Kalo Pothi Screenings in London!

3

Now here’s a film that I’ve been looking forward to ever since it’s incredible run in the international festival circuit. Kalo Pothi by Min Bahadur Bham will be screened in London in July as part of the London Indian Film Festival.

The film which follows the friendship of Prakash and Kiran won the Best Film Award at Venice International Film Critics’ Week (an independent section) at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. From what I’ve heard and read, Kalo Pothi is also doing wonderful business in the cinemas in Nepal. You can still catch a screening in selected cinemas right now.

The 90 minute long film will be screened at the Crouch End Picturehouse on Saturday 16th July at 3PM and at the ICA Cinema on 17th July at 3PM.

KALO POTHI – 16 July – Crouch End Picturehouse

KALO POTHI – 17 July – The ICA Cinema

So excited! Slightly torn between which screening to attend. Hmm!

Hope you guys spread the word, get the tickets and be there to witness this work of art!

SYNOPSIS:
Year 2001, a temporary ceasefire brings much-needed break to a small war-torn village in Northern Nepal, bringing much joy among the residents. PRAKASH and KIRAN, two young close friends, are also starting to feel the change in the air. Though they are divided by caste and social creed, they remain inseparable, and start raising a hen gifted by Prakash’s sister, with hopes to save money by selling her eggs. However, the hen goes missing. To find it, they embark on a journey, innocently unaware of the tyranny brought by the fragile ceasefire.

Model Varsha Thapa Writes About Her Days Of Struggle

1

At a time when it’s normal for celebrities and non-celebrities to share atleast one photo a day and update friends, followers and everyone else about what they’re eating, where they are and how they are feeling, New York based model Varsha Thapa comes across a little different. There are times when I wonder where on earth Varsha Thapa is. Thankfully, I recently discovered that Varsha has several blog entries on her personal website.

The entries are very honest and I believe come from the inner world of Varsha! Way better than selfies. Yay. Her most recent post ‘Peel the Orange’ posted on April 30 talks about the challenging beginning in New York when she arrived with just $1000 USD in her pocket. With a $100 per week allowance that barely lasted two days, the model shared that the beginning was far from what it is now.

Her reflective posts give an insight into the world of a hard-working Nepali girl with a dream to make it big in what I can only imagine to be a competitive industry in one of the fastest moving cities in the world. From being bullied and called a bamboo for being too tall, Varsha seems to have found her inner-self and inner-peace now. The four posts so far end on a positive note.

I hope she continues writing more posts on her site and doing well and being involved in things that make her happy!

VARSHA-THAPA-SATYA-JEWELRY-2

Full Post From Varsha Thapa’s “Peel the Orange” post:

It’s amazing what time can bring to your life! In 2011, I came to New York after receiving my big three year contract with Wilhelmina models. Boy, was I thrilled when I landed in NewYork city, the fashion capital, to work as an international from Nepal. Freshly off the boat from home, I was a girl with desires to make it big in the modeling world! Yet, it is safe to say, I was too young to even realize what I wanted out of life. All I knew was that I wanted to have a very successful career as a model, make my own living, be famous and live the “celebrity” life just like Miranda Kerr whom I followed religiously! And yes, I am brutally honest about being materialistic because who wouldn’t be, if they were in my position.
Well, it wasn’t an easy start. Forget the cake that I’d dreamt of, there wasn’t even a cherry! I started out with some test shoot pictures in my book and ran around the city with it, going from one casting to another only to be crushed with rejections. Everyday was pretty much the same. I’d wake up, get dressed in the best possible outfit and sometimes it would seem as though the casting director took a notice of me, after having laughed on a little joke I’d made or seeing how great I’d looked or even knowing the fact that I was from Nepal but after weeks of patiently waiting, there were no signs of a call back. I’d come to New York with only 1000 $ in my pocket and that was running out because I hadn’t booked any jobs for months. My modeling agency would lend me an allowance of only 100$ per week which didn’t make up for even two days of expenses that New York held me accountable for. Aside from the allowance, I had a mountain of debt that I had to pay to the agency, for the model house I was staying in! I felt completely hopeless.

Having been in so much pain and sorrow over my failed start I began beating myself up over every little thing. But then one day right after one of my meditation sessions, a beautiful thought crossed my mind! I realized that I’d been putting all of my energy into the wrong things! Yes, I wasn’t the most successful model in the industry neither was I a Victoria’s Secret Angel like Miranda Kerr. I was far from living the celebrity life and most of all, I was broke! Thankfully all of that struggle was a blessing in disguise! I realized I was chasing a completely wrong goal. That night I sat down and redefined my goals. I bought a cardboard, cut out some pictures to create a vision board. And this time I pasted pictures of my happiness! They were of my mother, my dogs, my friends, and nature. I wrote about how I wanted to open rescue centers for stray dogs of Nepal, and other countries that don’t have rescue centers for dogs. I recently added “saving 10% of my earnings towards the victims affected during Nepal Earthquake” to that list.  I had started putting all my energy into the positive arenas of my life and more importantly into issues that are more meaningful and needs immediate attention rather than which outfit would make me look cool enough to book the job or whether a casting director liked me or not. I’d made a shift from vibrating in a lower frequency to a higher frequency. And not too long after that my career took a positive turn! I had made my successful debut at the New York fashion week walking for talented designers like Prabal Gurung, Phillip Lim, Diane Von Furstenberg and Vivienne Westwood Gold Label in Paris fashion week which followed with great advertising campaigns. I wont lie, I was very happy and grateful to finally, have a win but at the same time it wasn’t my ultimate goal! After going through so much in life I knew my biggest goal in life was to be happy.

Today I’m eternally grateful to the darkest times. I finally know what I want from life. So what does success really mean to you? We live in a society that has taken the initiative to define everything that means or could possibly mean something to us! It has painted a picture of what success looks like and what failure looks like. What’s beautiful, or what’s ugly. What is acceptable and what is unacceptable. Do you really think the society knows the kind of person you are to define what makes you happy? I laugh at how ridiculous the society can get sometimes. So sit down and have a chat with yourself, get to know the real you, behind all the social conditionings! I can swear, that you won’t all, want that big house or the luxurious car or the diamond jewelries. Do yourself a favor and listen to that little voice coming from inside you while making decisions! That little voice is called intuition. It is an inner guidance system and everyone has it. And the more you trust it and follow its guidance, the stronger it gets! I followed my intuitions and I have since, been much happier and relaxed in life. Be in tune with your inner self because it’ll guide you through life!

So go on, find your happiness. Peel the Orange.

Much Love
Varsha

Was Shirish Kunder’s Short-Film KRITI Copied From Aneel Neupane’s BOB?

0

The online world is currently blowing up right now after Nepali director Aneel Neupane penned a letter on his Facebook wall about his short-film BOB which is freakishly similar to Shirish Kunder’s KRITI. The director writes “I’m angry not because Mr. Shirish Kunder practically stole the plot and made it into his film. I’m angry because We didn’t even have lunch money while shooting BOB, and a spot boy for Kriti probably made more money than BOB’s entire budget. My team and I didn’t work our asses off just so some rich dude from India could turn it into this and get away with it. That’s just not fair.”

Shirish-Kunder-Kriti-Nepali-Copy

Indian director Shirish Kunder has taken to Twitter just recently to share “To those comparing with some short film released on May 12, 2016: was shot in February, 2016. Hope this settles the matter”. In a second tweet Kunder added “About their claims of a private Vimeo link shared with close friends on October 2015: I’m not even their friend. Let alone close friend”.

One can be inspired and respectfully credit the inspiration but to lift another’s idea and credit as their own is disrespectful and really puts their art and creativity to question. It’s not nice to see Nepali filmmakers copy Bollywood and Hollywood, likewise it’s not nice to see how Shirish Kunder has literally lifted the story of Aneel Neupane’s BOB.

Watch Aneel Neupane’s BOB here:

Watch Shirish Kunder’s KRITI here:

You can read the full statement by Aneel Neupane here:

“My name is Aneel Neupane and I’m a filmmaker.
My team at Jazz Productions and I worked super hard to make our latest release BOB. We gave our blood and sweat to this project. We had a super hard time finding anyone to fund this project, so we pleaded our friend Tejaswee Rajthala (Jazz Productions Australia) to invest and he did. But We were constrained by the budget limitation of NRS. 50,000 (32,000 Indian Rupees). It was not a lot to go on with, but I’m personally super grateful to the whole cast and crew for believing in the story, volunteering and making it possible to create this film in that limited budget.

We had the film ready in October 2015. I had uploaded it on Vimeo as a private video to share it with close friends. You can see here (https://vimeo.com/145062291) that the video is 7 months old. We finally released it on youtube on May 12, 2016. As of right now, there are 3033 views. Although that’s not a lot of views, I have been getting a lot of messages and amazing feedback from so many people! Thank you all for appreciating BOB. Your response made me feel like all the effort and sleepless nights were worth it.

However! (Plot twist here)
Yesterday (June 23, 2016), I woke up to find Kriti (http://bit.ly/28RiRXB) on youtube. Initially, I thought maybe the first few frames, the setting and characters resembled BOB. I thought it was just a co-incidence. I was actually excited to watch a short film starring Mr. Manoj Bajpayee (A great actor whom I admire a lot!) and Neha sharma (whom I’ve had a HUGE crush on ever since I saw her in the movie Crook). As the movie progressed, I was shocked to find so much similarities.

Now, I have no idea how to go about on this. I’m angry not because Mr.Shirish Kunder practically stole the plot and made it into his film. I’m angry because We didn’t even have lunch money while shooting BOB, and a spot boy for Kriti probably made more money than BOB’s entire budget. My team and I didn’t work our asses off just so some rich dude from India could turn it into this and get away with it. That’s just not fair.

On the plus side: In today’s Movie Industry, so many Nepali films are being made that are “inspired” from Bollywood. It feels like most Nepali Filmmakers just sit and watch of a couple Bollywood movies and mix the plot together to make one crappy Nepali film. And my film was able to inspire A-Class Bollywood actors and filmmakers. I think that’s a win for Nepal. It’s nice to know that a smalltime rookie filmmaker from Nepal was able to inspire Big Time director and actors in Bollywood.

Now, honestly, I’m clueless as to what I have to do next. If I take the fight to them, I don’t think I’m equipped financially or otherwise. It would just be a tiny voice screaming from far away for them. And a lot of people told me that they will just get away with it as they have by ripping off of numerous other films from all over the world.

It would be nice if you guys would help report the video on youtube. 🙂

Thanks!”

Catch Up With Samriddhi Rai’s SAMMY ADVENTURES Here!

0

I’ve just managed to catch up with SAMMY ADVENTURES and all I can say is, she has been having tonnes of fun. The past few episodes of Sammy Adventures has travelled to Bandipur, Bhotekoshi and the most recent to Pokhara! From rock-climbing, rafting, caving, bungee-jumping to zip-lining, Miss Rai is doing it all!

I love Bandipur and it was certainly a pleasure to see the beautiful Bandipur Bazaar on Sammy Adventures. Likewise, The Last Resort and Pokhara episodes are incredible! Pokhara is a destination with so much to do! You just need a thick wallet of course 😉

Let me know what you would like to do the most?

I haven’t done the water-balling out of all of these activities and I hope to do that some-time soon. Looks like light fun.

Throwback Thursday – Timilai Bhetne By Nabin K Bhattarai

0

On today’s Throwback Thursday post, we have the classic bop which defines the early 2000’s Nepali pop Timi Lai Bhetne by Nabin K. Bhattarai. I remember hearing the song when I went on holiday to Nepal back in 2003 and thought it was so catchy! That rap is also everything! It’s so amusing.

Nabin Bhattarai has so many hits, senti-hits such as Sayad Timi Nai Hau, Sanjha Pakha and Timi Ho Lakhau. It was certainly a change to hear a more upbeat song like Timilai Bhetne from Nabin K. Bhattarai.

Enjoy this throwback music.

Ever Wondered What Life in Taplejung Is Like?

1

If you’ve ever wondered what life is like beyond the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu then a show you need to subscribe on YouTube is BBC Sajha Sawal! The debate program raises different issues and takes place all over Nepal. On a recent episode, the Sajha Sawal team travelled to Taplejung to showcase what life is like in the district.

The episode features politician Bhupendra Thebe, journalist Narayan Wagle and poet Nibha Shah and has been presented by Bidhya Chapagain. If your family/heritage is from Taplejung or you take a keen interest in the place then you will learn a lot about how people live there, what they do for a living, the challenges they are facing and the good that has happened recently.

My parents come from the village of Sinam and Sablakhu in Taplejung but it was only in 2014 that I visited the district HQ Fungling Bazar. I thought the roads to Fungling were pretty incredible and the location of Suketar airport was another highlight, however the issue with power was a major disappointment. I remember that where my cousin was renting his room, he only received 1-2 hours of power in a day. The amusing thing was, at gau in Sablakhu where most households now have one or even two solar panels; they are able to charge their phones throughout the day and many homes even have televisions. These points have been raised and communicated in the video as well.

I definitely believe that regular flights to and from Suketar, managing the power issue of the district and promoting Kanchengjunga Trekking Route and the Pathibhara Pilgrimage would do wonders for (I believe they already are, especially the Pathibhara tours) Fungling Bazaar and consequently, Taplejung District would thrive on a different level.

PS. I was watching Sajha Sawal after long! Do recommend me any episodes you think makes an amazing watch.

Actor KARMA Turns Singer With Ghintang Ghisi Twak!

0

We’ve had many examples of actors trying out singing, from Hollywood to Bollywood and even Priyanka Karki and Namrata Shrestha have turned singers at some point. KARMA is the latest actor to give voice to his upcoming film LUKAMARI in the very upbeat fast-paced song GHINTANG GHISI TWAK! The actor shares the song with Dharmendra Sewan and Bikash Silwal.

I think his voice really suits the song! Maybe we might hear more of Karma in the near future? Who knows! Fans can only hope!

If you fancy catching LUKAMARI in the cinemas then June 24 is the date to save.

Nepal Reacts To Anmol KC’s Acting (VIDEO)

9

You know how when it was really cool to just ridicule Justin Bieber and then 2015 happened when he released Where are you now, What do you mean, Sorry and Love Yourself and everyone starting jumping on his (dick) hype. I feel like it’s the same with Anmol KC right now – he’s at the stage where a lot of people seem to be making fun of him a little too much. It’s like, some people haven’t even seen his movies but I guess it’s fun to make fun of people? Then again, he’s a star (quite a big one too) so everyone is also entitled to their opinion no matter how negative they may be.

I feel for the actor. There’s such huge pressure on him to do amazing and he is only four films in. Some people almost blame him for his films being successful and for the lack of success in other films with “good actors”. If he can (with whatever) pull the crowd then that’s great; maybe his fans and some people want to watch and enjoy the cheesy rom-coms, cheesy love story. Minus DREAMS, I have seen Hostel, Jerryy and Gajalu and I do think he’s making progress (it might be small). Fair enough he’s an okay actor and not the best but the amount of mockery he has received is a bit too much don’t you think? Then again, we’ve repeatedly witnessed public figures/personalities being mocked online so I guess that’s nothing new and these personalities probably have a skin thicker than a rhino by now.

The other point is… there are many other actors like Anmol who in their beginning did a lot of SO and SO films and their acting was also very SO and SO. Let’s not name names here but even some of the other actors took their time to find their common ground and hone their acting skills. That’s all. I hope there will be that moment in the near future when Anmol KC does deliver something different and noteworthy which could help redefine him for the many out there; his Justin Bieber 2015 moment.

On that note, here’s the latest episode of Nepal Reacts! I am loving the editing here by these guys.

Anmol KC Gets Paid Big For Upcoming Film KRI!

2
Photo: Binod Pokharel

One of the hottest heartthrob of Nepali cinema, ANMOL KC is grabbing headlines back to back this week! The actor reportedly became the highest paid actor after signing for the film KRI for Nrs 20 Lakhs! The upcoming film will see Anmol KC as an action-hero, a slight change in direction from his characters in Hostel, Jerryy, Dreams and Gajalu! Hopefully we see something new! Many have criticized the actor for choosing to do similar character in his films till date. The actor will not be seen in films for quite some time due to KRI which is scheduled to go in production from February/March 2017.

Bhuwan KC looks SO happy! Lol

President Bidya Devi Bhandari On Forbes Most Powerful Women List

1

The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list by Forbes magazine has the Nepali president Bidya Devi Bhandari at number 52! The most powerful woman according to Forbes is the chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel followed by American politician and presidential candidate of the US Hillary Clinton.

Bidya Devi Bhandari is the first Nepali woman president. She created headlines globally and sparked a huge discussion during the time back in October 2015. The description by Forbes mentions of her close rapport and possible influence over the current prime minister KP Sharma Oli.

Bidya-Devi-Bhandari-Forbes-Power-Women-2016-List

What Forbes says “Bidya Devi Bhandari became Nepal’s first woman president in October 2015. Although the role is considered to be ceremonial, Bhandari, a longtime politician, has the ear of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, and therefore could potentially have greater influence in national policies and decision-making. The April 2015 earthquake in Nepal not only claimed lives but also destroyed infrastructure, and there is much work ahead to rebuild. But efforts to do so have practically come to a standstill amidst resistance from Madhesi and other ethnic groups, who are angered by a new constitution they say limits their rights. Amidst these tensions, in May Bhandari cancelled what was to be her first trip to India. A women’s rights advocate, she has made progress on at least one front: helping to push forward a mandate, now approved, that women comprise at least a third of Nepal’s parliament.”

Also on the list is the First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama (13) and the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine Anna Wintour (28).

PHOTOS: MaskMandu Campaign By Campaign For Clean Air Rights

0
P/C: Khashing Rai

Kathmandu at times can be called Dustmandu. From the many things out of control in the capital city, air pollution is one that affects all. The World Health Organization 2016 Air Quality Report mentioned Kathmandu as one of the most polluted cities in the world which comes as no surprise. Activists behind the “Campaign for Clean Air Rights” (C-CAR) have been campaigning to the government to formulate a comprehensive clean air action plan to address air pollution, install air pollution monitoring stations in key locations, strictly implement the existing vehicle emission standards and mobilise pollution tax towards mitigation activities.

On Sunday, 5th of June, over 200 gathered in front of the Rastriya Sabha Griha (National City Hall) in Kathmandu demanding the Government of Nepal to take urgent action to address the deteriorating air quality in cities of Nepal such as Kathmandu. The #MaskMandu campaign aimed to highlight the need for greater government action through its message – Kathmandu’s air quality has become so toxic that masks alone cannot protect the people of Kathmandu. The #MaskMandu campaign started with a flash mob and everybody later joined the dancers to symbolically lay dead to demand immediate action by the government to improve air quality and ensure the constitutional right to live in a healthy and clean environment as stated in Article 30 in the Constitution of Nepal 2072. (Full photos from the C-CAR Facebook page)

You can sign the online petition here!

An important campaign to back and support! It’s a shame that we all talk about it and complain about it but somehow somewhere, there’s a disconnection between complaining and doing something about it. Maybe those that have the ability to do something should be encouraged to walk to work for few days and then… just maybe… something would be done?

I personally found the film very enjoyable and must say that Menuka Pradhan and Salon Basnet have done a stellar job. After seeing Shristi’s incredible performance in HAMLET, I am very happy to see her work in GAJALU as a shy timid former Kumari. She does her character very well and is at ease on-screen. I would love for her to do roles like Ophelia from HAMLET in Nepali films in the future too because that was spectacular.

Shristi and Rohit thanked the audience for attending the screening before the start of the film. In a brief interaction with Sarala Thapa, Shristi spoke about GAJALU and took on questions from fans and well-wishers. The former Miss Nepal shared that she was wearing Astik Sherchan.

YouTube Star Aayush Rimal in Kathmandu, 2016

YouTube star Aayush Rimal is back in Nepal after two years! The US based Nepali YouTuber is a favourite among young Nepalese across the globe. His comedy videos and vlogs have given him a strong subscriber base of more than 41,000 and a growing fan base on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and SnapChat! You name it, he’s there and killin’ it!

The YouTube star who is in Nepal for two months hopes to visit Mustang during his time in the country. Let’s hope the Monsoon season doesn’t stop Aayush from reaching Mustang! Even if that doesn’t go ahead, Aayush hopes to keep himself busy doing zip-lining, paragliding and you know, all those things that we often share on social media under the hashtag #VisitNepal. (Fans in Pokhara, watch out… looks like Aayush will be about)

For fans and followers of Aayush, you’ll be excited to know that he has plans to create videos with various celebrities including Nischal Basnet, Swastima Khadka, Barsha Raut and Amrit Dhungana! Now that sounds exciting too!

When I quizzed him about fans and followers wishing to bump into him at some point in Nepal, Aayush sounded upbeat and enthusiastic at the prospect of meeting his supporters and fans! He also mentioned bumping into some during his long journey to Nepal, at the Kathmandu Airport and in Basantapur! Ainch!

Sounds like this summer is indeed going to be a memorable one for this YouTube star! To have popularity online is one thing and now he’ll be experiencing his popularity ‘offline’ in a much larger scale. Hope many of you get to take a selfie with Aayush!

Have an incredible time Mr!

Himalaya Airlines First Kathmandu-Doha Flight

Photo: Himalaya Airlines (Facebook)

Himalaya Airlines finally kick-started its first scheduled flight from Kathmandu to Doha on 31st of May with 158 passengers on board. The airline took off around 11PM in the evening. The airline is currently scheduled to operate the KTM – DOHA – KTM route three times a week till June 15 followed by a daily service to Doha.

What an exciting time for the airline! And yes! Finally! Eagerly waiting to see what other destinations the airline will connect Kathmandu to.

I can’t seem to find a website of the airline. I really hope they create an official website soon as just having a Facebook page isn’t quite enough. Hopefully, customers will be able to purchase tickets online and see Himalaya Airlines on skyscanner and various other flight apps and websites.
