Director Lama recently returned from Nepal after completing the post-production work of Eighteen. Whilst many from the Nepali diaspora in the UK seek investment in real estate and lavish luxury purchases, director Lama stated that his investment has always been to make films. The work by Lama and the British Nepalese team will undoubtedly add to the legacy of UK Nepali films. With a number of non-Nepalis also in the film, the press meet revealed that the actors learned about Nepal and Nepali culture as well as Raza Miah highlighting how the issues that the Nepali diaspora are experiencing in the UK at the present was something experienced by the Bangladeshi community in the past.

The UK Nepali film is set to premiere at the Safari Cinema in Harrow on Sunday, 24th February from 12PM onwards. Apart from Harrow, a screening will also be held in Aldershot. With a focus on the non-resident Nepali community of the UK, the director highlighted how Nepali diaspora globally will be able to relate with Eighteen and he has plans to screen the film in Germany, Portugal and New York.

Meghna Lama Talks About Her LGBTIQ+ Friendly Pink Tiffany Restaurant

0

In an interview with SRC Films, popular LGBTIQ+ figure Meghna Lama talks about acceptance and her LGBTIQ+ friendly venue Pink Tiffany in Thamel – Kathmandu. The model and business owner talks about the move of Pink Tiffany from Basantapur to Thamel and how the lounge has become a hub for gay people in Kathmandu. Apart from those identifying as LGBTIQ+, many supporters also throng to Pink Tiffanys in Thamel on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The gay venue may be the only official business that’s proudly flying the PRIDE flag. It’s located right next to the well known Sam’s Bar. Aside from discussing business and the relation between sex trade and transgender people, Meghna also wonderfully dodges a very immature ‘light segment’ where the host shares some mindless double meanings that really have no logic. I am glad Meghna pointed that out to the host. I am sure that segment has been squeezed in just to make the highlights clip sound more sexciting.

It’s 2019, we are slowly moving ahead and if people want to talk about sex then it should be done in a sensible manner seeking consent to talk about the topic from both parties involved. It is pretty pathetic that so many interviews continue to include these really silly segments just to get an sexciting title… I hope those being interviewed are smart enough to also answer back or inform the interviewers about how certain things are not needed.

Anyways’ that’s that! Kudos to Meghna and her business partners for opening Pink Tiffanys. Having been there many times during my holidays… or holigays, I can definitely say that the venue is a place where so many LGBTIQ+ people come and feel safe and own being themselves!

Priyanka Chopra Produced Pahuna Lands On Netflix And It’s Heartwarming!

0

The Priyanka Chopra produced film PAHUNA was recently made available on Netflix and I finally got around to watching it tonight. The Sikkimese Nepali film by Chopra’s Purple Pebble Pictures revolves around two child actors played by Ishika Gurung and Anmol Limbu. Directed by Pakhi Tyrewala, Pahuna is a film that lets the viewers escape from reality as we follow how the young siblings get on with their life without their parents. Of course, beyond all the cooking and cleaning – they have the mammoth task of looking after their baby brother.

The character of the priest is played by Uttam Pradhan, who happens to be a familiar actor of Nepali cinema in the past. The baje who Pranay helps with the goat is Binod Pradhan. Indian footballer Bhaichung Bhutia also makes an appearance at the monastery scene. From the way they (Anmol and Ishika) speak Nepali to the super cute songs that travel between the scenes, Pahuna is a rare treat that puts the focus on children. It’s a film that I would recommend families to watch but I can see many adults watching it as well (via their Instagram stories of course).

I am super pleased that Purple Pebble Pictures, the production house of Priyanka Chopra that focuses on promoting and producing regional cinema in India, selected this story to be made. You can read about Pahuna more on this interview story on Scroll India. I was told by singer Bartika Rai that the film is heartwarming, “maya lagdo cha” and I definitely agree. It’s adorable.

Watch On NETFLIX

PS. Enjoy the making of Pahuna below! I watched all of it and I think I fell in love with the film even more.

Handmade Bracelets From Maya Universe Academy Make The Perfect Valentines Gift

0
Having received praise for being Nepal’s first free boarding school, Maya Universe Academy is a model school. It’s an education hub where children receive quality education, thrive in Nepali and English and being creative is passionately encouraged. Being fortunate enough to visit Maya Universe Academy multiple times over the years, I have seen how much dedication goes into running and sustaining this big dream. Seeking other avenues to sustain the school, Crafts by Maya Universe was established as a social enterprise employing a small team of women from Tanahun district who produce bracelets and other jewellery made from semi-precious stones.
The hand-made products are made with love at Maya Universe Academy in Tanahun and each bracelet comes with a story card and a pouch made from colourful upcycled textile waste. Apart from the social enterprise providing the women skills and financial independence, the profit also goes to the school and helps the long-term vision of increasing access to quality education in rural areas.
The Maya Universe bracelets can be purchased from The Local Project at EVOKE in Jhamsikhel or you can shop online here.

How Nepalis Are Saving Red Pandas in Nepal

0

The Firefox Guardian showcases life from the perspective of a Red Panda Network forest guardian. The short film by Gunjan Menon follows the first female forest guardian Menuka Bhattarai as she explores the jungles of Taplejung and shares about her first encounter with the shy animal. Apart from learning about red pandas and working for their protection, Bhattarai also faces the questions from those in the community who wonder why a woman like her is taking this new responsibility.

Sadly, stories of people smuggling red panda hides continue to make the news. The Government of Nepal has launched a five year “Red Panda Conservation Action Plan for Nepal” (2019-2023) to boost efforts to conserve red pandas in the wild. This definitely comes at a right time. This also happens to be a first of such guidelines for the conservation of red pandas in Nepal.

According to Red Panda Network, “The plan outlines five major objectives targeted to improve survival rates among wild red pandas. Objectives include increasing understanding of conservation status, ecology and habitat dynamics; curbing poaching and illicit trade;  protection and sustainable manage of habitat; enhancing and extending community-based red panda conservation initiatives; strengthening cooperation and coordination of red panda conservation programs at national and international levels.”

Finding Myself In Shradha Ghale’s The Wayward Daughter

0

I finished reading Shradha Ghale’s The Wayward Daughter after a friend recommended the book to me. The book is super-relatable to the point that it is uncomfortable at parts. During a post-read discussion with my friend, he shared that he thought about my family and me when he read the book. Oh what a surprise. He even knew who Manlahari was in our family. How amusing. I laughed after hearing the names. I quickly typed back “then you’re Ganga” on Whatsapp.

In her first novel, Shradha writes our story so well. This is the story of families and people who left their gaun ghar to chase big dreams in the big city. They acquired land first and slowly added floors to their houses. With the focus on a Tamule and Limbu couple, I literally read this book and felt this was our story being written. I felt I was writing the book. Though I have never lived in Nepal for a long time, I too have done what Sumnima has by categorising the types of cousins that visit and stay with us from Taplejung. Those that arrive to study, those that stay till they get their visa for ‘bidesh’ and those that are there for medical check-up sheck-up.

The strength in this book lies in how well Shradha has written and developed the characters with respect. It’s a simple read and the characters are people who you will find in your own families and neighbourhood. Most importantly, for a reader who happens to be a Limbu, a son of a Gurkha and all too familiar with the two worlds of gaun-ghar and Kathmandu clashing – this book is our story that many of us are living right now.

EK CHIN WITH SIPORA GURUNG

2

Since establishing herself as a volleyball player at a tender age of thirteen, there really has been no turning back for Sipora Gurung. Born into a military family, Gurung describes her childhood as an active one and she comfortably states that she was physically fit from a young age. The recent #10YearChallenge also gave us a glimpse of Sipora when she was a child decked out in Manchester United football kit gifted by her father. The very photo also appeared on BBC Nepali’s coverage of the social media trend.

As a sportsperson, Sipora won many medals with her team and received recognition from Nepali volleyball fans from a young age. She became the youngest player at the 10th South Asian Games in Sri Lanka, playing for Nepal at the age of 13. After an unfortunate knee injury during a volleyball match when she was eighteen, the trajectory of Sipora’s life and long-term career started to change. During the downtime away from volleyball, Sipora participated at Nepal’s biggest beauty pageant Miss Nepal in 2013. Gurung shares how her supporters were apprehensive in learning about her participation at Miss Nepal. She also went onto do a Gurung film Ghalek followed by Yamphawati and Bhui Manchhe. Whether it be sports or cinema, Sipora has a “star” written all over her life.

Though far away in USA, her photos continue to be liked and discussed by many and even featured on BBC Nepali so while she’s comfortably tucked away from Nepal, I virtually sit down for an Ek Chin With… to find out what exactly is keeping Sipora Gurung busy.

Disclaimer- Not really a #10yearschallenge 😜 It was almost 14 years ago when I was first introduced to #Volleyball . Instead of buying me Barbie and snoopy, my baba used to buy me volleyballs, footballs and badminton . When I asked my baba about this, baba always replied to me ‘ I wanted to raise you like a “𝓢𝓸𝓷”Baba used to love @davidbeckham and @manchesterunited then as much as I do now. Maybe I am influenced by him or may be not. He used to buy me Manchester United’s jersey while I was training for Volleyball. Coming back home from School at 4 pm and getting ready for the training by 430 was my daily schedule. @goldstar_shoes shoes has always been my best companion ever since I was introduced to sports in my early childhood. My school had a strict rule ‘ Goldstar in every Sports activities’ but We were never sponsored by Goldstar 😜 What a pleasant flash back. Situations are definitely different now but #DREAMS are still the same. #volleyballdreams

A post shared by 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗘𝗣𝗔𝗟 🇳🇵 (@siporagurung) on

LEX: Sipora! It has been such a long time. How has your US stay been so far?

SIPORA: Hey Lex! I know it has right. I am learning a lot inside the class and outside in the real world too. Encountering with completely different situations and learning new things every day. I have always stayed far from home ever since I was a child from boarding schools to volleyball tournaments…always travelling around but I have never been far from home for this long. I miss home, food cooked by my baba and miss my family but other than that life is good. 😉

LEX: Ah!! Nothing like home comforts. So what takes you to America if I may ask?

SIPORA: I am doing nutrition science as my major & taking exercise physiology courses as well. So mostly taking science classes and you know how that goes, that is also the sole reason I have been using social media very less these days. I am working on my dreams.

LEX: That’s superb! It must be a huge change for you as well. What are few things you really enjoy about being there?

SIPORA: First thing I would say are the highways here. I love driving and for me whenever I am happy or sad hitting the road is one of the best therapies there is. Second would be travelling. America is very big and diverse. I really enjoy visiting different states and experiencing diversity. I have already been to fourteen states and excited to experience more. America is the world. You can find little Asia and Europe inside here. A third has to be that nobody recognizes me here, so I can get ready in ten minutes, put on the moisturiser and sunscreen and am able to walk confidently without makeup everyday which is a rare case if I am in Nepal.

LEX: Interesting! Does that mean you are different when you are in a place where people recognise you compared to when you are somewhere where no one recognises you?

SIPORA: Though I am not a huge make up person, it does take time to get ready… having to think what I want to wear when I am going to large functions where people would recognize me. Having said that it doesn’t mean I wear whatever to places where people would not recognize me. Of course I can easily wear joggers and polos to classes as many don’t recognize me here but when I do go to large Nepali functions I do keep in mind about what I wear and how I look 😉

LEX: Cool! I can make sense of that. You already talked about missing home food and when you do miss Nepal, is there anything that you do?

SIPORA: My mom calls me every day. We talk for hours and she teaches me how to cook Nepali ghar ko khana. I think once you start living abroad you miss Nepali food the most. Lex I am sure you agree with me on this one. Simple things like beautiful sunset and a moon in the sky changes my mood. I glaze into sky for hours. But when I need a kick off, I put my headphones on and listen to ‘Thunder’, ‘Radioactive’, and ‘Believer’ by Imagine Dragon.

LEX: I definitely hear you there! Many people follow you and for those that are looking to move overseas what advice would you give to someone who is leaving Nepal and moving to USA?

SIPORA: Come with a willingness to learn and explore. Make your heart and mind strong. Be ready to face many surprises. Most of the things that you are going to experience will be for the very first time. Be ready to enjoy the power of freedom but don’t get carried away.

LEX: We’ve read and heard so much about your journey as a volleyball player! You’re a star in that arena but please share with our readers when you started learning the sport?

SIPORA: I am one of the privileged Nepali athletes who got an opportunity to train volleyball professionally at the age of eight. Even before that my baba, who is not a professional coach started playing and teaching various outdoor sports to me. I don’t remember but I was probably around 3 or 4 years when we started our daily morning jog. I was always a sporty girl from childhood.

LEX: You are away from volleyball and Nepal, what do you do now during your free time?

SIPORA: I am far from Nepal but definitely not far from volleyball. I think volleyball is not limited inside the court. I am working on something bigger behind the scene. Lex, you’ll be the first one to know. Every time I get a chance, I go see new places, visit a new restaurant and explore new things. America is a huge open book and I am experiencing each page slowly and I am loving it. Just enjoying the mid-twenties of my life 100%.

LEX: Where do you see yourself five years later?

SIPORA: Haha! Interesting question. I don’t have a long-term plan. I mean I do have it but currently I am super focused on my short-term goals which will eventually lead me to my long-term goals. For now, I want to say I will have at least 2 degrees on my hand and working in the field I love.

LEX: Your use of social media has gone down since you left Nepal, why do you think that is?

SIPORA: The one and only reason is my studies. I entirely changed the field of my education from business to science. So, it is pretty tough for me. I spend a large hour of my day for research and revise which directly affects my social media use. Maintaining good grades is a pressure too. I was always good in my studies and I don’t want to disappoint my family and myself too. I have taken large credit classes to finish my course as soon as possible which takes extra hours of study every day.

LEX: When you introduce yourself to someone in US for the first time, what do you say?

SIPORA: I always say, Hi I am Sipora and I am from Nepal. And I always question them on whether they know Nepal? Where it is and I start googling pictures of Pokhara and show the best picture of Lakeside with Fewa Lake and Mt. Macchapuchre in the background and say that I was born and raised here, I grew up running there every day and tell them about all the mountains we have, not just the Everest. Lex, you have no idea how many people that I have already invited to Nepal.

LEX: That’s super sweet! You definitely are an ambassador of Nepal. As a visible figure in Nepal and on social media, how did you find adjusting to life in US?

SIPORA: Adjusting to life in the States was pretty difficult in the beginning but it is falling into its right place now. From my early age, I was an outgoing person. I used to travel a lot for tournaments and such so, I kind of knew the lifestyle abroad and was prepared but didn’t have first-hand experience. Of course, nothing beats home and my heart is always in Nepal. Things are tough, but comfort and growth are antonyms.

Ruslan Vodka’s Swimsuit Calendar With Priyanka Karki To Make A Splash!

0

With their super cheesy tag line “It’s Happy Water For Fun People”, Ruslan Vodka has slowly been expanding their presence from presenting events, radio, sponsoring Miss Nepal, actors, musicians to models. What the vodka brand have been teasing for 2019 is an exclusive annual calendar featuring the go-to Ruslan girl Priyanka Karki!

In the photo snapped up by Sanjog Rai, the actress is living it up in luxury on the poolside of Tiger Palace Resort in Bhairahawa. The swimsuit calendar featuring Priyanka will be available very soon and is surely expected to make a splash! Whilst I have found some Priyanka Karki x Ruslan Vodka shoots questionable, this 2019 calendar gives off a better feel!

Sajjan Raj Vaidya’s Hataarindai, Bataasindai Video Is Very Adorable!

1

Writing “This song is a celebration of love, known and unknown. Here is to another year of love”, Sajjan Raj Vaidya gave us a wonderful surprise with the gift of Hataarindai, Bataasindai on the first day of 2019. The musician’s treat is guaranteed to be on the playlist that will be blasting throughout the year. The song is consistent with the style of sound that he has been offering us till date.

Directed by Nurbu Lama, the music video is a surprise! I won’t share any more. Have a watch and let me know what you think! All that I will say is, the male model from the very beginning is super cute. Ha! No spoilers there.

Lastly, thank you Sajjan for such a beautiful song and music video! Through this work, we can see your support towards the larger community and many will proudly call you an ally from here onwards.

Two Men Share Their Story Of Poaching A Rhino

0

Nepal often celebrates zero poaching year of rhinos, a year of no rhino deaths due to illegal poaching of the endangered animal. However, there are ups and downs along the way. While we read news of people who are on the run or who have been captured, we hear very little from those that were involved. We never hear their side of the story. In this video from ENSIA produced by Rajneesh Bhandari, we see a human face and voice behind the poaching and discover what led them to the killing of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros.

The video is a tremendously sad viewing that brings to question many things from the state of the country, our diverse groups, poverty, access to education and information. What did they get for their involvement? Nrs 2000 only. It is distressing to know how little some have in Nepal (and the world) and how easy it is to prey on those in the most difficult of circumstances.

Let me know what you think would be a solution or your point of view is. I’d love to see a different perspective in this situation.

Pangong Project Dive Deep Into Dolpa’s Phoksundo Lake

1
Photo: Antoine Janssens

We have some incredible beauties in Nepal and the Phoksundo Lake in Dolpa happens to be on the top of my list! The Pangong Project is a high altitude diving expedition which took place recently consisting of divers, photographers and a camera crew to explore the hidden waters of Phoksundo Lake! The objective behind the project was simply to explore, research and document. I guess it was to do something that hadn’t been done. Phoksundo Lake is located at a height of 3600m above sea level.

Photo: Loic Ray
Photo: Loic Ray
Photo: Antoine Janssens

Unsurprisingly, the project drew questions regarding the exploration of a sacred lake and whether permission was sought. The Pangong Project group have responded and you can read it here (it’s not in English) or you can read the translated version in English below. The group will release a documentary video in 2019. Well I certainly am interested to see this video.

[reaction – our philosophy and values]

Following an article published in the daily arcinfo of Monday, 22 October, on our expedition, we received several accusations, wrongly, of desecration of sacred place, some even going to accuse us publicly and without foundation of corruption.

We take these attacks very seriously and we see ourselves in the obligation to clarify and publicly deny these accusations affecting the project and our values, but also to the people who supported us and trusted us for more than a year Preparation.

In advance, it is important to clarify that the primary purpose of this expedition project is not recreational, but it is good to study, on our scale and from a new angle, the impact of high altitude on underwater diving. A very poorly documented aspect of this practice. The Himalayas are one of the only two mountain chains in the world (with the Andes Cordillera) to offer us lakes of so high altitude.

The Expedition team has a special relationship with these mountains, especially with Nepal. Some of us have been travelling there for over thirty years. An unconditional love for this region of the world that has made us undertake this project with the greatest respect for local cultures and customs and the environment in which we are évoluerions. To undermine traditions and beliefs was therefore not an option, and we put a lot of importance and energy into it.

We started, in 2018, close collaboration with a nepalese team and contacted the inhabitants of the village to organize a ceremony with a monk upstream. We did not reach the lake, loaded with our equipment, without the prior agreement of the villagers and a religious authority.

On the other hand, the very sacred aspect of the lake has evolved in recent decades with the arrival of the new generations and the opening up of these regions, so far That is why we have obtained the authorization and the blessing to dive in, once again, in the greatest respect.

The Reception of the inhabitants exceeded our expectations and gave rise to beautiful exchanges. We took a great deal of pleasure to explain to them what we were doing and to make them discover the hidden face of the lake next to which they have lived Just as they will have shared with us a moment of their daily lives, their smiles and their vision of the world, which we would obviously all have.”

SHOCKING STATISTICS: 300,000 Children Live With Autism In Nepal

0

A recent article on The Kathmandu Post on Parenting Autism shared that approximately 300,000 children in Nepal live with autism. The special condition can present difficulty with social communication and interaction. While it’s unclear if there is a more recent figure that is accurate, I did find that “300,000” happens to appear on several articles including on the website of AustismNepal. The website further adds “There are no reliable estimate for Nepal as autism is not known to many people. There is a lack of awareness amongst people and diagnosis on this is weak. It is estimated that there are about 2,50,000-3,00,000 Person with Autism (PWAs) in Nepal. Among them about 60,000-90,000 PWAs are severely affected”.

Don’t forget to watch the interview of Dr Sunita Amatya on Namaste TV show where she speaks about autism (in Nepali).

Sunil Babu Pant’s Open Letter To Prime Minister KP Oli

0
Photo by Brian Sokol for The New York Times

The former member of the constituent assembly of Nepal Sunil Babu Pant has shared an open letter to Prime Minister KP Oli asking why the Government of Nepal has not been working towards bringing greater legal protection and rights for the LGBTI+ people in Nepal. It was on the 21st of December in 2007 when the Supreme Court of Nepal made a landmark decision to create laws to protect the rights of LGBTI people. When same-sex relations became legal on this day eleven years ago, many celebrated and soon expected the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, many things have yet to still happen.

The founder of Nepal’s first LGBT organisation, Pant is currently in Nepal where he has been interacting with many former colleagues and individuals working on LGBT rights.

PS. If you want more insight on Blue Diamond Society, Sunil Babu Pant and the queer community of Nepal then I highly recommend you to read Kyle Knight’s article “Outliers: Sunil Babu Pant, The Blue Diamond Society, and Queer Organizing in Nepal”.

His Open Letter:

Hon Prime Minister @kpsharmaoli #kpoli

I am writing this gunasho to ask you “why Nepal government repeatedly failed to implement constitutional rights of gender and sexual minority communities’ and supreme court’s orders to insure our rights and equality before the law”?. Civil code, criminal code and many other acts formulated or being formulated by the parliament and your government have ignored gender and sexual minority communities. Government has failed to count this marginalized communities into the national, provencal and local government’s budgets and programs. Your own slogan and signboard appears to be meaningless for so many of us, which says: inclusion, participation and development; as your government excludes and marginalizes all the gender and sexual minority communities. You can check your own government-data where you can easily see that there is a big ZERO inclusion of gender and sexual minority communities anywhere in and around government programs, policies, budgets, jobs, education, development etc, which makes us uncomfortable and angry, this should make you uncomfortable and angry too.

After such a long struggle and so many changes in the country, if situation does not change for us what is the meaning of having democracy in Nepal?

I wish you all the best for you not to fail each and every nepali community, including gender and sexual minority communities. Let us know how we can help you so that we can feel ‘your government is as our government’ too.
Thank you for your anticipated attention towards our gunashos, needs and aspirations

The Altitude Bar serves delicious Nepali Thali Set and cocktails to cool you after your trip to the mountains. Of course, you can sit and sip and enjoy the mountain view too!
