First Prize Winner: Monica Jha

Trying to describe a photograph in words has to be one of the toughest things that I have ever attempted doing. It feels like I am frozen and bewildered in imaginary wetlands of amazon rainforest. Like being in that moment when an infinite horizon awaits right in front of you but you are awestruck and dumbstruck, all at once. ‘Being Nepali’ to me means visiting your friend’s place only to feel this bliss watching her mother worship Buddha and Shiva with the same sincerity. To be capable of internalizing boundless beauty and unexplained diversities, to be able to express oneself with unadulterated understanding of liberty and dignity. It means to live off my memory book of diverse people with stories from many different landscapes of geography and history. Being Nepali also has meant knowing what wonders simple living and high thinking does and how it transforms a mortal into a being.

After 20 odd years, today I wonder if memories are really that special or if melancholy and bliss mix together to make them look like dreamy bygones. The 2 P.M Hindi movie on Saturday for me makes for such a memory. Every week on Nepal TV with so much togetherness and excitement, those movies were watched probably by everyone who had the access. Somewhere during the movie this man’s piercing call for prospectus clients gets me all shaken and distracted. Trying to get everyone’s attention to enterprise his “tarkari” he screamed louder the second and the third time, I am a little annoyed. I then can not help but stare at his sweat drenched kurta only to end at the infinite wrinkles on his face. One phrase would always sound louder though “भैया, यता आइज !”, louder because it echoed for days and many years.

Why did it matter when I knew that the chances of him being treated as a lesser Nepali were a lot higher than him being accepted as an equal human, did he deserve to be called “Dai”? He did not look anything like the “Nepali” we had read about, nor did he sound as melodious as the many singers who hold another country’s Nationality but keep being loved by my nation because they look more “Nepali” than he did or I do. He only deserved to be treated like an “Other” because we have for generations been taught that Nepal is a yam between two massive blocks and anything could happen. Hate had to be taught in the name of patriotism because darker shades of skin colour could be more venomous that dark souls.

This picture was taken in January 2016 in a small village only a few kilometers away from the highway named Fulhara in Saptari district. When us capital dwellers were singing songs of nationalism as the newest democracy which boasted of surviving our neighbor’s atrocities, some waited for days to avail something as simple as cetamol and a blanket to survive harsh realities of winter. When I saw with my own eyes the distances people traveled to survive each day, democracy incapable of restoring people’s belief in humanity stopped making sense anymore. This picture to me means the world we have overlooked to integrate into the New Nepal, Nepal that does not complain but continues to work each day believing in a better tomorrow. It succeeds in reminding me of my failure as a democratic Nepali incapable of providing essentials of relief and strength to the ones who actually are in need. This picture never fails to remind me of the hypocrisies we have accepted as a part of our reality, the latent part of human evolution which is cunningly by the power holders manipulated under the cover of social institutions and belief systems.

To be able to learn something and contribute back to what help me become me, is that not the core of all associations and progress? Isn’t that what a social being is supposed to do, I then fail to comprehend how we can afford to waste any time in trying to dissect the things we have little or no control over, especially difficult when we have always had lush assets of nature, teachings of great souls and mystic energies. In times like these ‘Being Nepali’ has also meant being lost and confused, times when the choice is between sovereignty and identity or the graded badge of nationality. The heroic pride I was feeling in making the fourteen hours long journey happen amidst chaos stricken region, started getting overshadowed by this piercing feeling of helplessness. Cetamol and blanket then do not suffice, the long journey becomes nothing compared to years of wait a big part of our nation has waited to be accepted as equals. In that moment I could not help but question my duty as a human and a Nepali, my place as a citizen, as the most significant part of a democracy. When we say we believe in the songs of unity and compassion, why doesn’t it irk when newspapers write stories of life threatening never ending scarcities? Why does the bravery we claim to have been born with not serve in harmonizing this never ending muddle between Nepal aama’ and the flaking arrangements of our Nation State?

I grew up believing that being Nepali was to be compassionate in our actions and to be in sync with Buddha’s soul, until I witnessed a deeper reflection of our reality in the rural parts of Nepal. The world devoid of basic amenities, a caring governance and an equal meaningful representation. With enough gray matter but no defined structure a social design that would have worked better as a directive has become an amoebic governance. In such times being Nepali also has meant being victim of my mind’s compliance to nation’s autocratic demands. When we have people around us constantly designing our way into the journey only we can take, we become complacent and our vision is blurred to things that are closest and real. We chase our dreams in a strangers’ life, not internalizing our strengths. After many years of chasing those unrealistic goals and failing miserably at them as a beautifully scarred soul, I believe I have finally found my art and love. Photography has helped me feel and see more beauty in pain or pleasure than ever.

I dedicate this photograph to the women who have for infinity been the “Shakti” we have built all our realties upon and a zillions of martyrs who have kept the spirit blazing. It is also dedicated to people who have been told that they are the lesser Nepali because of their skin colour or because they speak a different language or because they have had a distinctive style of expression. Also to all of us who have prayed and worked to see Nepal that shines and loves, similar to what Martin Luther King had imagined when he had said “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”.

As a Nepali I am going to believe that this is a transient storm and a brighter day free of biases and full of peace awaits us. The day when we will stop fighting about Buddha’s humanly existence and care for his teachings and greatness more. The day when love will set us free and we will no more have to fight to establish diversity and bring peace. That day when we will truly understand and accept that “जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी” is not just our national motto but an integral part of our belief system that has shaped our individual and national identity. This is my ode to all humans across the globe who carry in their hearts a piece of Nepal and have pledged their solidarity in the journey to establish justice and equal rights for all.

CINEWORLD To Screen Nepali Films

0

Cineworld, a leading cinema chain in the UK will be screening the Nepali film GAJALU starring Anmol KC, Shristi Shrestha, Menuka Pradhan, Gaurav Pahari and Salon Basnet at the Cineworld in Aldershot on August 26. The film will also be screened at eleven other Cineworld across the UK on August 26, 27 and 28.

The Nepali team who have established this collaboration with Cineworld have chosen Gajalu to be the first Nepali film at Cineworld. They hope to be able to screen eight Nepali films annually at various Cineworld cinemas across the UK.

Cineworld-Nepali-Team GAJALU-CINEWORLD-UK-NEPALI-CINEMA

This is a wonderful step towards the right direction. I hope there are more well-made films that come along our way. Hopefully filmmakers from Nepal can think about adding an English subtitle for films that will be sent abroad as well.

Now I’m thinking where else would Cineworld be able to screen Nepali films? Aldershot, Ashford, possibly Greenwich, Wembley? Do you have a Cineworld near you and a big enough Nepali population?

Singing together as VJ Priety, the duo have thousands in following and their melodious covers have even got their own dance covers. You’ll be delighted to know that VJ is back with his own original ‘Yaha Sabai Jana’ from the upcoming album ‘Paint Me Love’. Mr Ghimire really seems to have a lot of experience with love 😉 He also previously had a song titled Maya Garchhu Timilai where he looked all emotional and even shed a few tears in the video.

This new song which has a beautiful video remembers a love from the past. The outdoor scenes between Vijay and model Sara look so lovely, they make a cute couple too. What do you think? He should totally give acting a shot, would be interesting.

The Dream of Farnborough

0

    “The Dream of Farnborough”

                                                          -Hardik & Harsit Gurung

“11.00 AM, July 18th, 2020, Farnborough International Airshow (FIA), Hampshire, England- The meeting regarding the acquisition and financing of multiple aircrafts with the aircraft manufacturing company, has been a success. A newly established airline company in Nepal is finalizing a multimillion-dollar agreement. As the founders and executives of the new airlines company, we sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the aircraft manufacturing company. Looking forward eight years from now, we envision managing and leading a successful airline company in Nepal”. Above is an excerpt from the first paragraph of our graduate school application essay written four years ago. Considered as the Mecca of airshows, FIA is held in even-numbered years on the month of July. Our eccentric ambitions after four years seems like a distant daydream and undeniably needs a mammoth planning to triumph this aspiring goal. A MOU of such caliber has the potential of turning the aviation industry of a country thereby boosting the economy and tourism.

Farnborough International Airshow provides trade and marketing opportunities for many airliners around the world where multi billion-dollar aircraft deals are signed. On the second day of FIA 2016, Malaysia’s AirAsia placed 100 Airbus A321neos worth $12.6 billion; India’s GoAir signed $7.7 billion deal for 72 Airbus A320neos and Chinese carriers placed multiple Boeing 737s & 787s worth billions of dollar. This literally led us to scratch our heads and made us think why we struggle to place even a single order. A logical explanation would be China, India, and Malaysia having strong economies. On the contrary, our flag carrier Nepal Airlines (NA) only holds a dismal 11% international market share. A country where foreign carriers control 90% of the available international market share is a rare occurrence in itself. Recent flight disruptions caused by the lack of maintenance of NA aircrafts justifies the need of additional aircrafts. Our own Nepalese carriers whether it be a flag or private should control our lucrative aviation market. Regardless, Nepalese private sector needs to rise and seize this asymmetrical void.

Boeing and Airbus studies have already indicated that China and India are among the fastest-growing aviation markets. Asia is destined to overtake the U.S. as the world’s biggest plane market within the next two decades. The region will collectively need more than 10,000 aircrafts and 50,000 pilots. Nepal’s central geographical location between China and India provides the competitive advantage to become a transit point amid the two gigantic countries. Meeting such demands require introduction of government policies and industry standards that are in the interests of aviation industry and airliners. We need aircrafts, airports, and human resources along with strong leadership and stable political governance to succeed such visionary aviation ambitions. Recent constructions and developments of international airports in Bhairawaha and Pokhara is a symbolic step to attain these objectives.

Aviation demand and necessity already exists in the Nepalese market. Innovative ideas, optimism and youth involvement will define tomorrow’s Nepal. During our 60-year aviation history, Nepal has never ordered a wide body aircraft. Perhaps the epitome of Nepalese aviation industry will be the day when our dream of placing order of Boeing 787 Dreamliners becomes a reality at a future FIA. The subsequent milestone would be operating these wide body aircrafts on direct London Heathrow to Kathmandu flights serving many Nepalese living in Farnborough, United Kingdom.

A visit to newly opened Whoopee Land Amusement and Water Park sounds like the best way to beat the Kathmandu heat. The water park in Chobhar opened to the public on July 6 and offers seventeen different rides for visitors.

According to KTM2Day, Innovations Pvt. Ltd has invested NRS 250 million in creating the park. The park operators are hopeful that Whoopee land will be the destination for family and young people seeking a weekend activity and a water-park experience. Photo: Himalaya Airlines (Facebook)

Here’s a positive news from the Nepali aviation scene. The new airliner Himalaya Airlines has announced that it will be increasing its three-weekly Kathmandu to Doha flights to daily flights from July 11!

The airline which flies an Airbus A320 to connect the two cities hopes to make travelling between Kathmandu and Doha easier for the many people living and working in Doha. Hopefully, this daily connection will also make outbound travel to Europe and Americas easier for those wishing to fly multiple airliners.

Himalaya-Airlines-Doha-Kathmandu-2016

I wonder what city the airline will be flying to next.

Airlines such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways have a huge following on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and it’s nice to see that Himalaya Airlines have also created their profile on all three of the social networking sites. Hope they’re interactive and prompt online and offline.

PS. Hopefully, customers will be able to purchase tickets online and see Himalaya Airlines on skyscanner and various other flight apps and websites.

Watch The NEXT’s Incredible FUNTASTIC Dance Cover

0

These FUNTASTIC dance cover videos keep getting better!!! The NEXT dance group from Australia are the most recent group to share their dance cover of Almoda Rana Uprety’s FUNTASTIC (Pani Paryo) song and this may just be the best one yet! I am loving the choreography so much.

Not only does this video by The NEXT showcase incredible dancing but even as a video, it’s makes a great watch. From the setting to the camera-work, you can clearly see a lot of thought went towards creating this dance cover.

My two highlight from this dance cover is the chorus part from 1:33 and then the part with the group in traditional Nepali outfit – mindblown – the guys doing the dancing makes such a cute watch.

Dope!!! They have mad skillssss. You would not want to be in the middle of a dance-off with these ladies and gents lol.

Media Personality SANJAY GUPTA All Set To Make Cinema Debut With SAFAR

0

He’s one of the busiest MC’s, a staple voice at Radio Kantipur and equally familiar on TV, Sanjay Gupta will be making his Nepali cinema debut on September 30 with the road-trip film SAFAR. The film by Ashish Shrestha follows the story of three friends on a road trip from Dallas to San Francisco! It already looks like a tonne of fun!

SAFAR took sixty days to film across the US and along with Sanjay, the film stars Manan Sapkota, Nurja Shrestha and Shibir Pokharel. As the trip progresses their stories unfold, collide and inspire. Of course, the boys also hit Vegas! I wonder what sort of story unfolds in Vegas 😉

In SAFAR, the popular media personality plays the character of GAURAV, a complete extrovert who is a fun-loving, honest and at the same time a little vulnerable and very mischievous.

The teaser of SAFAR hit the web on Thursday, June 30. The coming of age drama is a production by Nepalis living in USA. Okay if this is the teaser then I can’t wait for the trailer!

PS. Sanjay will be making a TV comeback soon!

Brace Yourself For The CHAPALI HEIGHT 2 Trailer!

0

Now this is a film that I’ve been eagerly waiting to see! I was actually surprised at how enjoyable the first film Chapali Height was. The first film made more news for its sexy skin show, forgetting the fact that there were actual interesting plot twists and story there. Thankfully it looks like Chapali Height 2 may be even better!

The sequel has the most beautiful faces in Nepali showbiz right now; that’s the very popular Ayushman Joshi, Mariska Pokharel and Paramita Rl Rana in the lead. I am sure the fan-girls and fan-boys have August 18th blocked on their calendar.

Ayushman looks like he goes through a rollercoaster of emotions in the film. I am pretty excited lexcited for this one and so happy that I will get to watch it. Phew.

What do you make of the trailer? Yay or nayyyy?

PS. I love the way Ayushman says, “fuck you” kinda sounds like “fock you”. Lol. I really wasn’t expecting this. Danggg. He even kicks her… this is serious dramaaaaaaaah.

Nepali Guy Coming Out – VIDEO!

2

Here’s a heartwarming video of Sagar (Legendary Saga on Youtube) coming out and sharing that on YouTube! This is probably one of the very few Nepali coming out stories that I’ve read or watched on YouTube. It’s a brave action and one that I believe will inspire many others who may be facing a tough time coming to terms with their sexuality or being themselves around people.

I am proud of Sagar and I agree with the things that he shares in the video. No matter how difficult it may be, it does get better but you also have to take the step in accepting yourself and believing in yourself. A gay man getting married to a woman for the sake of family and society may in the long-term go on to hurt not just himself but somebody else too.

Coming back to Sagar, I am so happy that he has shared his coming out story online. We’ve seen and watched so many coming out stories from YouTubers, musicians, actors – mainly Hollywood stars and it’s wonderful to have someone who’s from Nepal, who could be your friend, your brother – anyone – sharing their story.

To many more; be comfortable in your skin. Own it. Be it.

PS Zindagi – The New Nepali-English Sitcom!

0

P.S. Zindagi, short for Post Seismic Zindagi is already several episodes in and it is probably one of the freshest web-series that a lot of people are watching right now. Although it has taken me a while to get around to watching the Nepali-English sitcom, I must say that the team have done a marvelous job in promoting the show. I see it being mentioned everywhere and by everyone; from newspapers to celebrity promo videos – the team seem to be very well on it.

Having watched three episodes of P.S. Zindagi, I enjoyed the very chilled pace at which each episode moves and it is really down to the individual characters and their relationship with one another which makes the show. The sisters are a pleasure to watch and I find their relationship being very real, I feel like I definitely know a few who are just like them.

More importantly, I appreciate the fact that P.S. Zindagi has included Nepali-Muslim characters and tried best to showcase their culture and language.

Now I just need to sit back and get some time to catch up with the rest of the episodes.

Let me know what you think of P.S. Zindagi!

PS. (lol) – if you like P.S. Zindagi and would like to support the webseries then find out how you can get involved by viewing their most recent videos on YouTube.

Uni’ of West of England Win Nepalese Inter-Uni Dance Competition 2016

1

This year’s Nepalese Inter-Uni Dance Competition was held by last years winners Kingston University Nepalese Society (KUNS, UK) on the 3rd of June in Aldershot. Several Nepalese societies from different parts of the UK participated in the event which had BBOY Sexy Shishi (Samir Gurung), UK Talent Hunt Winner Sujata Rai, Miss UK Nepal 2012 Durga Gurung and myself as the judges.

University of West of England (UWEN) won the competition on the day with their spellbinding performance which the judges and the audience equally loved! I love how they incorporated different cultural attires (people) and their performance really followed a nice storyline. The dance type was varied and even the guys did an incredible job. Following UWEN were University of Surrey with their upbeat performance which bagged the second prize and first-timers Buckinghamshire New University Nepalese Society proved to be super successful with them bagging the third prize! Buckinghamshire New University Nepalese Society also had the best support in the venue – no one could beat their screams and applause!

Inter-Uni-Nepalese-Dance-Competition-UK Inter-Uni-Nepalese-Dance-Competition-UK-1 Inter-Uni-Nepalese-Dance-Competition-UK-2

All in all – the event was an all-out entertainer with every performance from the participating universities and guest performances enthralling the audience. I love how skilled some of the dancers really are! Also, May-June is such a tricky time to have such events due to the exam period and it’s amazing how these individuals rallied together to organize and participate in an event like this. I was amazed to see Uni of Middlesex Nepalese Society’s performance. They had 12 people dancing at the same time. I can’t imagine how they coordinated the rehearsals for 12 people.

Way to go folks! Well done!
