The long-awaited 2ND screening of LOOT in UK officially wrapped up yesterday in London at the Clapham Grand. As a promoter I would like to extend my thank you to everyone who came to watch LOOT and on behalf of the organiser ‘The Signaturee’ we would like to apologise for any inconvenience with the seatings. Feedback received have been taken into consideration by the organisers. Nonetheless, the organisers and I am very grateful that the spirit of the movie made the event worthwhile and for me, it was very nice to chat to the many attendees.

We had several popular faces including beauty queens to new actor Varun Sjb Rana attending the premiere. The full batch of photos can be viewed on the link here. Enjoy the selection here.

Govnt To Fund Prachanda’s Sons Everest Expedition

6

Now hoping to scale the Everest in an adventure of a lifetime is Prachanda’s son Prakash Dahal alongside a 11-member team consisting of several figures from the maoist group and even Prachanda’s former personal security guard on the 29th of March. Well I guess one has to take caution if in-case a yeti strikes! Jokes apart the serious matter here is why the Government has decided to provide Nrs 20 Million for the team.

This is a joke for much of the Nepali citizens, thank goodness our finance minister Ram Sharan Mahat feels the same way, he describes this decision as ”looting state coffers” and further argues by saying should the government provide such amount of money to every expeditions being carried out by Nepali teams?

The expedition is named Lumbini – Sagarmatha Peace Mission and I guess, it’s done as part of promotions for Visit Lumbini Year 2012. Hmm so fellow readers and passer-bys, if you could ask the government or the PM to better something in your chowk or community what would it be? How could this Nrs 20 Million be utilised better?

UPDATE: The Lumbini – Sagarmatha Peace Mission 2012 will not accept Nrs 20 Million funding from the Government following a wide-scale backlash. This was announced in a press meet organised on Sunday afternoon in Kathmandu. Good thing is that the mission will still go ahead! One of the points which a speaker makes at the conference was, why is no one bothered about what other political leaders sons and daughters are doing and why is there so much bias on Prakash Dahal.

Chapali Height WOWS Producers!

3

The latest Nepali release that’s set people running to the cinemas has turned out to be CHAPALI HEIGHT. From the trailer, I don’t think one expected Chapali Height to create such an impact but then again, who can question the power of sex. And Chapali Height has shown just that as it’s successfully managed to ignore much of the mixed to very negative reviews that’s making the rounds and sell – alcohol/nudity/sex to the hundreds of youths that made their way to the cinemas on Friday and Saturday.

In just two days the film has covered it’s cost as it grossed approximately Nrs 70 Lakh rupees. This figure is no joke! The low-budget movie made at a modest cost of Nrs 27 lakhs does not star any big names but has successfully catapulted Beenita Baral, Amir Gautam and Raj Ghimire into Nepali cinema. So why has Chapali Height worked so well? One answer that the actress gives is ‘entertainment, entertainment, entertainment’ in a true Dirrty Picture manner.

Now whether Chapali Height will continue it’s rise at the cinemas beyond the weekend is something that’s on everyones mind. However, the actors and producers can be happy that the movie is already somewhat of a blockbuster – breaking opening day records (surpasses opening collection for LOOT), replacing LOOT in Pokhara, highest opening till date in Pokhara (3 Lakhs 20 Thousand).

I guess the photoshop controvery that surrounded Beenita Baral must’ve surely done the trick to add mileage to the movie. But guys’ aside from business talk  = how was the movie? I have had people commenting saying ”I would like a refund from the director, including the price I paid for the popcorn and drinks”. AMUSING.

Below is a short excerpt from the movie review by The Himalayan Times

The major fault lies in the storyline that doesn’t make any sense. Another blunder is poor characterisation — you don’t understand the characters well. You are confused most of the time the movie is running. Bini’s character has been portrayed as someone cheap. The movie is predictable except for the climax.
The story revolves around the three characters — Raj, Amir and Bini and the actors, new faces on the scene, have not showed great acting skills. They lack energy and tend to look artificial. Nevertheless, they are bold enough to kiss and get on with the lovemaking scenes.
So, the only exciting bits of the movie are the bold and steamy scenes which have been used to stretch the movie to the fullest. But frankly, these scenes are not really needed.

Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre

4

We’ve all seen streets dogs in Kathmandu or otherwise known as bhushya kukur. But have we ever thought of these dogs beyond the disease spreading, ugly and unhygienic animals that roam the streets? It is not their fault that many of them have been abandoned by enthusiastic owners that first took the responsibility to care for them and act as human parents. It is not their fault that they’re left homeless once they hit that age and can’t run around the compounds of a house acting as a ‘human paley’ or that an unexpected disease catches them. Do we scold a human who’s infected with a disease and kick him or her out? The harsh, possibly do. But that’s not a practice that one should follow.

Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre, are trying their best to help end cruelty to animals but like all charities and organisations, they can only do so much… It has to start from you readers. With over 22,000 stray dogs in the city there has to be a reason why they are there. Remember, not all of them were born on the streets, many will have been made homeless by owners. These dogs are seen as problems due to more than 200 people dying each year of rabies and 16,000 having to be treated for dog bites each year. The only solution by the government has been the inhumane act of poisoning the dogs. Over thousands of dogs have been killed using this method and the worst part is, the dogs are having to suffer till their last breath as the poison usually throws them into violent seizures that could last very well up to nine hours. Moreover, the decomposed carcasses are dumped onto riversides which inevitably only increases water and smell pollution.

KAT Centre’s solution is simple and affordable. Most importantly, it does not involve the poisoning of dogs. To vaccinate a dog costs just £1 ($2 or Nrs 150), as they become disease free this will save them from being poisoned and left to die on the riverside. Since the KAT centre opened in 2004, they have already sterilized over 12,000 street dogs. The more astounding fact is that 4000 of the dogs that were injured or sick have been rescued by the centre and kept in their rehabilitation centre or alternatively found second homes. Now £1 or $2 USD is not much, you can help make the Rabies Vaccination program in the valley a success with a touch of a button – click here. Also, its not only about how much you can give financially but how much time you can offer, if you live within the valley or are planning to visit Nepal soon then why not volunteer for a week or so.

National Games – Photo Feature

0

I was just whizzing through Republica – The Week when I came across this coverage of the recent National Games that happened in Nepal. It’s very encouraging to see this, totally encourages the athletes and those watching – to take part in sports and further ones skills. The games were held for the first time in the Far-Western region; Dhanghadi, Mahendranagar and Tikapur. To see that even such remote places can pull of such events is remarkable. Hopefully in the future more events and opportunities are paved for such far regions of the East and West.

Photos have been beautifully captured by BIJAY GAJMER. He has really brought the players emotions and passion to life with his photos. A visual treat for the many who haven’t had a glimpse of the games. You can see all the photos here.

To find out the highs and lows of the National games and who claimed victory, read the write up by Nabin Khatiwada – here.

Suraj Singh Thakuri on Folio!

3

Here’s a someone who you don’t see Facebooking and Tweeting!

SURAJ SINGH THAKURI is gracing the cover of FOLIO magazine this month. He’s undoubtedly one of the most recognised face from television to the larger than life hoarding boards often seen dotted around Kathmandu. I don’t know if Call Kantipur still airs on Kantipur TV but I admired the way he carried the show and how he was a delight to watch, everyday!

Nepali Mag Folio seems to be consistent with their covers and applauds for their color scheme used. Looks elegant and thank god, no tackiness in sight. However, I think it would’ve been better to have ‘SURAJ SINGH THAKURI’ in the yellow writing as the feature to support the cover instead of the ‘Personality of the Month’ being highlighted. Just thought that would go better. The issue focuses on Radio Jockeys! Hitting stands soon, grab a copy!

Miss Nepal Malina Joshi in Bardia

2

So our Miss Nepal 2011 Malina Joshi has been carrying out her duties pretty well. Malina stood tall alongside 2000 other youths from all over Nepal for the Community Based Anti-Poaching Unit Rally recently in Bardia. As a WWF Goodwill ambassador it is Malina’s duty to take part and raise awareness on such critical issues surrounding the conservation of endangered animals in Nepal. During her trip to Bardia, the Miss Nepal also got her hands dusty as she planted several trees for the community. ”I planted some trees… did you?? Please do as much as possible” she wrote on her official facebook page encouraging fans to do same!

Back in Kathmandu, the Miss Nepal was spotted alongside Nepali cinemas’ Reecha Sharma at Nepal Televisions show PAHICHAAN where the beauties were seen with HR Regional Coordinator of Blue Diamond Society – Bhumika Shrestha during their visit (BDS). Malina shares that she was proud to see the individuals proud of who they were and a lesson taught was to accept your identity.

Suma at Women in the World 2012

7

16 Year old Suma Tharu recently took part by singing a song that spoke of her struggle as a Kamlari at the Women in the World summit to mark the International Women’s Day in New York city. Inspiring figures to activists such as Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton and Meryl Streep made up of the audience at the Lincoln Center. Though the selling of daughters into indentured servitude is outlawed in Nepal, it is still common in poor, rural areas for families who desperately need the income. Suma suffered the same fate that thousands of other young girls are facing in Nepal, however thanks to Room to Read, Suma was rescued and now lives with her family and has access to education.

Suma shares her story through this powerful song and talks to ABC News’ JUJU CHANG on how life is after being rescued and what she hopes to do in the future.

Rhino Wars – National Geographic

3
Game scouts found this black rhino bull wandering Zimbabwe’s Savé Valley Conservancy after poachers shot it several times and hacked off both its horns. Veterinarians had to euthanize the animal because its shattered shoulder couldn’t support its weight. In the past six years poachers have killed more than a thousand African rhinos for their horns, which are smuggled to Asia for use in traditional medicines. Photo: Brent Stirton
In a café in Vietnam, a woman grinds a piece of rhino horn. By adding a little water and rubbing the horn over the dish’s sandpaper-like bottom, she creates a solution that many Asians believe is a super-vitamin and a cure for various maladies. Few scientific studies have been conducted on rhino horn’s medicinal benefits, and the results have been inconclusive. Since taking it, she says, “I don’t feel my kidney stones.” Photo: Brent Stirton
A decomposing rhino with its horns cut off lies where it was strangled in a poacher’s wire snare on a private game reserve not far from Kruger National Park in South Africa. Rangers staked out the site, but when the poacher didn’t return, reserve officials removed the horns. Photo: Brent Stirton
A white rhino cow (at left) grazes with a bull that has become her companion after a poaching attack in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Using a helicopter, a gang tracked her and her four-week-old calf, shot her with a tranquilizer dart, and cut off her horns with a chain saw. Rangers found her a week later, searching for her calf, which had died, probably of starvation and dehydration. Photo: Brent Stirton
Blindfolded and tranquilized, a black rhino is airlifted in a ten-minute helicopter ride from South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province to a waiting truck that will deliver it to a new home some 900 miles away. Designed to extricate the animals gently from difficult terrain, the airlifts are part of an effort to relocate endangered black rhinos to areas better suited to increasing their numbers as well as their range. Dehorned to deter poachers, a tame northern white rhino, one of only seven of the subspecies known to survive, grazes under the watch of rangers from Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Transferred along with three other northern whites from a zoo in the Czech Republic, the rhinos, which had not produced offspring in captivity, were brought to the wild in a last-ditch effort to breed them back from the brink of extinction. ”Human beings are so ungrateful: we deplete natural resources, destroy nature, and are close to making the world itself unlivable – all for our personal gain. Behind our actions lies the delusion that we are the owners of the world and have no responsibilities towards the creatures and plants that share it with us” – Gratitude [book]

The photos are not of rhinos from NEPAL, however Nepal has in the past few years seen an increase in the poaching of the endagered one-horned rhino existing in the country.

An eight-pound rhino horn like this one can reap up to $360,000 on the black market. Photo: Brent Stirton

First Screening of LOOT in UK

0

I had been waiting for this day to come.

Even before the confirmation between 3D Events and The Signaturee crew, I was so eager to see this day… to see everything go ‘right’. LOOT; this is a movie that I encouraged all to see through my medium; blog/facebook/twitter. I think some are even sick of the LOOT updates. Saddest thing was, I hadn’t even seen the movie yet I was being so hardcore on uplifting the movie. Besides seeing few hundred encouraging posts and views from Facebook friends and in social networking sites; I knew there was no harm promoting the movie further.

Low behold, Saturday 10th of March finally arrived and I was excited! Wait, I was LEXCITED! Ah, Better! For the first three screenings of LOOT in the UK, my responsibility is to promote/publicise and attend the screenings where technically I am to interact with the audience before the movie and after. It was quite a challenge to get people talking in front of the camera, I myself ran out of questions after the repeated – kata bata aunu bhayo? ke soch liyera aipugnu bhayeko cha?… I kept wondering when all these people would go inside so we can start the movie. If it had not been for my personal eagerness to watch LOOT, I probably wouldn’t have pushed for the screenings to take place. I had to rush out before the movie ended. I missed few minutes. But what I can say is, I am glad I promoted LOOT endlessly, its a movie that should not be missed.

What do I say; this is not going to be a review. I’ve watched many Nepali films, from the traditional ones that are heavily focused on rich/poor love story with a obvious moral narrated tediously in the end to the slightly better digital movies that have grasped good camerawork, music, background score but the stories are often left too plain and easily forgettable or too complex that it became jpt… What LOOT managed is what the majority of the ‘better made’ batch of Nepali movies didn’t. From the start to the end, we were fixed onto our seats wondering how this ‘heist’ was actually going to take place, that simple story alone was not enough though. The fine performances by all the cast and very entertaining dialogues kept the theatre erupting with laughter every few minutes. At times I thought, oh noo aba cliche line bhancha hola, but no’ they kept hitting us with more realistic lines which we would say in reality! That worked! The real’ness. It could be argued that LOOT does not really cater to the 40+ market, this was further echoed by an uncle who came out of the theatre and said “this movie was good for a 16 year old and I’m not a 16 year old”. On questioning him further, he said he wanted the typical Nepali film ending with a ‘moral scene’ in the end where the audience is taugh whats good and whats bad…

Does that show you where we are here?
Audiences that are poles apart in what they want to see. Whilst movies such as LOOT will and has looted the hearts of millions of youths and young adults, we still need to understand and acknowledge that the greater majority of the films made in the Nepali film industry are still the ones that end with a final family/villain fight scene in the hills of Chobhar. LOOT was definitely the best Nepali film I’ve watched for a long time. If the film could’ve been made a little bit shorter, then it would’ve been fantastic. Nonetheless, I am glad the movie worked for so many viewers.

Hats off to the LOOT team and Nepali Cinema.

18 Year Old Boy Gang-Raped!!

10

This is just WRONG.

An 18 year old boy was gang-raped by four youths in his own house on Thursday evening. This misfortunate incident took place in Amlekhgunj, Bara at the boys own home when no one else was present. It is believed that a known person from the surrounding community was involved in the act which left the 18 year old unconscious.

It’s been reported that he tried taking his own life on Friday evening. The police have arrested six youths based on the complaint which the victim made. Those that have been arrested:

SURESH PATHAK 20
PRADIP BOHORA 20
SAJAN THAPA 20
SAMI LAMA 21
YAM BAHADUR RANA THAKURI 19

Just wrong. Punishment by the police need to be tougher and it shouldn’t be so easy for the culprits to go on bail. Urghhh, I am confident that those involved in the act will probably show few thousand rupees and walk freely. Shucks!

VANITY STYLE – Fashion Magazine!

4

It’s very encouraging to see Nepal Kathmandu progressing on such different fields…

However, I’ve echoed this many times before and shall make it a point to state it here as well. It’s a shame that much of the existing businesses/media publication etc cannot venture beyond the Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar circuit. The only Nepali company that can be seen from East to West of Nepal is NCELL. And even that can be argued; NCELL is part of the TeliaSonera group. Coming to the point, it would be nice to see such upcoming magazines trying to venture outside than just being centralised in Kathmandu. True, the reader base might not exist beyond the metropolitan areas (the few) of Nepal but they can least show us what ‘style or lifestyle’ is for people beyond Kathmandu… what ‘love’ and ‘expressions’ of love is for people in Pahad… in Terai… etc. Do you kinda get what I mean? Now you flick through the one of many lifestyle magazines in Nepal and they’re all too similar, there simply is no reason for you to shell out your Nrs 50 etc.

Moving along, here is an upcoming all out fashion magazine that will hopefully get all tongues wagging soon! It’s called Vanity Style. I see what they did there (*VANITY FAIR*). Just teasing. The mag aims to cover style from streets to the runway! Going back to the above paragraph, I hope the ‘street style’ won’t only feature the all too familiar Durbar Marg and Thamel but beyond such as the streets of Birgunj/Dharan etceteraaa, the showcase of how women wear their colours, how men dress up. Fashion is not always about creating a statement. Then again, who am I to talk here. We shall leave that to those who claim they know what fashion is.

Here’s a few stills from the behind-the-scenes of the mag! Featuring the actress/model who seems to be widely featured currently in Nepal Kathmandu; Priyanka Karky!!

Fashion/Style/Haute Couture is slowly but definitely picking up in Kathmandu. Quite impressive for a city that does not have a thriving fashion industry. Officially joining the clique is designer Nuzhat Qazi with the launch of ‘HOUSE OF FASHION’ earlier this week on the 3rd of March in Lazimpat. The launch had Kathmandu’s popular models showcasing the designs as well as former Miss Nepal Sadichha Shrestha and the hero of the moment, Saugat Malla. The crowd comprised of friends of House of Fashion to the who’s who of Nepali showbiz industry 😉

Nattu, Suzeeta Gurung, Priyanka Karki, Meena Kayastha (L-R)

Qazi states that House of Fashion is more of a mixture between art and fashion which aims to provide platform for those needing exposure. Visiting ‘House of Fashion’ itself maybe a visual treat for many! It is an oasis where one can view clothes, observe the paintings that decorate the walls of the showroom and admire the sculptures by Meena Kayastha. And all of these are available to buy! If you are wondering what type of clothes you can expect, well any type. From high-end gowns, casual dresses, semi-casuals for men and formal attires; all are available!

Kathmandu… well atleast some parts of it seems to be rapidly getting ahead of the game. What do you guys make of it? Should more be done ‘outside’ of Kathmandu?

Nepal V Maldives – AFC Challenge Cup

0

Though Nepal got off to a disappointing start at the AFC Challenge Cup on Thursday by losing out to Palestine 2-0 at the Dasharath Stadium our team is ready to take on Maldives later today! The game will kick off at 5PM today, our team will be wearing the blue kit so lets hope you all will be wearing that colour in support. Atleast for today. AYO GORKHALI!! It’s vital for Nepal to win this game in order for the team to progress onto the semifinals.

On a side note, FIFA President Sepp Blatter who was here for the opening ceremony of the games was apparently very surprised and amazed to see the love for the game that Nepalis have shown, including Prime Minister Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai. Love it! Football is one of the many sports that unites us Nepalis.

C’mon TEAM NEPAL!

PS. Loving the song! Hearrrr nowwww or never.

Style Guru : Shail Upadhya

6

How many of you know Shail Upadhya?

Shail is quite a budding name in the fashion/art circuit. He is known for his eccentric suits and off the wall clothing. All of his suits are custom made and what he brings on the table that many cannot; hand painted clothing. Intense right! Having acted the part of a responsible son by acquiring a respectable UN job, Shail was limiting himself from doing what he truly wanted. His political work relates strongly to his family background which extends to cousins that were former Prime Ministers of Nepal, however it’s his flamboyant style and manner that’s getting a lot of attention from people everywhere he goes. Upadhya may be older than most working alongside him in the business but he is ready to follow his childhood creative pursuit.

Shail has graced countless fashion events and been featured on Forbes, New York Times to various fashion blogs. Though he’s not been in the scene recently, it can surely be expected that this youthful soul is ready to strike us with his brand soon.

Shail Upadhya channels the ’80s in a white leisure suit with day-glo shapes during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in February 2010.
Here, the diplomat salutes the avant garde with his pop art top and Mondrian slacks.
Shail is now working on his own line of hand-painted clothing inspired by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Wassily Kandinsky.

“People are very insecure as far as fashion is concerned. It’s just something they do to look good and not be criticized, so a quick answer for them is to buy for the brand. I am my own brand.” Shail Upadhya

APABAD – Upcoming Nepali Movie

4

Our Nepali Cinema is definitely at a stage of transition. 2012 will undoubtedly be the year of diverse cinema; be it love, family, drama and action, all of the genres are covered. Here is ‘APABAD’, another film to watch out for which will soon be hitting theatres near you from the 20th of April. The movie which has been directed by Subash Koirala stars two young actors who have been successful in creating a name for themselves in a short amount of time, Raj Ballav Koirala and Nisha Adhikari. Enough of the blabber, below is a short synopsis, a note from the director and few exclusive stills from APABAD.

My take, APABAD looks unlike the films that we are seeing currently in Nepali cinema. The stills and visual look feeds off a feeling that this is a film that will test the audience to think… to use our brains… whether that will be the case of the final product, I don’t know. I predict this is a movie that will take the audience on a ride through the journey played out by Raj Ballav Koirala. His rough look has got many talking, maybe we’ll see some award worthy performance. Let’s wait till the 20th April.

PS. I’m already liking the ‘Ye Dautari’ track from the movie! THUMBS UP!

SYNOPSIS

This is a story of Suyog: Young and intelligent with his own set of ideals and beliefs. His perspective towards society and perception of the people around him are very individualistic. And he lives a dream hoping one day it gets fulfilled. But the wind blows against him, he tries to get up every time, only to be forced to the ground again. His hope fades away and the wind takes him over. What he does after that, how he finds his dream and happiness… is an exception!

Apabad is a measure of patience and persistence to achieve one’s goal in life. It is a question that we have asked ourselves in many crossroads of life and how one among us dared to stand for what he believes. It’s a story of an outlaw who puts a blindfold to pragmatism and walks in self-professed path of liberation and realization.

DIRECTORS NOTE

Purpose. What is ones “purpose” on this crazy world we all call home? For some it takes their whole life to figure it out and some never do.  I had it all figured out, I love to tell the stories and entertain people. As a film making student and being passionate about films I want to create distinctive mark on every film I make.Everyone lives in a different reality that is why people enjoy watching movies. It gives insight into the worlds of others. I as a Film director strive to portray their characters’ lives as believable as possible.
APABAD is my first film as a director. I hope this will make a mark of myself as a true story teller and a film maker.

International Women’s Day – Introducing Manisha Dangol Shrestha

2

Over the course of our lifetime, we will have come across many women that may have influenced, accompanied or shaped our journey to become who we are. Without their contribution in our journey, we may not be the person we are today. Women are very important to every one of us, without them we wouldn’t be here today. As each day passes women are rapidly climbing the ladder to an equal position to a man. The future of women shows prosperity, a chance for them to live their life and not just exist among the seven billion that make up this planet.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I would like to introduce a woman who in her own right has been active in taking her community from strength to strength. Manisha Dangol Shrestha is a woman like many, who believes in work and giving not 100 but 110%. Though she may come across as shy, at work she’s the complete opposite. Manisha believes her quality to give it all has managed to land her a position in reputed Nepali organisations in the UK such as Non-Resident Nepali UK, Pasa Puchah Guthi UK and Yeti Nepali Association UK. She encourages action for the growth and to strengthen ones community. Having organised a launch event of ‘London Fashion House’ in Kathmandu already, Manisha looks forward to develop her entrepreneurial skills with the fast approaching launch of ‘London Fashion House’ soon in London.

Nabin K Bhattarai’s New Video!

0
It’s become a norm to have music videos filmed abroad by Nepali singers. Adding on to that jargon is Nabin K Bhattarai with his latest video release of ‘Timi Malai Yeti Pida Nadeu’. The video has been filmed in Australia and is off Nabin’s upcoming album aptly titled Kathmandu. His previous music video Timilai Mann Parauchu was filmed in the US and created by Planet3Films. That became widely popular!

It’s just average… the video could have been better to fit a song that’s soothing and is better than average. What do you guys think of the video?
