Apple definitely seems to be milking it! Since appointing Genxt (Generation Next Communications) as the official distributor in November, 2014 and starting sales of the iPhone from Dec 19 onwards, there has been sales of 2200 iPhones sold in one month! Unsurprisingly the new iPhone 6 seems to be a popular must have for many. Genxt Managing Director Pawan Kumar Bhimsaria shared with The Kathmandu Post that they had “received bookings for 4500 units of the iPhone 6 and 500 of the iPhone 4s”.
Genxt will be offering the Apple iPad from next month onwards.
Raise your hands if you’re still stuck with an iPhone 4! Woo! I think I’ll move onto something different next. Battery life kills me everyday.

This happened after 1AM this morning. Even as I read the live Tweets, I wasn’t surprised at all. What are we to expect? The country has been consistently let down by it’s leaders and the events of this morning is another reconfirmation. Nothing new there. We treat political figures like God and they walk around like they’ve earned their every right to be where they are but let us not forget such incidents for they are becoming all too common. Empty promises and empty goals.
Regardless of all this hoo-haa, I believe as individuals we have the energy and drive to get a lot done. Whatever you are, whatever you do, give it your best, think not only of yourself but your community and the people around you too. You are a bigger role model than what they will ever be.
The brand new RUPAKOT RESORT is located just 22 km away from Pokhara. The luxurious resort with an investment of Nrs 300 million offers stunning views of the Begnas and Rupa Lake! Visit the resort at the right time and you’re guaranteed to see the glorious Annapurna range right before your eyes. Pushpa Adhikari, the founding president of Non-Resident Nepali Association Belgium is the man behind Rupakot Resort. The resort was recently inaugurated by NRN President Sesh Ghale.
The cluster of building that makes up Rupakot Resort looks like a small village from a distance. Looks fancy and nice! Perfect for a get-away! I believe the price starts at Nrs 22,000+ per night (online rate).
It has been a while since the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival 2014 took place in mid-December at Kumari Cinema in Kathmandu but one person who I really need to take time out and congratulate is my dear cousin and friend Laxcha Bantawa. Laxcha who recently graduated with Film Studies from University of Cumbria, UK had submitted her short-film PAWAN to the KIMFF jury and not only was it selected but it also won Best Documentary under the Nepal Panorama Non-Fiction category. Unfortunately, she wasn’t in Kathmandu to receive the award and her prize money. After she wrapped up her Everest Base Camp trek, Bantawa shared the big news over on Instagram and Facebook. She shared “I am so honoured to announce that my film ‘PAWAN’ won the ‘Best Documentary’ category in the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival. As I mentioned in the screening last week, I only graduated a few weeks ago, so having the first show of my film in the biggest film festival in Nepal is already so overwhelming, But to actually win the Nepal Panorama Non fiction category!!!- is just beyond what I had expected Thankyou @kimff for the opportunity to share this story, so grateful, Absolute honour”.
Hopefully I’ll get around to watching PAWAN soon. Pawan captures the story of a young Nepali boy by the name of Pawan who moves from a small town in Jhapa, Eastern Nepal to Leeds, a city in Northern part of the UK.
I have wonderful memories of us creating home-videos during the times she would come over to stay at ours; making parodies and uploading it on YouTube back in 2007. The videos were raw, very point and shoot style and in a scripted way, quite natural. Gorey Gurung Parody, Korean Film Parody, Apple Revolution, Darpanchaya Parody were just some of the videos that Laxcha created. Then it was fun and games, entertainment only. Her drive to go beyond led her to direct Manas Ghale’s solo single YATRI which drew in positive response and also landed her a nomination at the British Student Film Award in London. Likewise, her editing for Lex in Nepal didn’t go unnoticed. It’s amazing to see someone who went beyond the comfortable world of internet and in the direction of that they always desired. PAWAN is a start and I hope you strive for bigger challenges in the days ahead.
Congratulations!
PS. Laxcha donated quite a chunk of her prize money to Maiti Nepal.
YouTubers Aaron and Austin are popular under their channel “The Rhodes Bros” where they make vlog’s about everything from How To Take a Selfie, Pros and Cons Of Being Twins to covering popular songs! Oh yes, Aaron and Austin are twins. Their recent video upload has clocked over 10 million views in just a few days. In the video, the twins come out to their father over the phone. The message that the twins want you to take away from this viewing is to “Be Yourself”. It’s also wonderful to hear the thoughts from the father… his children will always be his and he cannot undo being a dad. Very powerful and encouraging. Unfortunately, not all coming out stories go down well… many have been filmed in a similar manner.
It is important for individuals to feel comfortable with who they are and their preferences. That does not mean that as individuals, one has to share with the whole world but sharing about yourself – when you are okay to do so – with the people that you feel comfortable with should make the journey a whole lot easier.
Let’s talk music! To be specific, let’s talk Nepali film music! This week we have the video release of Pani Bina from Suntali, Mero Jindagi from Nai Nabhannu La 3 and the audio release of Jaalma from Resham Filili! They’re all good in their own ways – so diplomatic of me lol! I really like Pani Bina and Jaalma as the sound is very rich, lyrically it’s different and it definitely doesn’t follow the normal trend of Nepali film songs. The video for Pani Bina is a nice watch too. Bandipur, the army of characters and the subtle choreography make it a pleasant viewing. Mero Jindagi from Nai Nabhannu La 3 also has a nice video and I feel that it is sticking on the safe side by following what has worked with Nai Nabhannu La viewers in the past. That’s fine by me and I’m sure this will work very well. I was hoping to hear the young singer Prem Pariyar belting out songs for Nai Nabhannu La 3 though. Aryan Sigdel and Priyanka Karki as a pair match well and their scenes have been captured very nicely. Talking about Jaalma, the song has definitely excited many! It has received over 10,000 views on YouTube in just over 24 Hours. Wonderful start for the Resham Filili team! Let’s hope for an exciting video soon too!
The Signaturee Crew are a Nepali event company active in the UK and well known for events including NEON, Nepali New Year Party and The Show. Beyond the world of parties and dancing, the team also screened the popular film LOOT in the UK and have also hosted a talk-show and a football tournament. The team consists of five friends – Bisesh, Dipesh, Shermain, Suman and Nasib. I recently caught up with Bisesh from The Signaturee to talk about the journey so far, the highs and lows and what goes behind making The Signaturee a brand.
PS. The Signaturee Crew also sponsored Tracing Nepal 2014.
Signaturee Crew have successfully managed to establish their brand midst the Nepali community in the UK and looking back what has been your biggest highlight?
It’s a privilege and an honour at the same time being able to establish ourselves in the Nepalese community here. Looking back our biggest highlight has been THE SHOW as an event.
Organising THE SHOW brings an immense pressure to focus on details and preparation. Every year the challenge is for us to keep the quality of The Show and do our level best to take it up a notch higher. After all, the audience want a different experience than the previous and people are much more demanding and always expecting more which is a wonderful challenge.
THE SHOW 2014
Managing events that deal with hundreds to thousands of people is bound to experience various setbacks and glitches along the way, can you share one situation where you faced a lot of challenge and can you also tell the readers how you overcame the situation?
I want to be truly honest here… The shambles of the English New Years in 2012 was the lowest point of our event experience. Everything that could go wrong went wrong and I would say 90% of the customers weren’t happy, why wouldn’t they be? After all we messed their New Years Eve. It’s a blessing and a curse to have hundreds to thousands of people supporting your brand, so there was a lot to take in and this situation even tested the management within. There was a lot to make up for, both internally and externally. Just like you took the praise in those good days you take in the negative comments as well. Some comments were horrendous and offensive but our team were strong enough to not take things personally and stayed level headed and positive. We knew never to take our customers lightly and I would say this experience got us to being better.
Being positive, believing in yourself and your team is the best attitude to have and internally you have to be super strong and supportive of each other, rest will follow.
From parties, talk-show, film-screenings, fashion-shows to a football tournament – will you guys continue to do different things and can we have a clue to what more you guys will be bringing to the Nepali event-goers in the future?
Wow! We have built up quite some events here haha! Well we have this crazy idea for the near future. It’s a challenge and a risk but what fun is there when we don’t take risks? I won’t say it’s 100% confirmed but we are thinking about it and analysing whether it will be a right event to organise.
For clues… I would say it’s more outer FUN :D.
What do you rely on most when promoting/spreading the word about your events?
We rely on the force of social media. It is the most powerful tool and if used in the right way and manner it can have such a huge impact. It’s cheaper than other forms of marketing and promotion but you have to be smart about it. Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/youtube/bloggers, those are some of the platforms that we rely on to get the word out about our event.
Also another major thing that we rely on is our event experience, if we provide the best and most of our people have a good time, they will remember that and they will hopefully think about coming back to our next event.
Which event has been the most successful in monetary terms?
Nepalese New Year! Rest of the events are equally important, monetary profit is important but that’s just the result of overall work and the event.
What are the challenges you find when organizing Nepali parties?
There are a lot to be honest. First we to start with venues, we are not the favourite client for all the venues that we want to host our events since we do not have that consistent rate in organising events. We have to invest more time in building a stronger relation with new venues.
Customers are everything for our events. Since our community is still at a growing stage there is a huge responsibility on our behalf to provide a really good experience that not only match other Nepali event organisers but even the non-Nepali events. I often hear people complain about Nepali parties saying “Ugh, it’s a Nepali party… it’s going to be the same old thing, same people…â€, I partly agree with such statements but I also disagree with such a view. I have been to many parties organized by non-Nepalis and parties catered for people from different communities and I believe that Nepali club nights are on point. Of course, there is space for improvement and that will take place with time and with the introduction of new ideas but the music and the ambience that Nepali parties have to offer is at a good place right now.
As an organiser we have to remain fresh and bring in right changes for our events. That is one major challenge not only for us SIGNATUREE but for all the event organisers. So there’s a lot of opportunities ahead. It’s all about being smart, creative and consistent.
With a strong presence in the UK, does the Signaturee Crew have any plans to host events in other countries with large Nepali population or even in Nepal?
That was on the cards and we even made an attempt. However, it didn’t work out so we’ve decided to remain focused in the UK for now but who knows about the future.
And can you tell us the reason behind the name Signaturee?
Looking back at how we came upon the name, it’s very random haha. We were in Trocedaro, Picadally. We were discussing over a hundred different names but no one liked any and it was getting very frustrating at the time. We were drinking, bowling at the same time and in the final moment we came up with the name ‘Autograph’. It was somewhere there but it didn’t click with everyone, so we decided to leave it at that but I wasn’t satisfied and I forced everyone to sit for a while just to give it a final push to get the right name.
We opened the note-book again and one of the boys shouted Signaturee! Basically another word for autograph. Dipesh suggested that we put a double ‘ee’ at the end just to make it unique. That was it, we instantly felt right about the name. We later text each other ‘SIGNATUREE’ on our way home. It was all smiles after that…
The Signaturee Crew’s next event is the Nepali New Year Party on April 12 at the Ministry of Sound in London.
The Akshay Kumar starrer BABY is set to release on Friday January 23! Parts of BABY has been filmed in popular hotspots of Nepal including Thamel, Basantapur and the HYATT Hotel in Baudha. Catch a glimpse of Nepal on the trailer! I happened to be in Thamel with my friend when they were filming there; it was a chaotic experience but very fun to be midst the crowd and the madness! I’ve blogged about it and had shared some HQ images back in May!
The upcoming action thriller also stars Danny Denzongpa and Anupam Kher. Along with Nepal, BABY has been filmed in Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Delhi and Mumbai. Looks interesting!
Nepal Airlines may be popular for making unusual headlines from sacrificing a goat, mouse disrupting it’s various flights and being listed as one of the world’s “unsafe airlines” but it looks like the new year is set to be a stellar one for the airline with the delivery of its Airbus A320 (9N-AKW, Sagarmatha) aircraft just round the corner. These photos by Martin Fester captured the brand new aircraft at Hamburg, Germany. The new aircraft is expected to land in Nepal on February 7. The second Airbus A320 will follow in April! Ooo!Â
I have never flown on Nepal Airlines. It’d be great to have my first NA experience on the A320! Wish they would fly Kathmandu – Dubai – London. That would be so ideal! All the best Nepal Airlines, have a good year!
PS. Any idea how one can get an entry to see the ‘grand welcome’ of Nepal Airlines A320 at the Tribhuvan International Airport. I’d love to see and capture the spectacle!
Upcoming Nepali film ZHIGRANA is getting all the attention right now! Their clever marketing approach has already made ZHIGRANA popular on Facebook and it looks like there’s no stopping the team. Golden Yak Entertainment recently announced the ZHIGRANA cover song contest midst a press conference at the Capital Grill restaurant in Kathmandu. It’s simple! To win 1 Lakh rupees all you have to do is listen to Nachana from Zhigrana, cover the song, submit your entry and make sure that your video has the most votes online! Find out more here! The suspense thriller by Pasang Lama will be released across all cinemas on Friday March 6 2015.
ZHIGRANA Song Contest
ZHIGRANA is a small village where the lead characters happen to take shelter and the film unfolds! There’s a killer on the loose who sacrifices humans in the name of Kaal Panchami, a mythical ghost. Apparently the mysterious events that follow are expected give members of the audience quite a fright! Sounds interesting! I really hope the film manages to scare! The sex scene in the trailer looks interesting! I guess it comes attach with a thriller film 😉
Here’s a guest blog post by  Samikshya Siwakoti who is currently reading at Agnes Scott College, Atlanta Georgia. Siwakoti interned at MEDEP Nepal for just under three months during her summer break in 2014.
During my summer break, I got an opportunity to intern for a UNDP initiated project called MEDEP in Nepal. The main purpose of the internship was to conduct a study to assess the impact of MEDEP’s intervention on women and youth. As Nepal has been facing many problems such as lack of adequate employment opportunities and segregation based on gender and caste, many women and ethnic groups are backward and subjugated to domination. Thus, with the objective to assist deprived communities by creating various income generating opportunities through skills development training and to support small business enterprises, Micro-Enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP) was started in Nepal in 1998 with joint initiation of UNDP and the Government of Nepal. The current program, phase 4 (August 2013-July 2018) has been supporting national programs on micro-enterprise development.
This initiative has facilitated to create more than 8000 enterprises, 56,698 micro entrepreneurs, 58,096 employment as of December 2012. More than 30,000 entrepreneurs are also involved in various co-operatives at present. Among the micro-entrepreneurs empowered through the support of MEDEP, more than 60% are women. This is a remarkable achievement by MEDEP that supports these people from deprived communities through entrepreneurship training, technical skills training, micro-finance access, market linkages and considerable on-going advice and encouragement to new entrepreneurs who have significant upfront costs.
Dhanamaya Tamang, who is a widow, lives an independent life by earning through the production of strawberries and tomatoes and says that she feels so much more confident about speaking in front of the mass after being a beneficiary of MEDEP’s leadership training. She is not hesitant to raise her voice anymore. She says that after MEDEP’s intervention, many women have gained economic empowerment. They have been able to send their kids to private boarding schools instead of government schools. Besides providing better quality education to their children, these women are also able to actively participate in the community.
MEDEP has also enabled women to foster entrepreneurship culture among them. Also, being economically empowered has enabled them to come out from the four walls of their homes with deep rooted virtue and firm faith. They are now able to take decisions in the family as well as the community. Developing a sense of economic empowerment has contributed to bringing about desirable alteration of gender division of labour in the household. During some of the field visits during my internship, some women entrepreneurs informed that with the introduction of MEDEP, their male counterparts have started to lend helping hands in the household chores and have realized the importance of sharing work-burden in the family. Heath awareness and consciousness among women has also increased greatly and there has also been business expansion and product diversification as well as investment in other enterprises. Some have purchased buildings and land while some have replaced the traditional roof of their house with tin.
MEDEP’s intervention has also had a positive impact on the youths of Nepal. It has been observed that programmes like MEDEP help address the issue of brain drain prevalent in Nepal because if more youths get employed in the country then the trend of going abroad especially for labour work will diminish and the average number of daily foreign migration will go down. This is because youths can become independent by generating income through engagement in micro-enterprises promoted by projects like MEDEP such as bee-keeping, strawberry farming, tailoring etc. If programmes like MEDEP continue providing skill development training and technical support, it can also help curve the problem of under unemployment. While interacting with the locals of Ranipauwa rural market center of Kakani, they mentioned that a lot of youths have been returning from abroad to start their own micro-enterprise and many who have not gone abroad seemed motivated to work in Nepal itself. For instance; Mr. Septe Tamang has returned from Qatar after seven years and is now working in the production of tomatoes. Through tomato farming, he has been generating a good amount of income to support his family.
The efforts made by MEDEP are really commendable as the program has helped create many employment opportunities which has helped curve the scenario of poverty in Nepal. It has contributed greatly to the UN Millennium Development Goal of eradicating absolute poverty. From empowering women to youths, MEDEP intervention has helped improve many lives. It has been successful in bringing about socio-economic transformation of the participants and also addressed the problem of gender gap in the community. Women and youths have been the key beneficiaries of MEDEP’s efforts. The project phases out on 2018 so it is necessary to draw attention of the concerned authorities to either extend the project or replicate the efforts made by MEDEP to help more poverty stricken and disadvantaged groups in Nepal and give these people hope for better lives.

The online world is teeming with many Nepali news portal websites but if there was one website that started it all then it definitely was http://www.nepalnews.com! The first online news portal which surfaced in 2000 was the most popular way to know about the happenings in Nepal. Unfortunately NepalNews.com shared a very sad tweet today that read “Nepalnews announces with heavy heart that due to management’s rash, unfair decision, Nepal’s oldest news portal has been ‘closed down’.Â
The website not only shared news, it also developed to be a platform where users could access multimedia content, chat room, gallery and a forum!

Sano Sansar actress Namrata Shrestha seems to be dabbling back and forth music and movies! The actress who took the mike and belted out a few notes at the NepHop Evolution in Pokhara and Basantapur is back on it again. This time, Shrestha has covered the popular song BISTARAI by Rohit John Chettri for her upcoming film Soul Sister. She sounds pretty good! She sounds so angelic! What do you guys think?
The upcoming thriller has been filmed in Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kathmandu. Soul Sister has been directed by Prashant Rasaily. Joining the actress on-screen are Deepak Sharma, Rajesh Hamal, Raveena Desraj Shrestha, Shakuntala Vidya and more. Soul Sister is presented by Namrata’s very own Highly High Entertainment, the film will be in cinemas on Friday January 15 (Magh 1). It looks different. I can’t wait to see it.
The team behind Way Out of My League and Remember Me are back with a new short and it’s titled TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. The film features the lead from Way Out of My League Sora Lau and I must say, I really liked his acting in this one! Joining him on-screen is the very pretty Sambridi Gurung and Zac Rai. Zac also directed the short! Making small appearances in the film are Shusil Gurung, Deepika Limbu and So Deep Magar! How beautiful does Deepika look? WOW! No wonder he fell for her haha!
If you enjoy a light watch, slightly cheesy and somewhat predictable then this is worth watching. It’s very, youthful and serves the pre-teen/early teens I believe!
