve in the basement parking is the perfect post-party snack!

CLUB RELOAD – THAMEL

Once upon a time, CLUB OMG ruled Thamel and now the very club has been revamped and turned into Club Reload! This super new club is one which fill quickly over the weekend and a place where it’s easy to meet new people.

CLUB DEJA VU – DURBAR MARG

Club Deja Vu has had its fair share of international DJ’s from Diplo to Steve Aoki! The club in Durbar Marg is huge in space and can easily fit a few thousand people in on a busy night.

PRIVE BY LEVEL 3 – LABIM MALL

Prive by Level 3 at the Labim Mall in Pulchowk is one place where I have not been on a Friday evening but if this photo is anything to go by, it looks like this fine dining restaurant bar certainly comes alive the later it gets.

LOD CLUB – THAMEL

The biggest establishment in Kathmandu, the LOD Club in Thamel is an extravagant experience. It’s larger than life, has tables all around and an impressive central bar and stage. The club can make you feel intimidated. It’s perfect for groups.

PRIVE CLUB – SOALTEE HOTEL

Prive by Prive Group recently opened at the Soaltee Hotel in Kathmandu. The swanky space is guaranteed to be filled by casino goers and hotel guests from the 5 star property!

CLUB SENATE – THAMEL

Club Senate in Thamel is another location that has partygoers jumping till the early hours of the morning. I am just laughing remembering my antics at Club Senate in the past.

VICTORY CLUB – DURBAR MARG

Victory Club in Durbar Marg once attracted every visible face from Instagram to Nepali cinema! The club has the perfect location of Durbar Marg and is known to be spacious with good events lined up.

Mero Euta Saathi Cha 2 To Be Made!

0

It’s official! They will be making MERO EUTA SAATHI CHA 2! The film that created quite a conversation back in 2009 will receive an addition with a sequel of some sort. Unfortunately, Mero Euta Saathi Cha 2 will not follow directly from the first film. Presented by EyeCore Films, Mero Euta Saathi Cha 2 will be directed by Dinesh Raut (Prasad, Parva, Classic). Namrata Shrestha and Aaryan Sigdel’s pair came to popularity from the first film as well as the song K Yo Maya Ho.

Apart from the film dividing the public opinion regarding it being copied from a Korean film, Mero Euta Saathi Cha went on to do well in cinemas across Kathmandu and to confirm the status of Namrata and Aaryan as new Nepali cinema actors at that time. Director Raut has not confirmed if Aaryan and Namrata will be back for Mero Euta Saathi Cha 2. In case you did not know, Mero Euta Saathi Cha also starred Dayahang Rai and Sushma Karki! Oh what a time!

The first film was super cheesy and corny but it worked for that time and I really enjoyed it. I hope the upcoming film is more grown up, still full of love but more 2019/2020 (depending on when it will be released). I would love to see Namrata again but not with Aaryan Sigdel lol.

PS. Enjoy the song below! It’s still one of my all time favourite Nepali film songs.

Herne Katha’s Belly Blues Episode Tells The Story Of Binod

0

The recent episode of Herne Katha “Belly Blues” brought the story of Binod. Binod’s life touched many viewers and the comment section is just a small indication of how people responded to his story. The episode is one which may have viewers shedding a tear or two but on a positive note, it is one where you want to celebrate a boy who is breaking the walls in being a support system for his mother, breaking the stigma around his caste, redefining what young people are capable of and at this moment in time – on a path where he is embracing his identity and exploring himself. If we dwell and dig, there will always be so many things to be sad about but with this short film we can see that Binod is at a better place and it’s lovely to see that the people who he works for seems to be accommodating him well and letting him live his life in his own terms.

The part where he ventured to Kathmandu and was recommended by people to join the sex trade was pretty sad to watch. It just made me think about the many others who may have ended up or are ending up in the sex trade through such recommendations… thinking that they have no other alternative. I am glad Binod decided to head back and I hope that he continues his education and excels academically as well as personally with whatever he chooses to do in life.

Huge congratulations to the Herne Katha team for having over 100,000 subscribers and getting the YouTube silver play button! This is a channel that deserves so much more – always in awe of their work.

Nattu’s Reveals More Than A Song With Swarga

0

Nattu’s new song SWARGA is definitely a treat for the fans! The singer wrote “Swarga is a song about finding someone just when you thought you had lost all hope. I wrote this song because I found my reason and I hope you find yours with this”. Uhm! Wow Nattu just revealed that she’s found her reason. Yaaaaas gurl! Own it! I mean, is it your voice? Or your vivacious personality? I definitely need a few tips to find that someone.

By the way, don’t you think that’s one impressive tree in the music video? I would’ve loved to see Nattu with someone in the music video though. That would be super adorable! The video by Anup Sapkota dropped just in time for Valentines Day. What a sweet move by the team behind Swarga.

A Family Break At Gokarna Forest Resort

2
The Clubhouse Restaurant

With my recent stay in Kathmandu being very brief, I knew I had to find a destination that was near Kathmandu but provided an escape from the very city. Since Nagarkot was fresh in memory, I had to find somewhere else. That was when Gokarna Forest Resort suddenly came to mind.

From larger than life weddings, golf tournaments and hosting weekend long conferences, the Gokarna Forest Resort is known for many reasons. Since it’s tucked just outside of Kathmandu, I knew that this staycation would provide that family time, meet the needs of my golf-crazy dad as well as providing me some peace and quiet before the big event for which I was in Nepal.

Family!
Family!

Located inside the Gokarna Protected Forest, the resort is a calm escape from the unorganised chaos that you’ll experience in Kathmandu. The rooms are spacious and light, equipped with all that you expect from a city hotel and even a visit from the curious monkeys if you don’t shut the window. A highlight was the cart-tour along the eighteen-hole golf course at the resort. It reminded me of Richmond Park in London as we slowly whizzed past the deers and monkeys in large numbers.

The Clubhouse Restaurant is the destination if you fancy Thai and Chinese or if you simply want to cool down with a refreshing drink and watch the sunset over the stunning golf-course. Additionally, there’s the comfortable 8848 Bar right next to Durbar Restaurant if you want to keep your social activity right in the premises of the resort.

Harmony Spa
Rest spot for the evening

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing maintenance the indoor swimming pool was out of bounds. Thankfully, the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna was available to use at the Harmony Spa. The two rabbits that stay just behind the resort office were super cute.

Overall, the stay at the Gokarna Forest Resort proved to be a relaxing getaway and one that provided plenty of family time. Whilst there were a flurry of activities from nature walk, horse-riding to yoga that was offered to us – we knew that we wanted to do as little as possible.

Many thanks to the Gokarna team for extending warm hospitality during our stay there.

The Move To Samsung Galaxy Note 9!

0
Spotted: Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Having used an iPhone since 2012, I was very apprehensive about the switch to Samsung. I was one of those people who really stuck with all the different brands but low and behold, at the end I made the jump to Apple in 2012. Now jumping away from Apple took a fair amount of time. I had a work phone that was Samsung but still, I was nervous about switching completely! I received the brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in September 2018 but it actually took me two months to get everything ready for the complete switch-over.

The first thing I thought about was the SIZE. The Note 9 felt massive! Immediately, I had worries about how it would fit in my pocket and how quickly I could get it out when I needed it. The rubbery cover does not help. Let me tell you, it is still a struggle sometimes. However, the size also happens to be one of the best things about the phone. Netflix and YouTube is an amazing experience and whenever I am reading articles or trying to copy things from one app to another, I can do it seamlessly with the two-app display!

There seems to be a lot of features that I simply have yet to discover on the Note 9. As someone who reads a lot of articles and news on the go and handles multiple social media profiles, the Note 9 is excellent as I can juggle between the different apps, copy multiple texts – save it to the clipboard and save files in plenty (thanks to the large memory size). Oh and battery? It’s amazing! I really don’t have to worry about charging it through the day.

I have a cool project coming up in a few months time and all the ground work for that was done on my Note 9 with the super-handy S-Pen! Will talk more about that later.

Unfortunately, the biggest downer about the Galaxy Note 9 for me is the video quality that you see on Instagram Stories and Snapchat! For reasons unknown, the video quality deteriorates big time when uploading clips on these socials. I try to record videos from my phone and upload later on Instagram… I feel that slightly helps but it’s not as great as it could be. Android users may be able to relate – if you know a hack around this then please let me know!

If you’re wondering what I use the most – apart from Instagram, Facebook and Twitter – it has to be Notes, Calendar and Alarm! It’s amazing and helps me keep things super-organised.

PS. I’ve linked below an ad that I did for Samsung Mobile Nepal and I must say, it is brilliant. It came out in October. I am not saying this just because I am in it but I believe mine is the best Note 9 ad out of all the ads that came out during that period – BECAUSE mine has the stunning Bhaktapur Durbar Square! My favourite site of heritage in Nepal.

Disclosure: This is a promotional post written with the intent to advertise Samsung Galaxy Note 9. #Sponsored #Ads

Nim’s Grand Project Possible 14/7!

0

He received the Guinness World Record for being the fastest person to climb three mountains higher than 8000m in only 5 days, 3 hours and 35 minutes and he’s determined to do it bigger this time around. Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims is currently on a big drive to win the heart and support of people for his upcoming PROJECT POSSIBLE 14/7. The goal that the Gurkha soldier has set for himself this time is to climb 14 of the 8,000m Himalayan peaks in a single 7 month season. His new expedition aims to break the previous record of 7 years, 11 months and 14 days.

Nims has aligned himself with several causes for this new challenge, sharing “Coming from a military background, I have witnessed many friends and colleagues who have gone through mental distress and mental health issues during and post their time in the service. I would like to raise awareness and support this by implementing the importance of positive mental attitude for healthy wellbeing. On the other hand, I aim to bring hope and opportunity to Nepal’s most impoverished children by providing them what is every child’s birthright: vital healthcare, education and a safe environment”.

He has raised over £115,000 for his expedition (online and offline) and he aims to raise £750,000. Aside from corporate sponsors, the mountain man has embarked on winning the support of the Nepali diaspora in the UK. He will be sharing his story and his vision in many community events.

0

The full line-up of Nepali Music Festival UK 2019 has been revealed! The Khani Ho Yahmu and Maya Pirati singer Trishna Gurung will definitely tug the heartbeat of thousands on Saturday 13th April at the Electric in Brixton. Gurung will most likely sing her latest release Kati Baschau Pardesamai! Joining her on stage will also be the iconic Laure! Having comfortably established himself as a NepHop rapper and also dabbled in Nepali cinema, Laure will have the crowd bopping to NepHop Ko Bato to Superraga! I am wondering if he will perform Stay Open which features Bipul Chettri and Diplo and MO – talk about a collaboration! Last but certainly not the least, the Nepali Music Festival UK will have the incredible Sabin Rai and Pharaoh performing in London.

Sabin Rai is a man of hits and also the man with the moves! From Komal Tyo Timro to Timi Nai Hau, Rai will take the audience through the years when he takes the stage at the music event. More Than 400 Nepalese Men Expected To Join The Gurkhas!

0

The talk on BFBS Gurkha Radio I heard a few weeks back was indeed true! The Forces.net today exclusively revealed that a whopping 580 aspiring Gurkha soldiers have progressed onto the very final assessment in Pokhara. Over 400 Nepalese men from across the country will become Gurkha soldiers this year, an increase from 320. This apparently is the biggest number of Gurkhas joining the army in 30 years!

That’s quite something! SO in other terms, that’s over 400 Nepalese men who will more or less be shaped by their experiences globally and their family will undoubtedly go onto be a part of the global Nepali diaspora. If this increased figure continues annually, the Nepali diaspora in the UK looks set to grow rapidly. It’s an intriguing time. I hope more of us document the stories of these men and the many Nepalis who have now made UK their home.

WE ASKED Questions The Public About Harassment on Public Vehicles!

0

Paradygm TV’s brand new show We Asked took the streets of Kathmandu with the topic harassment on public vehicles! The shocking video of a man masturbating and ejaculating on a woman in a bus in Kathmandu grabbed the attention of many recently. Unsurprisingly, women (and men) have been at the receiving end of many inappropriate behaviour, touching and comments and this can simply be evidenced in the first episode of We Asked!

Avash Ghimire and Binayak Kuikel tackle this episode with great passion and sensitivity. They’ve said it loud and clear – this should not happen in public and in a way that makes someone else feel uncomfortable. It’s pretty great to see the women in the videos so vocal, unafraid and ready to answer as well as share their experiences. Sexual harassment and sexual assault are stories that are so common in our society. We all know it happens but it will never get old until it stops.

Looking forward to what’s NEXT!

Him And I – Nepali Gay Photoshoot

2

I have written a lot about the HIM & I gay photoshoot that I did alongside Kartik in Kathmandu in September 2018. My vision was simply to showcase two men who are more than friends, who like each other, are seeking intimacy and love. The photos came out on October to mark the National Coming Out Day on 11th October. Our photos were also printed on Party Nepal magazine, The Kathmandu Post, Nepal (khabar patrika) and seen by thousands of people on social media (across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter). The likes and comments are an indication but the number of people that saw it on their feed or engaged with the photos are far more.

A friend of mine who is gay saw me running around, calling people and organising all of this on my holiday in Nepal and asked “what is this that you’re doing”, I explained the concept, that we see so much of love and romance, the imagery of family or people in a relationship showcased only between a man and a woman. We live in such a heteronormative society. He asked again “but why do you want to do it” and it was there that I brushed off my annoyance and said “if I don’t then who will”.

The super corny line has a lot of reasons supporting it. We did this shoot with very little planning and in one day we did four outfits, two locations and worked alongside four photographers, a stylist, an assistant and a make-up person. Understanding the nature of the project, the exceptionally gifted individuals that extended their support for this gay photo project also slashed their fees and still brought their enthusiasm and energy.

Surprisingly, I received a lot of messages and comments for these photos. More Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer people reached out to me after the release of these photos than my ‘coming out‘ video earlier on in 2018. Everyone associated with the photoshoot – I see a supporter in you and I hope others do too.

Today, the first of February marks the LGBT History month in the UK. I hope one day we will also have a history month dedicated to the LGBTIQ+ heroes of Nepal who have tirelessly questioned, rallied and fought for equality and acceptance. The many young LGBTIQ+ Nepalis, I encourage you to learn more about the figures from Nepal who have in the past and who continue to in the present, shape how people of different sexual orientation are seen in Nepal.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  1. SAVE THE PHOTOS
  2. USE THE PHOTOS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE
  3. IF YOU ARE AN EDUCATOR OR ARE WORKING WITH PEOPLE IN VARIOUS CAPACITIES – DO A SESSION ON RESPECT AND EQUALITY AND WHAT IT MEANS – SHOW THESE PHOTOS – ASK UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTIONS

In addition to these photos, there are some amazing pieces out there including Soongava the Nepali film with a lesbian love story in focus and more recently Sajjan Raj Vaidya’s Hataarindai, Bataasindai music video that can be used to question and represent LGBTIQ people.

PS. You may be wondering if any members of the public questioned, commented or asked things during the photoshoot – we received no negative comments or questions. We did have people who were curious and asked whether it was for a film etc. Some stood and watched. Some took photos and some simply went on with their lives. That’s how it should be – very normal.

Mysterious Marbled Cat Captured On Camera In Nepal

0
M2E1L0-0R350B320

Considered among the world’s most mysterious cats, the marbled cat has been captured on camera for the very first time in Nepal! The rare cat which is slightly larger than a domestic cat with irregular, large and dark-fringed markings and a long bushy tail similar in length to its body was captured by a camera trap in Panchthar district in Eastern Nepal. The camera trap was set up in a forest at an altitude of 2,750m a.s.l (above sea level).

The camera trap images were captured in January 2018 and was part of the study ‘First photographic record of marbled cat in Nepal’ by researchers from Lincoln University, New Zealand and Red Panda Network (RPN) published in the open-access journal Nature Conservation on January 2019. Lead author and RPN’s programme coordinator Sonam Tashi Lama spoke about the discovery by saying “This is an exciting news for wildlife biologists and conservationists in Nepal. Use of camera traps as a wildlife monitoring technique helped us to take the
first picture of this rare cat in Nepal”.

This is super exciting because it suggests that there is much to discover. The stories and mystical animals that we may have heard from elders in the villages – or through passed down stories – may well be true! Well in this case, it is. Amazing!
