Being LGBT in Nepal – The Story of Nilu

0

“Using the visual richness of Kathmandu as her backdrop film-maker Nilu Doma Sherpa explores the universality of love with the help of some of Nepal’s leading women”

I attended the Being LGBT in Asia : Nepal Country Report event at the UN House in Pulchowk yesterday. The event uncovered key findings of the LGBT community of Nepal and made recommendations to better the lives of the LGBT individuals living in the country. Apart from members of the media and LGBT representatives, the discussion also made space for CA Lawmakers, equality activists, members of Blue Diamond Society and the first Mr Handsome winner (pageant for gay men) Bisworaj Adhikari.

With the upcoming constitution in the writing process, there have been reports that Nepal is set to follow India’s footsteps and re-criminalise same-sex relations. If such a step is taken, the equality movement in Nepal will face a devastating setback. The report hopes to educate the decision-makers to work in a progressive manner which will include the LGBT community and promote fairness and equality. With the SAARC SUMMIT taking a hold over Kathmandu this week, equality activists and members of the LGBT community will have to wait a week or more to hear the government’s decision.

The event also showcased ‘The Story of Nilu – Stories of Being Me’. The video is simple and that’s the most important thing. Let love rule, simply.

SOLD Film To Premiere in Kathmandu

SOLD-FILM

SOLD – a novel by Patricia McCormick is receiving a Hollywood treatment! In the novel, McCormick tells the story of a girl from Nepal named Lakshmi who is sold into sexual slavery in India. The book which was published in 2006 has received rave reviews and hopefully the same will happen when the film premieres in Kumari Cinema on Tuesday. The film has been directed by Jeffrey D. Brown and stars many South Asian actors including Madan Krishna Shrestha. Actress Emma Thompson is one of the executive producers of SOLD. The director and several actors of SOLD will be joining the premiere on Tuesday.

It’s great that they are having a Nepal premiere for SOLD! I’ve actually bought the book… just haven’t had the chance to read it. Now I guess I’ll be watching the film straight-away.

So I attended my very first fashion show in Nepal yesterday, the Timeless Paragon Jewellery Fashion Show by Classic Diamond Jewellers! The invitees only event featured popular Bollywood actress and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen as the show-stopper and several other popular Indian models. The ramp also saw stunning Nepali models including Shristi Shrestha, Face of Classic Diamond Oshima Banu and Asmee Shrestha and many more recognizable faces including Aastha Pokharel, Anjali Lama and Paramita Rana. The show which began a little later than the scheduled 6.10PM start was hosted by Malvika Subba. The audience consisted of many Classic Diamond family, friends, stakeholders from the jewellery industry, buyers and a selected group of faces from the media! The whole event felt like a very nice family affair.

Three set’s of jewellery collection were displayed on the first day with the models wearing Oodhni Boutique. The fashion show should stick to simple clothes in order to emphasize the attention on the jewellery as I and many others were too busy focusing on the clothes, the colours and trying to figure out if the model was Nepali or Indian. Few of the Nepali models really had that grace and presence. Keep it up and keep learning.

The seating arrangements should be managed better in the future as the ‘first come first serve’ idea had the special ‘invitees only’ guests packed as if they were waiting in line for a winter sale. Of course everyone wants the best seat in the house. Pushing. Shoving. Aunties in sarees with their bling bling. It was quite amusing. Of course I am a little too experienced with queues, getting in front and all, so we managed to land up right on the front row! Cheers to the people around me. Lol.

Susmita Sen came on stage during the final collection to quite a loud round of applause. The actress mentioned that it was her second time in Nepal and how she plans to visit Pashupatinath the morning after, which is this morning. Sen will be walking the ramp again this evening for DAY 2 of the Timeless Paragon Jewellery Fashion Show. Before she leaves for Mumbai tomorrow, the Bollywood actress will inaugurate the new Classic Diamond Jewellers store in New Road’s Photo Concern building.

Football Legend Raúl in Kathmandu!

Included in the FIFA 100 list in 2004 as one of the “greatest living footballers” Spanish football legend Raúl González Blanco is currently in Nepal!  The former Spanish national football team captain is believed to be staying at the Dwarikas with his family. Raul was spotted by Raj Jung Thapa in Kathmandu on Friday! When Nepali fans found out of Rauls stay at Dwarika, fans waited by the hotel this morning to greet the football legend. He did not disappoint as he came out to greet his supporters. How lovely! The footballer and his family are on a personal visit to Nepal.  The footballer was also spotted by Manju Khadgi on Friday. Manju works at the ADIDAS store in Kumaripati.

I love the unity of the football supporters and the fact that they went by the hotel to show their love for the footballer! That’s awesome!

The JERRYY Experience!

JERRYY-Nepali-Film

I made my way to Civil Mall for the 9AM – first day first show – of JERRYY this morning. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that the morning show was nearly sold out. We had to sit on the second row, seat number 15-16. Since I’ve come to Nepal I’ve watched quite a lot of Nepali films but apart from Rekha Thapa’s HIMMATWALI, none of them have been as busy as JERRYY. A lot of young people. I guess it’s the magic of JERRYY and the host of young faces that the trailer teases you with…

JERRY is a charming watch… whilst the story doesn’t deliver anything new on your plate, it entertains, makes you laugh, has you feeling sad at some parts and most importantly, the film makes you want to be in the film! We all know a JERRYY in our lives… whether it be from our school days or our work-colleagues, there are many characters who you can relate with and the chemistry between JERRYY and Aakansha has been acted well by Anmol KC and Anna Sharma. My highlight was of course Amalia Sharma, a very charming face!

In the scene of Valentines Evening when JERRYY and Aakansha meet on the bridge, the boys (maybe girls too) in the cinema started wooing for Aakansha while the girls (maybe boys too) squealed for JERRYY. It was pretty entertaining. There are many lines and moments that will make the boys laugh and many scenes and dialogues which will make the girls swoon, JERRYY might just work for the audience in and outside of Kathmandu!

Get your plates ready! This bro-medy, drama-dy and love-story entertains!

The official Guinness World Record holder for being the world’s shortest man, Chandra Bahadur Dangi met the tallest man alive in London today! The event which brought together the shortest man at 21.5 inch and the tallest man at 8ft 1 inch also celebrated the Guinness World Record Day. Tsechu Dolma Wins Brower Youth Award 2014!

2

Tsechu-Dolma-Mustang

Stumbled across TSECHU DOLMA who recently received the Brower Youth Award for her work in creating a sustainable model for food security in Upper Mustang. The twenty-two year old who is currently pursuing a Masters in Public Administration at Columbia University in New York has also been covered by NBC News! Congratulations to Tsechu for the award and the start that she has made to better her community and it’s people. Here’s to hoping I get to share about more individuals such as Tsechu!

Keep up the work and the spirit!

During a visit to her homeland, Nepal, as an ethnographic research assistant, Tsechu Dolma learned that the villagers of Geling, in the Upper Mustang region, were worried about how erratic weather patterns brought on by climate change were impacting their food and water security. When Dolma returned to the US, she consulted with Nepalese expats and academics on how to help make Geling villagers, who are mostly subsistence farmers, climate resilient.

With funds from the Rubin Foundation and Columbia University, Dolma went back to Nepal to study the success and failures of past development projects. Based on her findings, Dolma proposed building a community greenhouse with locally sourced material. The villagers unanimously supported the idea. Dolma had also learned that Nepal’s decade-long civil war and environmental degradation had made village youth feel that they had no future. She proposed that the greenhouse be built in a school so that it would provide a platform for intergenerational sharing and collaboration. Dolma hopes the Geling greenhouse will serve as a model of climate resiliency and local ownership in rural communities worldwide.”
