Buddha Air Celebrates 20 Years And Announces International Flights From Pokhara!

1
Photo: @dvyib (Twitter)

One of Nepal’s leading airlines, Buddha Air marked twenty years of service on October 11, 2017. The private airline first took to the skies with its Beechcraft 1900D aircraft offering an Everest Experience flight on October 11, 1997. Buddha Air has since gone to connect Kathmandu to over a dozen destinations across Nepal, move over 1 million passengers in 2016 and connect Kathmandu to Varanasi and Paro during different seasonal period.

Managing director Birendra Bahadur Basnet shared that the airlines fleet of nine aircraft (three ATR-42s, four ATR-72s and two Beechcrafts) will be increasing with the addition of ATR 72-500 to be delivered by mid-January 2018 followed by another aircraft in June 2018. Basnet also announced that the airline has finalized talks with Airbus to acquire AIRBUS A320 aircraft to start international operations from Pokhara International Airport. The international airport in Chinnedanda, Pokhara is expected to be completed by July 10, 2021. Buddha Air hopes to commence international flights to New Delhi, Guangzhou and Bangkok from its three Airbus A320 from the 1st of August, 2021.

The airline currently employs 865 personnel. YAY for more JOBS! EXCITING TIMES! This is major. I am sure more airlines will be announcing international operations and expanding their fleets as several airports across Nepal get upgraded and extended.

Actors Of RANI Film GUESS THE SONG – DASHAIN SPECIAL!

2

The YouTube show GUESS THE SONG by Paradygm TV recently invited the actors from the upcoming film RANI for a Dashain Special! Malina Joshi, Manish Sundar Shrestha and Saruk Tamrakar joined in the fun, guessing away the songs that have become a Dashain classic. I must say that the Dashain Tihar song by Sugam Pokharel was completely new to me! Same with Yogeshwor Amatya and Cool Pokharel’s.

Manish is surprisingly quiet in the video… actually both of the guys are. Malina is definitely the energy of the group. The trio along with Anoop Bikram Shahi star in the film RANI which will screen across Nepal from October 19. The song BHANA BHANA from RANI makes a beautiful watch. The song itself is pretty fine too!

Enjoy GUESS THE SONG and BHANA BHANA 🙂

PS. Apart from admiring Saruk’s handsome face, I noticed the t-shirt he was wearing was of my favourite instant noodles ‘Shin Cup’. A quick Google confirmed it! The t-shirt were apparently sold at UNIQLO Japan Store! I never knew Shin Cup Noodles sold t-shirts too. I’m #SHOOK. I want one now. Wai Wai should make one – but vintage style!

THROWBACK VIDEO: Nepali Guy Coming Out

0

On National Coming Out Day, Wednesday 11 October, I thought it would be fitting to repost a video of Sagar Gurung coming out and revealing his sexual orientation online. Sagar who goes by Legendary Saga on YouTube posted the coming out video on June 28, 2016. Surprisingly, the video has received a large number of positive feedback and Sagar has spoken about being overwhelmed by the support.

Sagar wrote “I’ve never done anything like this and I’m very nervous. I don’t want to live a lie anymore so I think it’s time to finally just be myself. I hope this video inspires and help someone out there.Thank You for your love and support. Thank you Synematico team for helping me out.”

Vlogger Talks About The Struggle Of Being A Girl In Nepal

0

I just watched a video, a vlog by Rija Shrestha where she speaks out on her frustration of being a girl in a Nepalese society. A dejected Rija is speaking out for over nine minutes on this vlog, purely out of her frustration that she has not been able to convince her parents to let her travel with one of the biggest reasons stopping her being that she’s a girl. If she plans to travel with boys, that’s a no-go area and if she plans to travel with girls, that’s also a no-go area. Let’s not forget that Rija is also asking for girls to come forward who are in a similar position so they can help each other and possibly form a stronger travel group.

Rija shares about working from an early age and being responsible. This conflict of identity is something that I find common in the personal space that we call home and in the professional environment. Outside the four walls and outside the watchful eyes of the family, some of us are exceptional and show great leadership traits and at times, we are more than we think but as we come back to our personal family space, many of us lose all this and merely become this human who is and will always need caring and to be looked after. Every decision we take will be questioned and we will always feel like a child no matter what accomplishments and accolades we collect. I can only encourage, girls and boys, to be more action driven and to bring their personalities from the professional environment to their home.

Every family is different and I cannot encourage others to be like myself. Whilst many may say, “you’re a boy, it’s easy for you”, I believe that my elder sisters have made everything easy for me. They’ve always led the way and they’ve made it easy for me to grow up and do my own thing because they always did their own thing and never let anyone stop them… including parents. I believe that is the reason why at times I find it very difficult to engage in baseless conversation with relatives. As a family, we do not entertain ourselves with silly conversations and to suddenly face such dialogue from relatives is simply absurd to me. I trust myself and because working from an early age has given me the freedom to be mobile (in terms of finance), I make my own decisions when it comes to travel and I simply inform my parents. That is what I have been doing since the age of sixteen and it is only when it comes to long-term travel that I inform the family beforehand.

We’ll have commitments that will tie us down growing up and I realise that for girls, there may be more that will tie them down. Some may realise no matter how old you are, your family will always try their best to ground you… it’s all down to you regarding the next action you take.

On a lighter note, please keep an eye out on SherpaShah who organises the Solo Woman Travelers. I believe those platforms and community may be a space where the likeminded can come together and you, can create networks with other women and men to travel together. Conference Of The Birds At Shilpee Theatre

Photo: Sushan Prajapati

Based on Farid ud-Din Attar’s noted literature The Conference of The Birds, the new play at Shilpee Theatre in Kathmandu has been directed by Deeya Maskey. The play which has been dramatised by Peter Brook and Jean-Claude Carrier begins as the birds gather to find their king. The Conference of Birds (Chara Haruko Sammelan) began playing at the Shilpee Theatre in Battisputali from 6th October and will continue till 18th October with daily shows at 5.15PM (except Tuesday) and a matinee show on a Saturday at 1PM. The Actors Studio has announced the play will receive a second set of dates as part of its second running from 22nd October to 28th October (for tickets: 9851223023)

Having acted in theatre and cinema in the past, Conference of the Birds is a first for Deeya in the role of a director. Slightly unfortunate that I couldn’t make time to go watch the play but it looks like it’s a concept that will entice the audience. Let me know what you make of it.

A Short Film About Suicide – World Mental Health Day 2017

0

Ramailo Zindagi, a team of IT and multimedia enthusiasts have brought out a timely video marking World Mental Health Day 2017. The fresh upload is a Short Awareness Film About Suicide that lasts just more than two minutes. With more reports of people suffering from mental illness in the present, depression and suicide is becoming a major killer. Unfortunately, depression and suicide is still not taken as seriously or with urgency as required. There are several suicide cases of well-known celebrities, in the West and in Nepal too where we are once again reminded that life may not be all that it seems for many of us. As the video says, it is SO important for us to open up, for us to think beyond ourselves. Likewise, we need to be more alert and observant with our family members and friends.

Thank you to Ramailo Zindagi for sharing this meaningful video to add more awareness on World Mental Health Day. When you approach life, one step at a time and construct that future that you wish to be part of… zindagi is indeed ramailo.

Tashi Cheozum Lama Covers BAD LIAR (Selena Gomez)

0

Tashi Cheozum Lama‘s cover of SELENA GOMEZ’s hit BAD LIAR makes for quite an alluring listen! Lama manages to mirror the style of Selena’s singing and add more vocally in certain parts. Whilst Gomez’s version at times is more a combination whisper and talking, Tashi can be heard comfortably belting some notes out. The cover is part of Vocoustic Sessions, shared by Infinity Events on YouTube! I love the original song and the video and I think this was a pretty good cover!

PRIYA ADHIKARI – Life As A Female Helicopter Pilot

Having studied Environmental Science for Bachelors and a Masters in Business Administration, Priya’s life took a drastic turn when she signed off as a Cabin Crew and took on the challenge to become a chopper pilot. The thirty-one year old helicopter pilot was invited by Safeskies in Australia to talk about her unique experience of flying and conducting rescue missions across the Himalayas. Priya spoke to ABC Australia about her experience of being a woman pilot in Nepal, detailing a high altitude rescue by adding “I remember one of the rescues we did on the west side, which was the Hidden Valley, and I was almost getting hypoxia because our oxygen was almost already done,”.

Namrata Shrestha’s Message On World Mental Health Day

0

PARVA actress Namrata Shrestha took to her social media profiles to talk about mental health! Today, Tuesday October 10 happens to be World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues. The actress wrote “Today is mental health awareness day, I would like to remember my loved ones who lost their battle against depression. You will live on in my heart! And to those of us who are suffering silently, don’t let your struggle become your identity! I know it’s tuff but please talk to someone close and seek professional help. After all it’s an illness and it can be treated! You are not alone!!!!”. Shrestha finished off the statement with the hashtag “you are not alone”.

Millions of people across the world are affected by mental illness. In the UK, one in four people are affected by mental illness with more and more being prescribed medicine. Even in Nepal, we come across news or have lost a loved one, family, friends or a distant acquaintance through their decision to take their life. Unfortunately, seeking help is even more scarce in Nepal. There is definitely a big gap in mental health treatment in Nepal. It is so important to be a friend that listens and also to share your problems. You, definitely are not alone.

The NEXT Team Return With GHIN GHIN BAJYO

0

A beautiful woman always seems to attract men in two’s and three’s. Well, that is in the world of movies and music videos. The recent music video of Ghin Ghin Bajyo by singer Samir Acharya features The NEXT Team from Australia and the viewing experience is not too far from an over-the-top Nepali or Hindi film. The dance music video revolves around Pradeep and Amit’s quest to woo a lady, who unsurprisingly is already with another man. Ghin Ghin Bajyo is typically not a song that would find itself in the listening devices of the younger Nepalese music listeners. The video itself is average and a step away from the collection of work that The Next Team have previously produced.

It might be worthwhile for The Next Team to wisely select a song before jumping into another dance choreography.

COVERED: STAY By JATAYU Team!

0

JATAYU TEAM are back with another East meets West cover and this time it’s STAY by ZEDD featuring Alessia Cara. The cover which has been produced and arranged by Niran Dangol features powerful vocals from Surakshya Malla. Malla’s vocals are complimented well and at times dwarfed by the sound of flute, sarangi and tabla. I am hearing Taylor Swift vibes from Surakshya vibes… especially during the verse parts.

Prabal Gurung Talks American Passport, Bullies And More With BBC Nepali

0

New York based fashion designer Prabal Gurung is often discussing fashion, women, representation and body image with the leading fashion magazines and websites across the world but in a rare occurrence, he recently took some time out to chat to Fadindra Dahal from BBC Nepali. Gurung candidly spoke about his decision to opt for an American citizenship which unsurprisingly generated quite a difference in opinion. Prabal spoke about the difficulties in doing business and travelling with a Nepali passport whilst being based in USA. Prabal has single-handedly done so much in spreading the name of Nepal overseas as well as bringing light to Nepal through his work and Shikshya Foundation Nepal, it’s absurd that there are people who question his identity and belonging based on his decision to opt for an American passport.

The thirty-eight year old designer spoke about the challenges of being different and going to an all-boys school during his younger years in Kathmandu. Prabal has repeatedly talked about his bond with his mother and it’s incredible how much of a loving and accepting person and mother she is; who chose to not compare Prabal with his brother and let him be the way he was. I just hope that there are many more parents with similar attributes to Prabal’s mum, who will let their children grow up to be the person they choose to be and not around a wall of comparison and ambitions that are not theirs.

The interview makes for quite an inspiring read with Prabal giving some hard-advice to aspiring fashion designers as well as talking about his career highlights, working in Nepal and his charity Shikshya Foundation Nepal.

Miruna Magar Shilpa Maskey And Jenny Sunuwar Shine In JAY AUTHOR’S On Time MV!

1
Miruna Magar, Jenny Sunuwar, Shilpa Maskey (L-R)

There we were comfortably sat inside the comforts of the air-conditioned restaurant in Mahendranagar as I steered the conversation towards Jay Author‘s latest release ON TIME. The UK based Nepalese musician had been teasing the song lately by sharing a spectacular teaser created by the Art In Motion team. Coincidentally, that was the very day of the release of the video on YouTube. As we watched ON TIME by Jay Author featuring The Redface x Don Dee, we were left speechless by the video. Even in the present day, there are so many Nepali musicians that make listeners feel uneasy with their music… and that ranges from lyrics, style to their general approach towards their craft. Jay Author, yet again seamlessly blends into the world beyond Nepali R&B and Hip-Hop. With ON TIME, he has beautifully fused elements of East, West and the Global as he finds solace in the support of musicians The Redface x Don Dee.

The ladies featured in the music video, Miruna Magar happens to be a well known Nepali personality in the UK. Magar has completed filming for Lal Purja and Laure in Nepal. The UK based upcoming Nepali actress is awaiting the release of her films whilst Shilpa Maskey is currently in Nepal tied up with her Nepali cinema debut with BREAKUP alongside Aashirman DS Joshi. The lady in green, Jenny Sunuwar is the winner of UK Dance Off 2016 who has a strong passion for dancing.

The revamped HOTEL AMBASSADOR by ACE Hotels has changed the face of Lazimpat for the better. The area which was once notoriously linked to nauseating traffic jams now boasts wide roads and plenty of establishments offering fine dining, bars to upmarket souvenir stores. The HOTEL AMBASSADOR offers all of the mentioned and it’s only a few minutes walk from the capital’s tourist hub Thamel and the shopping destination of Durbar Marg. THE DIPLOMAT at the Hotel Ambassador is quickly becoming the go-to destination for those that have a soft spot for South Asian cuisine. Located on the first floor of the towering property, The Diplomat offers seating indoors and outdoors.

Whilst the interior exudes elegance, The Diplomat is a space where you are made to feel comfortable and welcome from your very arrival. The neatly designed restaurant space feels cosy and the staff go beyond the required to ensure that The Diplomat provides unbeatable service. Priyanka And Ayushman Pair Up For MAYA GARCHHU… MV

0

Priyanka Karki and Ayushman DS Joshi, the couple who are taking social media by storm are now working together even more. They’ve previously starred in music videos together, given countless interviews and photoshoots together and just in time for Dashain, we have MAYA GARCHHU video where the real-life couple romance for the cameras. The song by Anju Panta and Ram Krishna Dhakal sees model and actor Ayushman break into some choreography! Now that is definitely the first time I’m seeing Ayushman move like that. If you’re a religious follower of Priyanka and Ayushman then you probably saw the behind the scenes clips from the filming already!

This couple is definitely taking over… they seem to be everywhere. Just waiting for a rom-com starring Priyanka and Ayushman now.

THITO ALERT – Sugam Singh

1

Better known as SUVENTEEN on Instagram, this THITO ALERT features twenty-year old Sugam Singh who is slowly being recognised for his well curated Instagram feed, style and his beautiful face. Aptly titled ‘Photography Enthusiast’, his Instagram has over 2500 followers and he has also recently signed with Stellar Inc. modelling agency. Singh, who is currently nearing the end of his gap year will soon be starting college.

GET TO KNOW SUGAM SINGH

LEX: You have a really immaculate Instagram feed, what does it take for you to create and manage that?

SUGAM: I try to find unique angles. I always want to do something which no one has done. I try my best to make my pictures standout. So for me, it’s the urge to do something different and my passion towards photography.

LEX: Social media is often known to create pressure on young people and users on a daily basis. How do you view your relationship with platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat?

SUGAM: I feel it’s not the case with me. Social media is a nice platform for sharing your work. I have got very nice responses from my followers. They say I inspire them to be creative and that encourages me to do even better. So, I can say that I have a very healthy relationship with such platforms.

LEX: What are some of the best moments you have from using Instagram?

SUGAM: Well the first thing is, I get to interact with so many like-minded people via Instagram and they all are very supportive. I even got to be a part of a small community of bloggers, vloggers, photographers and instagrammers in Nepal. I have been able to reach a very large audience with that help. It has also opened a lot of doors of opportunities for me. I landed my first modelling assignment from Instagram. These days a lot of brands are approaching me to promote their products.

LEX: How important are looks for you when it comes to finding a partner?

SUGAM: What I believe, is that when you fall in love with someone, face is one factor but there are so many other factors too. It is not absolutely necessary for a person to be good-looking to fall in love. Me, personally I get impressed by the personality rather than looks.

Finally, please complete the sentence:
  • I am most comfortable in: t-shirt and shorts
  • When I’m sad I: do calligraphy (it soothes me)
  • With friends, you can find me: in Patan or Jhamsikhel
  • Editing photos take me: 15-20 minutes
  • The last Nepali film I watched was: Chhakka Panja
  • I beat the Kathmandu heat by: drinking iced tea
  • Lexlimbu is: a good human being

Anoop Bikram Shahi Saruk Tamrakar And Manish S Shrestha Fight For Malina Joshi in RANI!

1
Anoop Bikram Shahi and Malina Joshi in RANI

The brand new trailer of the film RANI sees three of Nepal’s most eligible hunks Anoop Bikram Shahi, Saruk Tamrakar and Manish Sundar Shrestha fight for Malina Joshi’s love. The film follows the tried and tested route of a love triangle with Malina in the middle of the love interest from the three men. The movie which has been directed by Dayaram Dahal has YouTuber VJMUSIC (Vijay Ghimire) and Nikhita Thapa working on the music. The music video from the film BHANA BHANA is pretty sweet. I definitely think music is something to look forward to from the film.

The duo, Anoop and Malina are seen everyday across the various DishHome TV ads looking joyful and radiant which is in contrast to the trailer of RANI where Shahi’s role looks quite negative especially towards Malina and her two pursuits Saruk and Manish.

Rani will screen in cinemas across Nepal on October 19th. Let’s hope the film is more exciting than the trailer.

Welcome Dashain With Neetesh Jung Kunwar’s DASHAIN TIHAR Song

0
Saruk Tamrakar in DASHAIN TIHAR

It’s that time of the year again where the Kathmandu streets breathe a peaceful pace and the people enjoy the calmness that they once were used to. The Dashain air feels pleasant to say the least and with the main day of Tika being observed today, I can only imagine the amount of feasting and blessings being exchanged right now. This year, Paradygm TV have released Neetesh Jung Kunwar‘s DASHAIN TIHAR just few days ahead of the festive season. The music video brilliantly captures what the festive season means for followers across the country as well as depicting scenes of separation… unfortunately, a scene far too common as many Nepalis go abroad everyday in search of greener pastures.

Kunwar’s Dashain Tihar features Shristi Shrestha, Saruk Tamrakar, Jyotsna Yogi, Sudha Adhikari and Yojana Dhakal.

On that note, Happy Dashain and Tihar to all my readers and followers across the different social media pages. I wish you all the best during this festive period and beyond. Have fun and make great memories.

Double Above Knee Amputee HARI BUDHA MAGAR Climbs MERA PEAK

1

Former Gurkha veteran Hari Budha Magar who lost both his legs during the war in Afghanistan successfully climbed MERA PEAK with his CONQUERING DREAMS climbing team. The team reached the top at 9.02AM on 19th September, 2017. The peak which stands at a height of 6,476 meters is located in the Sagarmatha Zone. Hari’s successful climb also means that this is the first double above knee amputee to summit a peak over 6000 meters.

The Mera Peak expedition is part of Hari’s training to climb Mount Everest in the Spring of 2018. Unfortunately, the cost of climbing a mountain does not come cheap. The war veteran had to remortgage his property to support his expedition to Mera Peak. ‘Conquering Dreams Mera Peak Expedition’ was jointly supported by UK/Nepal based Himalayan Ski & Treks (led by Krishna Thapa) and USA based Myrmidon Expeditions (led by Christopher Pollak).

You can support Hari’s big mission to climb Mount Everest in 2018 by contributing here! Hats off to Hari Uncle and his team. This is a remarkable action, one which I hope will inspire and encourage everyone to be active and to follow their dream. Hari uncle has gone to show and has bigger plans, to show what he can do regardless of his situation.
